new bindings for vintage olin mark iv?

So I'm in the process of buying a pair of 170 cm original Olin Mark IVs. Needless to say, I'm very excited. They are currently mounted with the original Salomon 444 bindings, but to be honest I'd like to take this whole vintage thing one step at a time, so I'm looking into a new set. I'm a racer, so these would be more for fun/the novelty of skiing the original twin tip.

I plan on skiing them with medium intensity in the park and in the bumps, but I need bindings that can handle hard skiing (I generally set DINs no lower than 9). Obviously these skis haven't incorporated the latest in modern alpine design; is it worth it to pair them with jesters, or should I look into something else?

I'm planning on mounting them midsole, for switch riding. Are there any special considerations I need to remember when I take them to get drilled?

Does anyone out there still ski/remember the Mark IVs? Is there anything I need to know beforehand about how to ski them?

There are certainly period correct bindings that would still work very well for you if you can find some in good shape....but that's your choice. Also I would use the factory mark for your mount.
Here's my IV's and COMP IV's with period bindings (Look n17's and Salomon 747 Equipe) Both are 180cm's. I enjoy the COMP's a bit more than the original IV's.

Wouldn't mounting them center or even forward offer advantage in moguls? Didn't skiers do that when the skis were new?

What is the difference between the standard and the Comp?

I'm more interested in the novelty of newschool skiing on the original twintips than period correct skiing.

Perhaps, but remember these skis were from the days of "backseat driving" ! Having lived through it in the 70's it's easy (too easy!) to revert back to that mode today when I put these skis on.

There was a period of time in the seventies when this was THE most popular/sold ski in the US!

The only Olin of this generation that I would consider mounting center would be the "Ballet", the Mark IV and Comp IV weren't twin tips per say but had turned up tails.

As far as bindings for the IV, if you are looking for the proper period binding, it depends on which generation IV you have, they ran over a 6 +/- year period. Since you had a 444 on yours, I would assume you have one of the earlier IV's, I would the closest bindings if that late 70's that I would comfortably ski (and "match" the IV) would be either the Salomon 727 (metal housed ONLY) or Look N77's (N57's sheared toes too often).

I worked in a ski shop in the late 70s. We steered our customers away from the 444, even though it was the most popular binding at the time, because of how quickly they developed problems causing pre-releases or no-releases.

The only bindings from that era that I would trust today is the Look N-77 because it is have few moving parts and they are all big & sturdy. I discovered some N-77s in a box this weekend with brakes. How much are they worth to you?

What I was getting at is that many of the Freestyle/Bump and even Slalom skis from the 70's were very "rear waisted" for their length. Here are the actual dimensions;

Philpug...I'd sure like to see you mount them up on a suitable ski and use them. No finer binding out there

Phil, they are not new but they've been in a box for the past 30 years I packed them away the year I graduated from college (1979) expecting to mount them on some skis once I was close to skiing again. Due to the last great recession I ended up in Chicago for a year and Dallas for 6. The bindings were forgotten until this past weekend when I decided to clean out some boxes in my garage & much to my surprise found them.

Damn, I agreed to send them to Phil before I realized they were the comp model with the mega heavy springs. I probably could have sold them on TGR for a hefty sum.

Hmmmm.... not to hijack the thread, but I have some mid-80's vintage Marker MRR's in a box somewhere (used, but good). Should I try to sell those on TGR? I had 'em on my Dynastar Course SL's from that era, when I was a stupid college student. With size 13 feet, my DIN is 9 tops. What was I thinking with a binding that starts at about 8.5?

I assume you're refering to getting new bindings mounted, because good luck finding a shop that will mount vintage bindings unless they have you sign a liability release waiver if they're even willing to do that.

No love for older Markers there and those are also probably not indemnified either. The do make some nice door knockers though.
