Which ski for Front Side and NASTAR?

Currently Im torn between the 2009 Fischer Progressor 9 and the 2008 Volkl Racetiger GS.

If you were me which ski would you go for?

I race a few weekends a year, however love to bomb down nice groomed slopes doing high speed carving all day long.  So I dont know if I really want a true GS ski or a great front side ski with lots of versitility.  

All help will be appreciated in making my decision.  Thanks in advance. 

Yes you want a GS ski for high speed carving.  Believe me short-radius skis and high speeds are a dangerous combination.

That is the question that we probably can't answer for you.

Keep in mind that a "true" GS ski in any size shorter than a ~~182 would be a ski built for a light kid transitioning toward real FIS skis. Some "cheater" GS skis in that size range will have adult constructions because their kids can't use 'em. If a longer ski can work for you (182-188) then a real GS ski might be in the mix. If you want something short, then a cheater GS ski or a ski like the Progressor or possibly the Contact 4X4 from Dynastar would fit the bill.

I'd go with a cheater for Nastar and other front side ripping at moderate speeds  Something around a 17 radius.  If you love to go really fast and don't run Nastar that often a true GS would be better.

Consider a women's GS ski - 180-183cm, slightly softer than the men's, tighter radius (>23m), but still plenty of ski.

The consensus seems to be that cheater GS skis work well for nastar, the Atomic LT12 or Fischer World Cup RC may be good choices - I can't see a 27m radius ski working too well. Maybe try the nastar forums for more accurate info.

For free skiing find GS skis can be a bit much with other people around.

+1.  Some of the best Nastar racers use those cheater skis with a radius in the teens. 

Both are great skis. The Fischer has a bigger sweet spot, and are more for everyday skiing. It is out of the Fischer race line, more like the Volkl RC.

   The Fischer Progressor 9 is an excellent Nastar ski, the varied side cut lets you get away with poor line choices or dealing with odd course sets. I've been on that ski since it came out and have nothing but good things to say about it. As a Nastar pacesetter it works really well for me since we take early runs before the course is skied in and the wide tip really helps the ski start hooking up in marginal snow[ loose or sugary]. Also spent time out at Bridger Bowl last year in the best snow fall they had all season and the skis worked great in that also, although they where the narrowest skis I saw anybody using out there.

 

   Disclaimer: I am a Fischer pro rep., so there you go, although I've had no complaints from anybody that bought a pair at our hill.

I race nastar although I don't really consider myself anything more than average Nastar racer.  I also race alot of Slalom and GS during the year. Here are my Results.  Almost all of my races at Alpine Valley where on the Rossignol which is a <21m ski.

These are the ski's I use.

2009 Blizzard WC GS 182cm
2009 Fischer WC RC  175cm
2007 Rossignol WC Radical X 181cm

It depends on where you race nastar and how steep it is. 

If you want a front side carver/nastar ski I would go with the Fischer RC, Volkl GS Racing, or Blizzard GSR.

While this post is a shameless plug, as the North American distributor for Kneissl, I might also recommend that you look at our current 2009 / 2010 skis, where you can choose something as full-on race capable as the Kneissl White Star RS and SL (which are built to FIS specifications) to the Red Star RC or Black Star SM.  All of these might be possible candidates for you.
