Ski advice: skis for mum!

Hi all, first post on here :)

Little bit of background. We mostly ski Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand, Mum skis generally as a rule on-piste.

She is a an intermediate skiier but her confidence level doesn't reflect that and recently purchased some 50,000 year old Blizzard skis on our equivalent of ebay that haven't helped things at all.

What I'm looking for is something that is forgiving but will encourage her to get some nice turns happening. I guess a flattering/easy kind of ski. She's 55, ~ 5" & I guess about 50-60kg (110-130 pounds).

She demoed a Volkl Fuego and didn't like it much.

Any ideas?

I am assuming by 50,000 year old you mean straight skis . Correct ?

Has Mum tried renting(for hire) skis  ?   She has some adjusting to do with learning to ski them and by a bit of exploration she can find one she feels more comfortable on. 

If she can afford a 'get acquainted with  the new ski gear' lesson it would give her a better understanding of what to expect from newer gear than 50,000 year old Blizzards

She might not like any of them until she gets a little time  to feel what they can do for her with much less input than much older skis that had very little shape.

I had a Mom who skied with us when we were small and the memories are treasures. You got a cool  Mom . Hopefully we can help her get a bit more fun out of her skiing by trying some newer gear.

Some recommendations for a less demanding ski than the Fuegos would be a good idea.

They're what I'd guess would be a first generation carver, they have a small amount of sidecut & are very narrow underfoot. She's previously rented and skiied on (from memory) Dynastar Omecarves & probably pretty similar rental stuff, which I would say were much better for her.

A lesson is definitely on the cards.

And yeah it's great to ski with Mum :)

Maybe a K2 One Luv (or the upcoming Free Luv), I liken the characteristics of the Volkl to be BMW like, they need to be skied, like a BMW likes to be driven, where the K2 is like a Lexus that can be relaxed on and is a lot more tolerant. 

That does look like a good ski :). They had some demos up the mountain but only lotta luv's in the women's line and I didn't think they'd be a great choice.

Can probably easily enough organise a demo of those too.

The Lotta Luv is actually pretty close in sidecut to a One Luv and would not be "too much ski" so long as it's selected in an appropriate length.

What she said^^^

Phil touched on the ideal selection for someone that you describe but the Lotta Luv is a good ski for someone who is advancing, yet forgiving enough to serve a range of women's abilities.
