Airline charges for golf cases

Has anyone flown with their clubs lately, and if so, what charges were imposed for your golf bag.
I normally fly southwest, however, I am traveling home on Delta and returning on United.
There rules seem somewhat vague as to the cost of oversized baggage.

Thanks

Just returned home from a golf trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. Flew out on Delta, home on US Scare. Just a regular 25$ check bag few for golf clubs in a case or bag. Same rules as regular bags. But a few of my Buddies decided to pack some cloths in with their clubs and got overweight charges of $50. The key is to keep it 50 lbs. or under. So, remember that. Usually the person checking you in has descression. A few lbs. will usually let you slide. More than 5 lbs. will make you reduce somehow.

So, a tip would be not to cram extra junk in there, don't pack a couple dozen balls, buy them when you get there. Don't use a hard case as they are really heavy to begin with.

Where did you play down there Lars and what courses did you like the most. Its all pretty good IMHO. I go down twice a year June and Sept. Brother in law has a place at BareFoot he lets us use. The thing I really enjoy about Myrtle Beach golf is level lies compared to up here in SW Pa.where it seems the ball is either above your feet or below your feet and all the greens are elevated above the fairway so you rarely have your ball roll on to the green.  I shot my best scores of the year down there (nothing great) and think that level lies and some roll might have been the reason now.

I just pulled this off an airline site.
I don't think they make a golf bag less than 62 linear inches.

And $175   That's B.S.!!!

My standard size golf bag is 50 inches long. Most airlines treat golf and ski gear as 1 piece of normal sized checked baggage. This page describes golf and ski baggage policies for United.

Golf equipment

Allowance/requirements
1 standard-sized golf bag with clubs and 1 pair of shoes

Allowed in place of one checked bag.

Maximum weight
50 pounds (23 kilograms)

Must be enclosed in full-length protective cover (vinyl/cloth/nylon/or hard-sided case).

So the price for flying United with golf clubs would vary from $30-$60 depending on whether you prepaid the fees and if the clubs were the first or second bag.

Checked baggage fees via EasyCheck-in® online at united.com
If you purchased tickets... then the following fees will apply for checked bags:
First bag Second bag
before
May 14, 2009
$11 $21
on or after
May 14, 2009
$15 $25

Checked baggage fees paid at the airport

If you purchased tickets... then the following fees will apply for checked bags:
First bag Second bag
before
May 14, 2009
$15 $25
on or after
May 14, 2009
$20 $30

Or you could fly Southwest, where bags fly free (except for Chaos's girl friend).

Regards,
Rusty

Played Willbrook Plantation the first day. Myrtle Beach National 36 holes that day on the South and West courses. Wachesaw Plantation East, and then went back to National and played the famed North Course. The courses weren't long but due to the rain the week before, you didn't get any roll at all plus the wind always seemed in your face. A 378 yard par four played like a 430 yard par four. Kept it in the 80's at these courses with the exception of the North Course where I shot a 94. Sand, water and a hangover made for a very long day. I managed to par the last five holes at least so my game came back. Hung out in Murrel's Inlet most o the time. Good food and apre there. Maybe you should join us next year. We'll probably go back to Ft. Meyers next year.
