Do fat skis still suck?

Actually, my Praxis Powderboards (- 50m turn radius) are a lot of fun on harder snow. Impossible to carve, but a lot of fun. Carving is way overrated.

Carving skis suck. Fat skis wish they could.

I never leave home without at least one pair of my fatties.

I traveled to Switzerland a few years back with only my DH skis and my Atomic Powder Plus 165cm. I was racing in the Parsenn Derby and with luggage restrictions that's all I could take. I inspected and euro inspected the DH on the 165s, ran the automatic speed trap at the resort at 100kph on them, skied the 6 inches of heavy powder on them and was challenged on the early morning ice on them. I had a great time.

Question the rider, not the ride.

If you think fat skis make powder skiing too easy, then send you next post to this forum without a computer. Technology does has its advantages.

Some times you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.

Options are good.

I guess that made about sense as the rest of this thread.

Funny stuff. I never remember hearing anyone cry about some of the early 'powder skis like my '95 Snow Rangers, or HeliDogs. Not fair, makes skiing powder easier! Sure, but you still have to have some knowledge and good conditioning for your steez. I think you still see weak pow skiers.
I'm hopin' to settle in on the mid 90 range, been on a 91 wide 180 for the past two seasons with a RF14 so I could very the ride. That rig was a bit short on me for maching in the pow. This year I'm going 94 at 187. As an X-carver my pref is not as wide as some.

FYI I do see more of the 'wierd-looking' stuff on the frontside than on the backside of the mt.

I see bad powder skiing on fat and skinny skis. And bad hard-snow skiing on everything from fatties to race skis (though a lot of that flailing I see on hardpack is me).

You can't blame people for trying to get better by updating their gear, though it only helps to a certain degree. Technique first, of course.

I don't want a holiday in the sun

IMO - fat freakskis are a crutch. Real men ski powder on early 90's GS race skis.

I'm calling BS on that until I see beer league folks racing on them and winning.

I'd rather be skiing

I don't know where you are coming from as I haven't noticed your handle before. I'm assuming you are serious with your response. If not, just ignore what follows.

To analogize, I'm being a sissy for driving a 4 wheel drive truck with snow tires in CO. I would be a real man if I drove a '76 Oldsmobile Delta 88, rear wheel drive with all season tires.

In both the ski and automobile scenarios, your 'real man' choice would far more likely leave me stuck and missing out on the goods. I don't need crutches except for medical reasons. I do use 'fat freakskis' and love them.

You are free to have and express your own opinion. As is so often the case in this forum, differences of opinion are presented in a right vs wrong/good vs bad/manly vs unmanly light.

I can take a good ribbing, but if you're not serious, use some emoticons.

BTW, I carry a tow strap in my sissy truck, so if I see you in a ditch, I'll give you a pull.

Why are people always saying bad things about Fat Skiers?  They are trying just as hard as everyone else.  It is just harder because they are fat.  And what exactly are they sucking anyway?

What?

Oh!  Neverminddddddddddddd

Wait a second, jer, aren't those fat skis in your avatar photo?

I guess I took it hook, line and (if I'd been on '90s GS skis) sinker.

Lemme guess - a psychological profile is next?

Jer's just trying to stir up trouble here...he'll viciously attack somebody who responds to his bizarre first post and then tell them to lighten up and not take his little jokes so seriously when they fire back at him. It'll all be your fault in the end.
I've heard that he doesn't like it when people turn the same tactics back on him...

That's ok. I never post anything that I'll regret so I never feel like a fool even when I've been duped.

My motto is "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing, because nothing nice will come of it". I took a look at some of his other posts and he does seem to add a bit of vitriol to threads he participates in.

Alright, Jer hasn't gotten the response he desired here yet, so I'll volunteer.

Those freakboards are good for siding an outhouse with, Jer, and you still ski like a blindfolded hippo with inner ear problems.

I'm waiting with bated breath.

Bated breath....
wawa, great word "bated"....haven't heard used in 159 years....thought it was "baited"...esp where Jer is concerned...

Carry on!

This is really weird, because 159 is one of my favorite numbers (M159 Stan Musial baseball bat model...long story).
Can anybody say karma, fate, or serendipity?

Yeah - 'cause everybody knows that carving powder is where it's at. Is that even physically possible?

I would say there are more people carving in powder than there are people carving on groomers.  I know that I was making carved turns in powder long before I had it down on firm snow, but I guess that depends on your definition of carving.

Yeah, but our season here should start in 3 short months (probably earlier for you). I need to power wash the snowblades and dry clean the pink and purple fart bag soon.

20 years ago this was a pretty accurate statement.

Fully rigid MTB-ing, taking the DH circuit by storm.  Aussies are quaking.
