Gadzooks! It's Another EpicSki Contest!

All you have to do to win is write the best review of Snowbird, as judged by Bob Peters, Cirquerider, and nolo, and share your email address with Snowbird. To see an example of a review worthy of winning, go to the Jackson Hole page and scroll down to the wiki by Bob Peters. The contest will run through February, with the winner to be announced March 1.

The winner's entry will become the Review Wiki for the Snowbird page. Two runners up will receive copies of Ultimate Skiing by Ron LeMaster. All entries will be featured on the Snowbird page. See Contest Rules for details.

Here's how to enter:

You can compose your post in your word processor and copy and paste it into the reply form. Let us know if you have any difficulties and we will do our best to help you get your masterpiece into the post reply form.

Prizes

The grand prize is three nights at the Cliff Lodge and three days lift tickets at Snowbird, to be used during the 2010-2011 season. Second and third place prizes are a copy of Ultimate Skiing by Ron LeMaster. These prizes are awarded "as is" with no warranty or guarantee, either express or implied outside of manufacturer's limited warranty. No transfer, assignment or substitution of a prize permitted, except Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize for an item of equal or greater value in the event an advertised prize is unavailable. Odds of winning depend upon the number of entries received. Limit of one prize per household.

People have won nobel prizes for writing about stuff that actually never happened. I see no reason why you can't do that here with a little research. Does it say you actually have to have been there?

"It was raining, and the snow was wonderfully soft.." Oh wait, that's Vermont.

"Though I kept probing with my pole, I couldn't find the bottom of the powder! I was so glad my instructor, "Bushwacker", had recommended these 130mm skis. It made all the difference. I even dropped a small cliff, and we ate saltines and sardines for lunch! He had me skiing like a local in no time. Can't wait to go back."
"On the second day Mr. Bushwacker brought some special skis for me to try. I thought that they'd been run over by a truck because they were bent, but he assured me they were they latest new technology for skiing the trees. Had an even better day!! Gained so much more confidence I started making fun of that neighboring resort, Alta. Even came up with a slogan for the marketing deptartment!
Here it is: 'Hey Altoids! When you're ready to spend more time going down the mountain than across it, step up to Snowbird!!'  Thanks Mr. Bushwacker! what a day!"

I was making no such assumption.

So you'll have a contest for a review of Whistler so I can go there again?  I go there all the time.  I don't go lots of places because I don't have the money to travel to far away resorts.  This contest simply rewards a local or a person with the resources to get there in the first place.  How about a Whistler review with a prize of three days and nights at Alta/Snowbird or Jackson Hole?  That I could get into.

I slide.

I agree 100% with Posaune on the "have a Whistler review contest" :)

However, there is nothing in the contest rules saying that you have to have been to Snowbird to review it They are simply asking for an awesome review of an awesome mountain.

Edit: Scratch that, read through the "ideal" review from Bob Peters. Detailed knowledge of the mountain is definitely a necessity :).

Gosh, guys.

The point of the contest is to try to receive the best possible review of a premier ski resort.  The best review would probably come from someone who has actually been there, even if only for a visit.  There is a great deal of value to EpicSki to have a catalog of good resort reviews, so the prize is being offered to the person in the best position to do a good review.  My guess is that Snowbird is the first in a series of contests and that you may get your chance down the road.

I've never been to Whistler and I would love to go. Given that, when and if nolo does a contest for a review of Whistler, should I come on here with a buzz-killing post and ask "Why don't you do a contest for a review of Jackson Hole?".

If ANYBODY should complain about the choice of this contest, it's me.  I'm the one who did the review that's being held up as an example, and I didn't get anything for it.  Not only THAT, but the other resort in the whole world that I would probably be most qualified to do a review on would be, wait for it, Snowbird.  But I can't do that one because I'm a frickin' judge.

Woe is me.

