I replaced my 130 cm cut down Northlands with a brand new pair of hart Gremlins, white with red letters, 160 cm was too big for me at the time but I loved them nevertheless.  Salomon 202 bindings

My first brand spankly new skis were hart hornets with Dovre step in bindings. They were the bomb. I unfortunately broke a tip grandstanding with a tip stand at the start of the snow plow turn section of a ski proficiency competition. The tip stayed on and I placed second in the competition. The shop got me know new ones and life was grand again.

First new skis A&T with cable bindings (Anderson and Thompson) 1963.  We were in Madison, WI going on a vacation to Telemark up north.  Segmented edges and a painted on base, those skis were crap.  They had a very short life. 

Replace with a pair of, gently used, Kastle downhills 210cm with Marker turntables, they were like a pair of railroad ties but learned to turn and ski ice on them.  Everything else got a lot easier after these.

A White Raven

I was 11 years old. Never had been skiing before.

They were 140 cm Elans. I don't remember the model.

 207 Rossi 3G Kevlar. I think I was 15 at the time.

8th grade I bought a pair of Kastle SX Actions in a 195

k2 apache which I bought last year after skiing for years on used 1970's model (or earlier) wood compsite rosingnol.

My first ever pair of newbies were Fischer Kevlars in a 170 length, which is kind humerous by todays standards seeing as how I'm about 5 inches taller these days, and on 177's (just jumped from 167).  But that's the way it was back in the late 80's.  Long, long, longer.  They were mounted with those old school Tyrolia's that had the dual action release in the back where you had to pull up on the tail instead of pushing down to release them.  Took me forever to figure out you could stick your pole tip in the little hole, lean the pole backwards, and it woul lift the lever.  Spent that first season leaning back and reaching down by hand.  Not fun!.  And of course, a pair of rear entry Salamons with the push button stiffness adjusters.  Can't remember the model, but who didn't want to look like Glen?

 First "unmounted" skis were Atomic Racer 2000 160's, I bought these from a neighbor...first "real" pair of skis that I bought in a store...Pre 1200SP 204's.

Fischer Red Masters - 175 cm, I think in 1974.  They had bright red topskins and neon green bases.  I think I broke them after about 1.5 seasons and went through the rest of my family's skis in the other 0.5 season.

1963 Kaestle GS, they were red, 200cm. Marker Toe with Marker Short Thong heel plate, Heirling boots. the graphics were long three color stripe that  with an emblem of circles and shields or something across the stripes. the bases were yellow, with a red strip along the edges (that always peeled off from the tail. metal and wood sandwich, dampening layer, shiny red top sheet (other models blue and black, combi and downhill) ,

this ski was of the same generation as the kneissel white, red, blue stars

at the time the skis to have were: Kneissel White and Red Star, Kaestle GS, Volkl Tiger (?), Rossignol Strato, Fisher Alu

Glungezer Standard in 195cm (now I bet even Phil has never heard of these!) in 1970.  Fitted with attenhofer toe and tyrolia 55(IIRC) step in heel.  Step-in was a great luxury for me after skiing with cable bindings prior.  Worked all summer at a gardening job which required me cycling 8.5 miles each way to pay for them. Henke clip boots (another advance after the old double lace ones). 

Then, of course, managed to break one of them about the 6th day out on them .  Snapped clean off about a foot back from the tip.  Couldn't believe it.  Got a single ski replacement and skied tehm again the next season

 Nope, never heard of them. 

Back then, and now most likely, if you land a ski on firm snow with the tail first, such that the tip slaps down and vibrates, that will often snap the ski behind the tip.

Olin Mark IV, 180 cm, 1979. I was in 6th grade, probably about 5'5". Salomon bindings, don't remember anything else.

130 cm red,white, and blue Japanese made Krystal Alpine's with Salomon 101 bindings. bought (I think) in '71 (?) the year of the winter Olympics in Sapporo (?) Japan from Walts Barber Shop (and sporting goods). I had spent my first couple of years on that high tech stuff to the left...

Fisher Bumpbusters.....1975

Red Cortina wood skis. Bought them at a Department store called Valu-mart. they had screwed-in segmented edges and some kind of plastic base. Mounted with A & T Cable bindings (You Notched the boot toe to interface with the toe piece) and maybe a Koflach or Rieker Double lace up boot.

Then bought a pair of Brand new metal Gresvig Mustangs. Maybe Salomon 505 step-in Bindings Broke the tip on those. either moved up to Koflach Gold Star, Double boot (Inner lace outer Buckle

Then bought a pair of brand new 210 Hart Javelin Giant Slaloms with I beleive Salomon 525's. I believe I may of benn in Humanic Dynafit 6 Buckleby then.

Head 320, 205 cm, with a low-end Salomon step in binding; spring 1970.

K2 Elte, 1970ish.  Before that it was hand me down woodies with cable bindings.

Fischer Silverglass 190 cm from Herman Atlas Tyson's Corner store. On sale for $20 USD Tyrolia Clix and some Nordica 5 buckle plastic boots. Whole mess for around $100 USD, lot of money as I was making $320 mo in the US Army(drafted). Skied at Round Top and Rapahanok and others around DC. got me started and ruined my life.

Hagan 160-somethings... had them for about a year and a half when I was 12. Never saw another pair of Hagans on the mountain while I was on them. Seen some since, but very few and far between.

I remember plenty of Hagans on the hill in the 70s.  My sister had a pair of Hagan Graduates.  The P-tex delammed down one tip the second time she used them, but they weren't new when we got them.
