Hello all,
I am looking for a couple new pairs of skis for the upcoming season, and I am considering the 2010 Volkl line. I would like to get a fat, powder specific ski such as the Kuro or Chopstix as well as a more everyday-type condition ski, for which I am considering the Gotama and the Katana.
Me: I live in Bozeman, MT and most of my days are spent at Big Sky, Bridger Bowl, or Moonlight Basin. I am 6'5'', about 185lbs, and a level 8-9 skiier but with room for improvement in technique. I ski mostly steeps and a lot of uncontrolled backcountry, though usually accessed through the resort gates. If familiar with the Bozeman areas, I spend a lot of time on Big Sky's Big Couliour and A-Z chutes (and Moonlight's Headwaters), and the lines off the new Slushman's lift at Bridger.
My experience with fat skis is limited since I haven't been able to afford a new pair of skis until now; I spent last season pounding the final nail in the coffin on my 2006 Solomon 1080s and finished the season on a pair of inherited Solomon Crossmax, way too skinny for the deep Montana pow.
I want a powder ski that's long enough for my height and will float well and turn effortlessly, but can also handle narrow chutes. In the more all-around catagory, I want to be able to shred crud, handle steep hardpack, dance through moguls, and hold an edge while ripping groomers back to the lift (too much to ask?). Also, the mountains around here are composed heavily of andesite, a type of rock which eats skis alive, so durability is a definite plus!
Any advice pertaining to the Volkl line up, or any other ski that you think I should consider, would be much appreciated!
