Hi Jordan

Maybe you can point me in the right direction.  I cannot seem to find any where to go to get an answer to my question.

I am looking for some technical assistance on mounting a pair of Head Monster 95 OB 181 cm with Dynafit TLT bindings.  When I look at the center mark on the 95 OB skis it seems to me to be way too far forward.  When I lay the ski down beside a 186 cm Head Monster 85 IM and line up the boot center marks of the two skis the tail of the 95 OB is 3.17 cm further back that the 85 IM even though the ski is 5 cm shorter.  If I set the skis so that they line up with the 181 95 OB centered on the 186 85 IM using the points where the base contact a flat surface the center point as marked on the 95 OB is a full 4.5 cm further forward that the 85 IM center.  That is allot and it seems to me that it will be a problem both for skiing the ski as well as for climbing when you want the tip to stay in the track.  Do you know who I can speak to about this or where I can go to get an answer?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Bruce,
I lined the 181cm Monster 95 OB up next to the closest ski we have in length from the Monster series which is a 183cm Monster 78.  The center marks on those matched up with the Monster 95 OB.  The Monster 78 was about 1cm longer in both the tip and tail when the center marks were even which is where they should be.
I would doubt that your center mark is off but if you want to check...with a tape measure on the tail (the farthest point, not the inlet for the skins) I measured 79cm to the center point.  Doing the same from the tip with the tape measure actually going from the tip of the ski it was 101cm to the center point.  Hope that helps.

Thanks Jordan that is very interesting because my boot center mark measured as you describe on the base of the ski it 81 cm from the tail and 99 cm from the tip.  That would make the marks on my skis 2 cm too far forward which appears to confirm my suspicions.  I have also sent an e-mail to Head to see if they will send me factory spec measurements.  I will post details as I get them.

Guys there are threads all over this site on binding position.  Many places.  Papers I've written on research and others. you absolutely cannot compare binding positions by putting skis side by side.  Measure the centre of the running surface and then compare.  By the way the mark on the ski is not the ski centre if that is what you are thinking, unless you are looking at a park ski.

Thanks Lou for your comments.  I have read all of the articles on your web site related to binding location and found them very informative.  Using the method described in your 2008 article on binding position and balance, I have determined that the MBS % RS of the 181 cm Head 95 OB skis I am speaking of is 53.9482 %.  That is a 1583 mm RS with a marked boot center at 854 mm from the tip contact point.  I have coresponded with a ski dealer in Colorado who measured the same model ski in his shop although I cannot confirm it was the same model year.  The center point as marked on his ski would generate a MBS%RS of 55.216% as his boot center mark was measured to be 2 cm rearward of the mark on my ski.  This all has me most perplexed.  Do you have any suggestions.  Do you mount Dynafit touring bindings in your shop or can you recommend a shop in Edmonton that uses similar techniques to yours for binding placement.

By way of background I have skied since I was 6, some 50 years.  I raced as a youth and have a CSI pin.  I had a misspent youth with 6 consecutive ski seasons in Europe and around North America of 100 days plus in my 20's.  I cycle and kayak all summer and ski hard, both alpine and alpine touring 15 to 40 days a year.  I am 183 cm and 79 kg and wear a size 28.5 ski boot.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

That's a great price on Head.  I'm definitely looking into purchasing the 78s in a 177.  Still got a pair?  I can pay for them now, and pick them up around Thanksgiving, if you can hold on to them at your shop.

One question: Are these skis the same construction as the iM88 (which I currently ski in a 186)?  If not, what are the differences?

PS: do you mount bindings?  I'd like to mount some older Rossi Race plates on these and it'll be hard to find someone down here in NM that has the right jig.  If you do high-end mounting, that would make my life much easier!

Hey Dan, sorry we've sold out of the iM 78's in all but 183cm.  They do have the same construction and features as the iM 88 so ski quite similarly aside from the width difference.
I'll post below an update of what we have and you can always check the website for the most up to date inventory.

Thanks,
Jordan