I will say that you both bring up a good point about having the prize be a visit to an area other than the one you review.  That does make a lot of sense given that there's a fair chance that a winning reviewer will be a local at at the resort and may not NEED a vacation at their own resort.  Although I would say that if I could get a free three-night stay at an upscale hotel in Jackson Hole I'd take it in a heartbeat.  Anyway, it may be (I don't know) that nolo was able to get a free or discounted lift/lodging deal from Snowbird because they're the subject of the review.  Maybe as more contests come into play, maybe she can offer a choice.

Bottom line, though, is that the contest is an incentive to get reviews for Snowbird.  I think that's a good thing.

I retract this.  Though it's still true it's awful whiney.  I was kind of grumpy this morning but I went skiing at Baker in 8" of new, so I'm all better now.  Sorry.

I slide.

I don't retract mine, I just wish there was a contest the average guy could win, someone who dreams of going, yet always just a dream.

I'm not a ski manufacturer, can't enter that one.

I've never been to Snowbird, Jackson or Whistler but the people who frequent can win tickets to a place they already go to...?

Guess you gotta be in that click of  wealthy EpicSkiers.

...and yes, I am being a whiner.

Oh, good point Joan!

Wow, I just noticed that I'll be skiing Snowbird before the end of this contest!

I really cannot believe people are complaining. Epic is a great place to hang out (even if I haven't been around a whole lot lately) and opportunities to win prizes like skis, vacations, books etc are just icing on the cake.  The sense of entitlement here is astounding.

Nolo and crew, thank you so much for putting in the hard work to gather opportunities like this.  Unfortunately I haven't skied Snowbird since I was a very young child so I won't be able to enter this one.  However, I wait with baited breath to see what the next opportunity is!

I am trying to put together one right now. :)

What if I have only ever skied at Snowbird for 2 days have only so much knowledge about the place? Just share what I have to share? I am by no means an expert on Snowbird. But I can try and give all the advice a tourist could give.

Posuane's thoughts also crossed my mind with this.

OK so if/when we have more prizes available.. Let's say that instead it was a "Write a review of Snowbird to win a trip to Jackson Hole" contest or vice versa.  Either way, folks that haven't already "been dere dun dat" are at a disadvantage.

Maybe the requirement for entry should be to have the entrants write a review for Snowbird AND someplace else they have actually been under condition that the best review of all the resorts wins, but the Snowbird review is the property of the sponsors and might be used even if the person that wrote it didn't win best overall review for all resorts.

That way Snowbird is likely to get some really good reviews to choose from and everyone that has skied anywhere can enter with a fair chance of winning the good prize

Of course the downside to that is it exponentially increases the number of spammed and complete BS entries you kind and patient moderators and administrators and owner folks have to critique

There's never going to be anything totally fair to all except random drawings, and then one post wonders can win.

Just my .02.  It isn't really that unfair to have people write about Snowbird to win a trip to Snowbird, especially being that this is a ski forum..

I'd rather be skiing

You can write the review from your experience as a guest and any pictures that you might have taken, along with any additional research you care to do to fill in the facts.  You must have permission to use any materials submitted, particularly photos or video.  Maps and images already in use on the Snowbird web site should be fair-game for the review.  Someone is welcome to correct me if that is not the case.  We want entries to be original.  The Jackson Hole review was pointed out as an example since it is one of the better reviews we have so far.

Snowbird is an "insider" or sponsor of EpicSki, and this contest is intended to promote Snowbird and collect our member's stories and input.  It is certainly a disadvantage not to have visited previously, but it is possible to review a resort without actually having been there.  Keep in mind, that photos form the gathering, or any past trip report or review, posted on EpicSki may be used in a review with permission of the owners (send a PM and be sure to credit the source).  We hope to have many other contests and prizes.  Eventually we will hopefully hit the one that is near and dear to you.  If you come to the Gathering next week, you should have plenty of material.

No need for anyone else to enter, this has got to be the winner

Seriously, even though I have never been to Snowbird and therefore wouldn't enter, I think this is a great idea.  Some people will bitch about anything.
