Tune-up for kids hand-me-down snowboard, do it myself or get a full tune done?

I'm mainly a skier but I need to ask a SB question.

We were given a hand-me-down SB for our 8yo son.  He's been skiing for a few years but wants to try SB too.

The edges are a bit rusty and the base is dry.  It's going to need at least a bit of tuning.

I have ski tools to do everything but base grinds.  I have a 1* base file guide, 3* edge file guide, files, diamond stones, waxes, irons, scrapers, etc.  I not expert enough to tune my skis from the start but after a yearly base grind, I keep them tweaked myself.

Now for skis, everyone's fussy about getting the angles right.  If I take my files and get the rust of the edges without getting a base-grind done, I imagine the base bevel will be a bit much.  Do I really care for a kids learner board?

So, should I just to a quick tune job at home to get the rust off and wax or should I pay a store to do a base-grind and full tune?

My two cent,

First, does your son know the difference skiing on freshly tuned skis---versus the day before when they were not fresh??  Never had an 8yo skier so I'm asking!

The answer does not really change my advice, I was just curious.  But if he can't----it leads the answer ----- why pay?  If he can, I'd still do it myself----cuz it is a new sensation and it will be awhile before he'll be able to tell----by then you'll be expert at SB tuning!

I'd do the rust removal and edge tune up my self, give the board a good waxing and see what happens in the kids LESSON.

to me thats the key, LESSONS from a good SB instructor.

A little too much edge bevel might be an OK thing at first---less likely catch an edge while figuring out all the new moves!

Yeah, he'll get a lesson.  I'm a ski instructor and he'll be taking a lesson with someone I know at my home moutain where I've worked for the last 12 years.  I can hop on rentals and join a lesson for free so I'll probably take a lesson with him, at at least at the same time if they split adults and kids that day.  I've only done one SB lesson and that was 12 years ago so I'm looking to try it again.

At Winter Park and at Loveland those are 'family privates'.  No mixing kids and adults in group lessons.  They learn differently.

I teach snowboarding and pegger ski biking at Winter Park Resort.  
What's pegger ski biking?  Glad you asked!

Not in the same group, just at the same time.  I work at the area and can jump in class for free.  Our learning center group lessons always split-- kids in one group, teens and adults in another.

I took one SB lesson about 12-13 years ago. It was actually at my home mountain the year before I started teaching there.  I had been up north skiing bumps for three days and just got back to Mass and my nephew from NJ was visiting and wanted to try SB so I took a lesson with him.  My legs were pretty much luck rubber but I still had fun and did get down the trail a few times.  I've been meaning to try again for a long time but I'm never as good a skier as I want to be so I keep working on my skiing.

Don't let the SSD see you or you will be deemed a snowboard instructor.

Before I started riding I was always waiting for soft snow to take a lesson in, then always wanting to ski the pow instead. I lasted an hour my first time before I went back to skis. It took me a lot of effort and many tries before I got it. At my school I no longer have to worry about turning into a snowboard instructor that occasionally skis. Last year I taught more ski lessons than ride lessons. Either way, it's all about "learning to turn".
