Bike Rack

I've added a Thule roof bar system (thanks Philpug), and, need to get a single bike rack for my road bike. Philly has a pretty good Craigslist system and there are many Thule products available. I'd appreciate any thoughts on what to look for or avoid.

I use the Thule upright bike carrier.  I don't have to take off the front wheel which is a plus for me.  Once I lift the bike above my head and place the wheels into the trough/track I can use one hand to secure the bike.  Very easy, very quick, very smart.  My carrier is still in use after ten years.  When I need to upgrade racks I will be sure to purchase another upright bike rack.  

I think the model of my rack is the "big mouth."

I use one of Thule's VeloVise fork-mounted trays on my rooftop Thule bars.  It's sturdy and works like a charm, no muss or fuss.  The bikes are always secure, even over rough roads and in terrible weather.  I use a wheel carrying "pitchfork" for the front wheel.  With my current setup on my Subaru Legacy sedan, I can carry three bikes and two front wheels on the roof - not bad at all.

The only catch is that some models of the VeloVise dont' work properly with disk brake tabs - not a dealbreaker for me, but could be for some.

Rocky Mounts makes a nice fork-mount tray, as well: well made, available in many colors.

Note that I would love to be able to use one of the upright carriers mentioned above, if not for the fact that most carbon-frame road bikes won't secure properly within them without risking damage to the frame.

Thanks guys.

I'm doing a deal with fellow Bear MikeC who's selling a Yakima BOA bike rack. Did some checking and it will work with Thule racks. It will be low use as I've got a VW wagon and mostly just carry the bike inside.

Just remember to get the bike off the rack, before you put the car in the garage!

Get the kind that grips the front wheel. I got tired of dealing with all the bolts on DH bike thru-axles and get a wheel gripper mount. It works great on all bikes, and I haven't looked back.

 My favorite was the 529 upright. Simple and it worked.

Just put two Rola fork mounts on mine. No problems with disc break suspension forks, Setup works for gf's Giant, my Scott MTBs or my Treck roadie.  Can even fit surfboard between bikes if heading away for weekend.
