Buyers Guide Came Last!

Greetings all! Hope everyone is having a great summer!

Just had to yell that I got my first buyers guide last night. I practically ripped it out my wife's hands when she walked in with the mail. She just stood there and shook her head as I salivated like one of Pavlov's dogs.

How long till it snows???

Are we there yet?

It did, but the Mcconkey piece was really cool.

Ski was the one that came still waiting for Skiing. The format was different and either the text got smaller or my eyes are getting worse.

Interesting discussion of rockered skis. Are rockered skis going to be this seasons discussion piece and the ski design to have? After reading how they may have changed the game (again) I get the feeling that they will be this seasons "it"...need 'em or not.

Are we there yet?

I got Skiing, but my reading glasses are in the car.  Minuscule print, but something to read about skiing.  I have been getting that "you've got to be kidding" look from family... and others on the beach.

I prefer hearing what Phil, Sierra Jim and all the other epic folks have to say.

Just picked it up a the local barnes and noble. Not bad really, the layout was stupid, but it was slightly informative and entertaining.  It would have been more entertaining to name the skis on the dog list they wouldn't idenitify. When i get back from vacation i will scan it and put it up here in a new thread. Maybe we can get some very funny laughs with a game to plug in the actual ski the were quoting.

Finally as with all of the mainstream magazines (high end audio, cars, watches etc) the tests always have that underlying taint of ad dollars.  I wonder if the test skis were contact sheet covered. That would make it a true buyers guide. Heck, we all have our favorite brands, or least favorite.

e.g. nordica. Im a bit old school so for me they are a boot maker not a ski maker.  I would be biased in any test ski i knew was a nordica.

Skiing came today, hopefully Ski will come tomorrow.

Skiing is very thin this time, 88 pages.

I'm thinking AC30 or Blizzard Magnum 8.1

Don't need any more wide skis.

This is the ritual every year.  First...excitement that the mags came.  Second..a new thread will sprout that will predictably complain about how useless the ratings are and how its all corrupted by ad money (shocker).  Third...people will argue about how useful the mags are and what are the other sources people use to making decisions.  Fourth, we will all agree that Epic and TGR etc are better places to educate yourself as a consumer and then we will go back to our usual argument about whether fat skis are crutches for bad skiers.  Then...we will all continue to get anxious as we watch for snow in them thar hills.  And so it begins again...the circle of life.

Tough choice there. Really cannot go wrong either way. AC30 will need a bit more attention all the time, the 8.1 will be able to be relaxed on more. But really splitting hairs.

Let the fun begin,

According to Skiing's guide a "Resort On-Piste" ski is now between 77 and 82 mm at the waist, with "Resort Mixed-Piste" ranging between 80 and 90 mm.  Hmmm,,,

Was it last year or two years ago that the RX8 fire (65 at the waist) was the winner of Skiing's on-piste advanced category?  Either way, that's some pretty rapid waist inflation.

What to do with my "outmoded" RX8's??  (A rhetorical question, I think they're fantastic skis for the East Coast).

Maybe they are trying to keep up with the waist of the average American?

RX8 is an amazing ski and one I would easily add to my quiver. I think a on-piste ski should resemble more of a race ski than anything else. I think some people like there on-piste ski to also say in lift line that they ski in the trees and powder whether they do or don't

No one cares that you tele.

I received mine 2 days ago, which snapped me out of my funk and brought me back here. Pretty thin magazine though. I guess ad sales are way down.

Just Got the 2010 Ski Buyers Guide in the Mail - What Happended to Head?

Well it arrived in yeasterday's mail - the 2010 Ski Magazine Buyers Guide.

Not a single Head ski made the buyer's guide, but a pair of Head boots were included.

Blizzard, Nordica and Volkl made the cut in all 6 categories.  Rossignol and K2 are the runner ups (5 of 6 categories) followed by Atomic and Dynastar (4 of 6 categories).

Anybody know what happeded to Head?  Are the new Peak skis really that bad?  Are the Superspeeds, etc., too old to still be competative?

Got the new Powder yesterday.  As a gear guide it was bad.  As a tribute to Shane, I might buy another copy, just to frame on the wall.

From what i've seen, the best "freeride" oriented gear guides are by Freeskier and SBC Skier.  They don't test race skis or carvers, but their readers don't want to read about them.

Does anybody have any more info on the 2010 Elans for me?  Like some info on the 1010 Alu?

They are both on "skinet". FWIW, Skinet also says Epicski is a great source for researching skis.

Yeah, the Peaks aren't as good as the Monsters. The 88 did make the top 10 in one of the mags.

The 1010 is a nice ski, same construction as the 888 just wider.

Got mine yesterday and today in the mail. Yeah, what did happen to Head? And I've just about read both Ski and Skiing cover to cover. The usual pros and cons, but It really is great to have some new ski porn. The mags were slight so far this year, a reflection both of the economy hitting the skiing industry and the general decline of magazine ad pages. It made me think that what would we do without these rags?.. wander around the internet perhaps, but the print is great to have. Ski had better graphics, Skiing a great piece on McConky. None of the pics in either mag does justice to the new skis this year, however. I was in one of our local shops today getting kid skis- Sports Den in SLC- and they had a full wall of new product. Fondled the new rockerd Gotamas... a real thing of beauty. Almost had an accident...

Funny, recently while looking for ski info to post for inquiring threads here on epicski, when I do a google search, I'm getting links to reviews and info on EpicSki.  Interesting, eh?

Nordica makes top of the heap skis.  I have loved my Top Fuels.  It' time for a replacement - thinking of Top Fuels.

What's up with Head?  I know that Head is squeezed big time for money.  Maybe they didn't pony up.  Pay to play??

Head fixed the Monster series (now Peak) till they broke, they neutered them. If you liked your Hot Rods, take a look at the new HR Pro flat, it is in the vein of the old Monsters and your Hart's. There are 78 and 84 waisted models.
