Review of Hostel Tevere in Warren, VT
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is a well run, budget priced hostel that began operation in the Mad River Valley during 2009. It appears to occupy a refurbished old inn and is located on Rt 100 about 1/4 mile south of the Sugarbush access road; three miles to Lincoln Peak base, 5 miles to Mt Ellen base, 10 miles to Mad River Glen ski area, about one hour to Stowe. I stayed there M-F, first week of January 2010. It is clean, convenient, cheap, and casual. They did booming Christmas holiday business, but for my post holiday midweek visit with my son we got a five person bunk room (Superman Room) to ourselves for the entire week. The proprietors are a friendly young couple with prior experience in the restaurant business. They serve breakfast and dinner several days per week. The facilities include a small bar with large screen TV and restaurant section seating about 50. Sometimes on weekends they have live music. The breakfast burritos are very good. The hostel has about 24 beds, separated into four sleeping areas/rooms, all upstairs. Most are bunks, some single beds. The metal bunk beds are oversized and heavy duty with good head room in the lower bunks. The bedding includes a comfortable, regular size twin mattress with a warm down comforter and duvet. The rooms could be somewhat cramped if full. There is one full bathroom with a shower, one half bath with no shower or bathtub, and there is an extra sink in the hall. There is a small sitting room upstairs and a larger one downstairs with wood stove. There is a game room with foosball. Guests also have free access to three computers with internet connectivity. Price: $35 person for high season, $30 for low season. You can reserve ahead via their website www.hosteltevere.com , which I would recommend for weekends.
There were walk-in customers during the week, guests included groups and single men and women. Security seemed good. The vibe is youthful, but I wasn't the only gray haired person staying there during my visit. I highly recommend this place for bargain hunters who don't mind hostel style sleeping arrangements.
