Hotel in Squaw??? For a "Special trip"

Dear All; my wife & I are celebrating our 10th anniversary this January and I'll be at Tahao at a friends condo in late January so we thought about a "special" vacation after this trip to Squaw.  Now I've skied Squaw but never stayed there.  Any suggestions for a special hotel to celebrate our 10th.  My wife found the "Resort at Squaw Creek" on the Internet but rather then trust marketing propaganda I'll put it out to my friends on Epic ski.  By the way, we're both level 9 skiers so the quality of the skiing is important.  Nothing like having a wife who really knows how to ski..... You already said you want to ski Squaw so the skiing quality is already determined. I believe those are condos. It best call to find out.

My wife says it's a hotel not condos but you're right, I do need to call.  Any hotel suggestions?

Bob4Snow,  my wife (a conference coordinator) was at Squaw, signing contracts in July.  Here's her take on your question.

Resort at Squaw Creek - Hotel.  Just a hotel unless you upgrade the room and it will be $250 a night and still a hotel.  Great location on Red Dog side of Squaw.  Meals in hotel $120-150 i.e., for dinner.

Wife recommends the following:  The Village at Squaw Creek, 1 bedroom condo. @150 a night, fireplace, fully furnished kitchen, balcony patio, living room, undergroound parking hot tub.   www.the village at squaw creek.com     530-584-6229

You are a level 9 skier, you will enjoy Squaw and it's skiing.  If you decide to go PM me and I will  give you info. on a great restaurant even down to what table to reserve.   Meals that are great in a restored Poney Express relay station.

I know I live in No. Idaho but skied tahoe for over 30 yrs.

Bob, I am an East coaster with only one trip to Tahoe so I am no expert but I can tell you this, we stayed and skied at Squaw, more specifically stayed at The Village at Squaw Valley and it was amazing.  I think the price is moderate to expensive but everything was perfect.  You can't beat the convenience of being able to walk to the mountain, nice selection of restaurants and shopping right there.  You can also get a room with a kitchenette if you should require.  Very nice quality.

If I were to go back the only reason I might not stay there is just to experience something new (I want to ski Heavenly or some of the other mountains out there) but we liked it so much it would be tempting to just go there again.  Both the skiing and amenities at Squaw were among the best I have experienced.

Hey Pete, I guess we were both typing our post at the same time....I concur on Village at Squaw.

Both the Village and Resort are condo-ownership but run more as hotels.  Both are fine choices.  Personally, for a special occasion, I'd go for a high floor at the Resort.

Don't be surprised if the weekend rate is 20% higher.

The Resort is truly ski in ski out and was a 4 diamond hotel until it was converted to "condos" a few years back.  It has a full amenity package including spa and ice rink, gym, room service etc. and it feels more like a hotel. It is high quality and worthy of a special occasion.  As a level 9 skier you probably won't be skiing the run that "skis in and out" of it as it is intermediate but it does have a very nice view of the lake from the unload station.  The Village is quite nice as well but doesn't have the amenity package of the Resort; it feels more condo like.  It is just a very short walk to the signature lift (KT) and the Funitel if you want to go up top that way.  It is also a very short walk to the best restaurant in the Valley; that being Plumpjacks.  I've been a fifty plus day a season guy at Squaw for over 30 years so if you would like to PM me I would be happy to help you out in any way I can.  We are being told that with this being the 50th anniversary of the Olympics many festivities are planned for the season and these will likely stage at the Village.  I hope you have a great time.

The rooms in the Village at Squaw can be fine, but some of them can get loud if there's something going on in the Village, or if they're above the Auld Dubliner.

The Resort at Squaw Creek is a nice condo hotel with a pool and it's own ice rink.  It's a shuttle ride away from the Village, but has it's own lift. If you're there at the end of January, then the snow cover down to Squaw Creek should be fine.

If you've already been skiing Tahoe for a week, stay at the Resort at Squaw Creek and shuttle over to the Village if you feel like doing some shopping/drinking.

If you and your wife like wine, check out the restaurant at Plumpjack, which is the hotel across the street from the Cable Car/Village.  We sometimes stay in the hotel, and that may be a backup option to consider.  www.plumpjack.com

Good point Dad.  I sould have clarified my comment to mean relative to what else Squaw has to offer.  I've spent many a storm day lapping under the chair at Squaw Creek.

What everyone else above me said.......and don't forget VRBO.com for some great lodging deals.  Looks like there are plenty of lodging available for both the Village and Squaw Creek.
