Skiing after being pregnant - holliday with a baby

Hello,

The next thread for www.epicski.com/forum/thread/34415/skiing-while-pregnant

I am considering a ski vocation in spring... But my wife will have baby in January / February. So the baby would be 1-3 month when time for trip comes.

What did you do when your baby was less than a year old... Stopped skiing? Left your wife at home and went alone? Took the baby with you?
Currently thinking of taking a baby with us since all he/she will do is eat and sleep. And weather in valley should be much better than here at home...

Appreciate any information about trips with babies

irafar, If this is your 1st child I would bag the trip for this year. Newborn baby, 1st time parents? is very overwelming. If you are away from home and something comes up it won't be good. If you are both away from home with child and you are not in a familiar place with regards to medical help, family help, friends etc. you could have a disaster. Alot can come up in the 1st few months with babies and new parents(if thats the case here) can get overwhelmed very fast.

Tell your wife you're going out to get Chinese. Hide stuff in garage. Have flights booked. Tell her you went wrong way to restaurant and ended up at airport.

She'll be so preoccupied with the kid you'll be able to get 4-5 days in before it gets too severe. Bring her back something nice (that you can use too).

Yes, 1st time parents, but not quite... My wife has 3 younger brothers. Two of them are 5 and 2 years old... So she has some experience .

Here is one small example of a problem that could pop up that you pretty much have no control over. If you went with family and are staying at hotel, lodge, condo etc. what if there are other guests who are there and like to party until all hours or are just noisy people thru out the day and evening. You can't get any rest, your baby is up all the time, your wife is frustrated. Do you go and tell the other guests that you have a 1month old and would appreciate if they would calm it down, knowing that this is there vacation also? That would be a tough one for me to do. There are sometimes you need to be in as much control of the situation as possible and that you achieve by staying at your place where you make the rules. I would wait a year , it would be a lot easier taking a 1 year old ,assuming you can find good child care, and having a good trip for you and your wife. I have taken week long ski trips with my wife and my then 2.5 year old daughter and 14 month old son. It worked out, but if you asked my wife it wasn't any vacation.Oh I'm still paying 12 years later.

For the most part I would take Snowbowler's advice.  He is clearly either a wise man or has at least learned from his mistakes.  Does your wife plan to ski or just hang out with the baby?  If she just wants to get away and doesn't plan on skiing you may get away with the trip.

We took our oldest to Switzerland when he was just 4 months old, not for skiing but just to see.  I still have more fond memories of the trip than my wife.  Despite the fact that they do a lot of sleeping and eating at that age, what they do a lot of that makes the trip unpleasant is CRYING!

How did you go to Switzerland? Plane, car? Was you baby quiet at home or noisy?

If we do the trip, we will go by car... So far all children (and not only children) have slept well in my car. That keeps me thinking that trip is much more exhausting for parents than baby. As soon as we are there, there is not much difference.

My youngest was born January 15th.  My wife skied Christmas and March of that year. But my parents lived in Aspen, so we had babysitters, which is huge. 

Life is not over, just because you have an infant.
We've traveled all over with two.  Proper planning and having a lot of supplies makes traveling bearable. 

Getting good daycare is one of the bigger challenges.  Since you may drive, you might consider bringing a nanny with you?

Just beware of the hot nanny syndrome!  That can get real expensive!

I have a sister and my mother deserves some time out of job . I think I'll avoid the hot nanny syndrome ...
