Why allow SPAM and Free advertising - Classified = top of new posts page.

How about disconnecting the classified section from the new posts page.

I see spam adds from people with 1 post (the add itself).

Well then what would happen when someone with 9,679 posts wants to sell something and there post never shows up on the new posts page?

His post would be at the top of the classifieds.  Anybody looking to buy something would look at the classifieds.  Maybe we should limit the classifieds to people who have 100 posts?

I don't know how others do it, but often when I buy things from other members I am not actively looking for them. usually it is something I want eventually, and I happen across a good deal and decide that I "need" it now.

Are you talking about specifically classifieds, or the whole gear swap section? IIRC gear swap is already restricted to supporters. I like the 100 (or even 25) post limit to post in the classifieds section.

If it's not in New Posts I am not very likely to see it.

My dog loves the bumps too.

I can understand the impulse buying thing.  Maybe a post limit to post in classified is the best option.

I was assuming this.

Problem is, if ALL classified posts are not shown in new posts, a lot of people will miss out on things because they never see them. This is what BF and i were talking about.

This is a SPAM filtering issue, not a forum structure issue. What makes the classified section any different then the other sections in this regard? I'm in support of a minimum post count requirement, but once the spammers are blocked from classifieds they will just start posting in everything else. And you can't require a minimum post count to post in all forums, obviously. For what it's worth, i check the new posts 3-4x a day and really don't see that many spam posts...

The spam filters are getting a lot better compared to what they were 2-months ago, but still have a way to go.  My routine here when logging into EpicSki is to first look at the new members list.  When I see someone with the word "phone", "electronics" "sell" "plaza" "store" in their username or email, I pretty much ban them on the spot. even if they have not posted yet.  I'd say you guys see maybe 10% of the spam I deal with, and the site is constantly cleaned up of posts that do get through.   Spammers can post one message every ten-seconds.  Most of the real hard core stuff is in fact trapped and never seen.

The more elusive stuff is from well-meaning people who want to promote a blog, product, trip or vacation home.  We have a commercial policy in the site terms and conditions, and we constantly have to move promotional posts out of the forum and advise (warn) people that in fairness to our paid sponsors, such promotions are not allowed.

Thanks to those of you who report posts that get past the filters, cause its nearly impossible to go through all the forums.
