I can't believe it took 25 posts to get to Le Massif.  Nothing quite compares to it in the East.

I might ski a day at #89 this year when I travel over to the new mega center of the Marcellus Shale gas industry, Williamsport, Pa. Skied Sawmill back in the mid to late 70"s while attending Penn State. It was named Oregon Hll back then. Two fairly steep runs on the fron Right?

Cool you'll be close to me I'm a few miles south of Williamsport; It depends on steep, there are two "steep" (for PA) runs, but they sacrafice steep for short. For example the steep run leads into a terrain park that the only way to get over the jump to the landing is to go full tuck down the entire mountain. If thats you're last resort than go there but You're better off going to Sno mountain than to Sawmill.

What is it about Tremblant that you hate?
The fact that the lifts are always breaking down?
The fact that the run convergence on the south side is one of the most dangerous ski spots on earth?
The fact that the place has been so badly mismanaged that there is little or no money to improve the ski terrain?
The fact that it is -50 at the top a good portion of the winter?
The fact that they have turned a cool ski resort into a plastic disney land?
The fact that they expect skiers to pay to park? (Only place in eastern Canada I know that does this; yes, i know I can park on the North side and always do.)
Overpriced lodging? (This should improve as all the condo developers go bankrupt)
The $80 lift ticket? The only hill around here worth $80 is Le Massif and I ski there for $50.
The fact that the only new lift is a gondola that goes from the base area to a Casino, but not to the top of a ski run?

Hey, I am 60 minutes from Tremblant and ski there a few times each winter when conditions are right (New snow, midweek, not -30). I hate the vibe of the place now; I grew up within 30 mins of Tremblant and skied it a lot in the 80s and it was a totally different experience. How can you invest all that cash and end up with such a disaster?

Killington ~ but only in the middle of the week
Sugerloaf ~ anytime
Sunday River ~ lots of mountain but not real steep
Cannon or Wildcat ~ best mountains for the money
Sugerbush ~ always a winner
Stowe ~ sentimental favorite, best runs aren't on the trail map
Jay Peak or Burke ~ most underrated
Whiteface ~ great steeps, great village
Gore ~ another underrated mountain
Stratton ~ hope you have some money to spend

Ski Valley
Klein Innsbruck
Sweat Hill

Just kidding. You have to go to NELSAP for info on them
Seems like a few places get a lot of picks

Jay
Bush/MRG
Cannon- (Not sure how much longer, the whole Mittersill thing could go one way or the other)
Burke
By the way has anyone been to Saddleback in the last year?. I haven't been there in about 15 but I've been doing research for my website and the place is looking insane. I wonder if it would move up the rankings if I go this year.

I love these threads, but it makes it really tough to choose...

In no particular order,

Stowe - the front four could keep me busy for weeks, and the trees are just amazing.  When the quad runs smoothly, it's easily one of the best.
Jay - the frontside trees are absolutely unlike anything else on the east coast.  The tram is a bitch, but it's worth it.
Magic - Powder day heaven, you can lap on untouched freshies all day, seemingly by yourself.  Also it's about 3 hours closer than Stowe, Jay or MRG for me.
MRG - everything is about as good as it gets, just a sick mountain.  Crowded and the pow wolves are always out in force, but sick.
Jiminy - best night skiing around for after work midweek.  Not huge or ubergnar, but def the best night skiing and only an hour from my house.  Key for sneaking in weekday laps after work.

No way could I choose just one...

I'm surprised how many of us night ski at Jiminy (although it does not belong on this list by any stretch of the imagination).  I'm usually there on Tuesday evenings (NY night) with many of my coworkers.  Our office is 30-45 min. from Jiminy in E. Greenbush, NY.

My top choices (same as many):

Sugarbush
MRG (midweek)

Sugarbush
Sunday River
Bradford, Haverhill, MA (for the Zen skier, size, vertical or length is irrelevant and it's only 10 minutes from where I live)

That seems like an odd list. Traditional/cosy, traditional/cosy, urban sprawl, kind of thing.

BTW, apropos of absolutely nothing, my list of East Coast hills I've never skied and would like to (but probably never will, at this point):

  • Smuggs
  • Jay
  • Saddleback
  • Sugarloaf

Control. Freedom is control.

Here's my top 5

1) The Blue Hill
2) Mt Southington
3) Nashoba Valley
4) Yawgoo Valley
5) Ski Bradford

Those VT, NH and ME areas are way overrated except for Mt Cranmore...I really like it there so that's prob # 6 on my list

Grew up skiing at Blue Knob, PA so that goes at top:  http://www.snowjournal.com/images/gallery_snowjournal/4808d764dfb46.jpg

But Killington, VT was first big eastern area I really got to explore:  http://www.snowjournal.com/images/gallery_snowjournal/4afaefd5612ce.jpg

Then I experienced the long beautiful trails of Wildcat, NH:  http://www.snowjournal.com/images/gallery_snowjournal/4af061ecb57a9.jpg

Then even longer and more beautiful trails of Le Massif, Quebec:  http://www.snowjournal.com/images/gallery_snowjournal/4afa8395be15b.jpg

Whiteface (Iceface) - A big, tough mountain where I made my first turns.  Lake Placid is All That, too.

Stowe - I lived there for two winters.  A great mountain, one of the best ski towns I ever lived in.

Jay - Only skied there once, but it seemed like a real larger than life mountain...had a real Western feel to it.

Not in order as it all depends on the day of the week, snow conditions, cash reserve and who's tagging along.

MRG
Plattekill
Stowe
Magic

Hoping to add Jay to the list this season......

If you are going to go down this road, then you can't leave out the greatest mountain in PA, Tussey. 4 (I mean 7 as advertised) runs down some of central PA's finest frontside skiing, served by the fasted double, quad chair lift in the world.  I swear if we get a big storm this season, I'm skiing backside Tussey.

my home resort is holiday valley which is small verically but nice terrain and lifts are great.

Lake Placid is nice....it is hard to justify a 8 hour drive to a 8 hour flight out west.

Sugarbush is also very nice...except the bar at the base could be a lot larger :)
