soulful time warp


Pros: low prices, low crowds, low glitz, high degree of fun

Cons: in the shadow of nearby Wildcat, retro lifts and lodge

Black Mountain is one of the oldest ski areas in NH, founded 1935. The place oozes with soul and though it may be long in the tooth, it’s still got some bite. It’s extremely affordable. A family of four can ski weekends for less than $30 each per day and on the non-holiday Wednesday of my visit an afternoon lift ticket was just $15. There are some interesting and wonderfully sheltered green circle runs on the south facing lower mountain, but don't underestimate Black’s terrain. Steep little glade shots can be found all over the 1100 vertical feet of Black Mtn.  And the marked trails (~45) are diverse and quirky, including short, but very steep drops, tight corkscrew type runs, open...

retro vibe, fun for families


Pros: small, nice gentle trails

Cons: nothing really challenging for an expert

A super value for families. Tickets are inexpensive, and you are right in Jackson, near 4 other ski areas. Lifts are double seat chair, etc. They have horses in a corral near the cozy base lodge.
