Advice on Skis for My Son....Haven't looked in a couple of years..

my son has outgrown his skis and i need to get him some new (used) ones. he's been skiing on atomic sl12's for the past couple of seasons. usually we pick up a pair from a local ski team where they get new gear every season. that's where his current skis come from. my son is a good and pretty aggressive rec skier but does not race. he's 5'5" inches and i forget his weight but solid and h/w proportional for his age for someone that gets a decent amount of exercise. i haven't followed the new ski gear for the past couple of years and wonder what might be a good suggestion for him. ideally would look for good condition used instead of new. he prefers shorter radius turns and we ski out west (sierra and rockies). thanks for the advice/suggestions!!

I have a similar sized 13 y.o. boy who is my 3rd of 3 sons who all went through that stage.  I would suggest getting him a softer twin tip ski which can usually be found at reasonable costs even for new ones (non-current year models).  Kids enjoy "goofing off" when skiing - hitting jumps on the edge of the trail,  skiing in the terrain parks,  exploring through the trees,  etc.  Most of the twins still work great when skiing seriously with Dad - bumps, groomers,  glades,  whatever.

Mine is using some fairly old hand-me-downs - Dynastar Concepts 155 cm.  Next year he'll likely inherit his older bros 168 cm Troublemakers.  The boys have fun on these yet can still ski all-mountain in all but icy conditions (we just go home if the snow's that bad).

I even became convinced this year and bought myself some Big Troubles to go with my older Ski Crosses (for bumps/harder snow),  so now I guess I have a "quiver"!

It's all about having fun!

AM.

JimS on tetongravity.com/forums has a pair of 159 K2 Public Enemies with 10-DIN Look bindings for sale cheap.  They'd be a fine option.

I've got a pair of lightly used 169 Nordica Enforcers.  They are 100 mm under foot and twin tip with PX 12 binders.  Great ski, but too short for me.
