Toni Sailer, triple gold medalist at the Cortina Olympics in 1956, died yesterday. Great photo of Sailer here:

Ouch...Cassin, then Sailer...the circle of life. Good that they lived such a pelntiful life.

Sailer was the first skier to win all three (eg, long before Super G) alpine golds at a single Olympics. He then triple-golded at the 1958 Worlds, adding a silver as well (there was a gold for combined, which he won; he got the silver in slalom).

Toni Sailer also made at least 3 movies.  He starred as an instructor, mountain guide, or as a mountain climber.  Sorta like a Randolph Scott  on skis, a shy, reluctant hero.  Living in Chicago (in the pre-VCR days) I would set the alarm clock for 3 AM, watch the movie, then go to work.

In an age before 'superstars' in our sport, he was one.  He was a class act, and will always be first seed in our sport.

Thank you for an example of a life well lived.  RIP

My sentiments exactly.
I'll remember both with a smile.

Toni Sailer became the first man to achieve the "alpine sweep" winning the giant slalom, slalom and downhill at the 1956 Winter Games.

Wasn't he the only one to do that?  I've not heard of anyone else winning those three events in the same Olympics.  If not, then who else did it?
I'd rather be skiing

Jean-Claude in 1968(or '64, can't remember which)

i read an article saying he hardly ever skis any more; the few times he goes out it's on a snowboard!

Killy was Grenoble 1968.  Toni was a gent.  I had the good fortune to work for him in the mid '70s with Nancy at the Whistler summer camp.  Good sense of humor.  Class act.
