Pros: Some good ideas

Cons: The KoolAid(tm) leaves a bad taste

Love him or hate him, this is a best selling ski book. This was the beginning of the Primary Movements Teaching system movement. If you truly want to become an expert skier the Harb way, this book is just the beginning. If you alreay are an expert skier, the new way to ski looks awfully familiar. The book and DVD are well produced. The recommended approach for improvement is sound. The premise of superiority is debateable.

Pros: Interesting approach,

Cons: not sure it helps rank beginners that much

Two signature moves typify all of Harb's lessons (a) relax the downhill leg to initiate turn transition (b) tip the light inside or new uphill leg to initiate edging on BOTH feet (its called the phantom edge).

There is much to be said about his approach. Its actually quite useful, especially for intermediates and experts since they will be able to see what he is getting at. There is an efficiency to what he talks about but if there is any weakness, it does not emphasize the fact that both legs are often used in skiing, even in serious arc-to-arc edge locked carves.

Pros: It works

Cons: You won't believe it

Show me a document or something to prove that CSIA/PSIA actually teach tipping. If you can, I'll eat my boots.

It's total BS to suggest that this is a rehash of known material.  It's not.

It's the first clear statement of proper ski movements.  The literature culminates in "The Essentials of Skiing" -- the master work.

Pros: teaches efficient, high-performance, knee-friendly skiing movement patterns.

Cons: not compatible with instruction at most ski area ski schools (if it's better, is that a con or pro?)

A masterpiece of ski instruction.  Do the drills precisely for a while each time you're on the hill and your skiing performance will skyrocket.  The program is designed to program highly efficient skiing movement patterns into your muscle memory.  The accompanying DVD illustrates these movements and helps visual learners unlock the full content of the book.

There's no substitute for hard work, but if you're going to work hard on your skiing, choose the technique with the highest payoff.  Practice makes permanent, so take care to practice high-end skiing movements such as those taught in this book, its follow-on volume 2, Essentials of Skiing, and the Essentials DVD library, all by the same author.

The author was once a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America National Alpine Team (aka the national demo team), but he left PSIA after a protracted dispute about how ski instruction should evolve at a time when shaped skis were becoming common.  The book was written to express his views about what modern ski instruction should be.  As a result, it contains a few pointed historical comments about mainstream instruction that seem dated to 21st century ears.  If they bother you, just ignore them and focus on all of the great skiing wisdom in this book.
