Summer Skiing Jackson Hole 8-15-09

Summer's on its way out.  Good riddance.

We had more snow on the mountains yesterday (Sunday, 8-16).  Here's Sleeping Indian on Sunday morning, with new snow down to about the 9,000 foot level:

On Saturday, I went out to do my turns for August.  I wussed out and did the "easy" route, which is a 30-turn snow patch on the Powder 8 slope on Cody Bowl.  It's only about a 40-minute hike from the top of the Jackson Hole tram, so it's a great place to do a summer "quickie".  As it turned out, we goofed around a little once we were out there.

This is me at the top of the snow patch:

Bouncing-around on the runnels and sun cups:

Flex-testing my Head backcountry skis on a particularly nice runnel:

Ruthie thought it looked fun so she put my 27.5 boots on her 23.5 feet to go make a run with a little help from our friend's dog Bodhi:

Then we headed off to another little snow patch for some silliness:

Here I am getting ready to launch a little summer air (and if you believe that, we've got some great bridges for sale)':

Preparing to tuck the headwall:

Coming out of the tuck to prepare for the somewhat abrupt runout:

Bodhi in downhill speed mode.  If you click on the photo and then click again to enlarge it, you can see that he's just about to chomp down on a snowball I threw for him:

Just another stupid day in JH.

There are no stupid days in Jackson Hole, only stupid people who don't take advantage of the days, and you and Ruthie are NOT among that group.  If this cooler weather continues, your September turns might include fresh powder-over-runnels.

On a non-skiing note, is Ruthie ready for LoToJa this year?

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day . . .

Great pictures Bob.  I'm back in town next week for the season so give me a call when it's time for September turns!

How did you get the dog up there?  Do they let them on the tram in the summer?

Bodhi is a service dog, so he's allowed to ride the tram.  He does companion dog and other stuff like that.

"Regular" dogs aren't allowed on the tram.

So that's what you were doing on Saturday.  I was in town, and went by the realty to say hi.  Pretty cold day rafting on the Snake, but still lots of fun.  Come on, winter!

Preliminary plans call for a hike/slog to the top of the Apex on the way up Teewinot in Teton Park.  There's a moderately long snowfield up there and it seems to be hanging in pretty well.  That'll mean a two-hour+ hike carrying skis and boots and then - maybe -  about 40 turns.  Weather permitting, it would be on my birthday - otherwise known as Sept 16.

I'll let you know as the date gets nearer.

I got your note under the door.  Thanks for stopping by and I'm sorry I missed you.  I'm going to blame my partner for leaving the tv on in the office as it was on a channel I never visit.

I'm glad you had fun on the Snake.  The river is in really good shape right now and the fishing is improving every day.

 30 turns!

DAYAM, Bob!

I've been lucky to get a successive run of 10 turns on any of the patches I've milked this summer.

Solid stoke, solid stoke, mucho gracias for the solid stoke.

That's awesome!  You guys have it so good out there.  A few turns in mid August and the fishing is good.

Fishing here has been brutal as of late.  Storm system after storm system rolling through giving the fish lock jaw.  It's been a really weird Summer.

Flights are booked for January 9th.  Hope to make some turns with you again.  Teach Dave lots between now and then he's our official tour guide :)  I expect him to know where all the goods are by then.

She applied for LOTOJA this year but didn't get drawn.  She was bummed.

Now it turns out she's going climbing in Yosemite instead.  (And I'm going back to Alaska, so I'm in a very good mood about that.)
