Trip plans for 2010 yet?

Just made reservations for a family trip in 2010.  Our extended family is ~12 ... including the Queen,  g-children, sons-in-law, children and a young couple.

We'll be skiing and riding at Big Mtn, Mt the week of Jan 15th - Jan 23rd.  I think this is my 4th trip to Big Mtn, and just can't say enough goods things about the place.  My one regret is not connecting with some of the local Bears this past January to get a line on the hidden stashes and sweet lines (Sorry Sibby), but will hopefully correct this next year.

The Queen says if I'm not skiing ,,, I'm thinking about it.  Guess this proves her right - again

Dec: Stowe for ESA East

Jan: Jackson Hole 3rd week

Mar/Apr: ESA Big Sky

May: A-Basin for Mothers Day

Plus weekend trips to Vermont. I doubt I will get as many days in as I did this year (I said that last year too), but I will still shoot for quality over quantity.

I will be trying to avoid Finndog's tracks and get some fresh ones of my own...

In addition to hitting the local areas 2-3 times a week, I may try to met a friend who is attending a conference in Jackson late January and take advange of at least a few of the 6 days at Steamboat I have on the Rocky Mnt Super+ pass I signed up for last month (especially if I can find a local who wants to swap guest rooms to hit Copper).  I also try to make our annual guys trip which has been to Aspen in recent years,

From June 5 to September its Mt Buller, maybe  New Zealand for a naughty weekend, and Squaw and Heavenly over January 2010. Yes, I'm unashamedly  greedy.

December: who knows, Shiga or Hakuba if the snow is early; Hakuba 28-30.

January: Niseko 4-8 and again 16-20; possibly Rusutsu 25-27, or

February: 1-3, Nozawa 8-10; Rockies (SLC/Steamboat/Banff?) 15 to

March 3: Hokkaido 2nd or 3rd monday-wednesday, Niseko if it's still good, or Asahidake.

Somewhere in there I'd like to get up to Zao and do some runs with Samurai, and while it probably won't happen next season, sooner or later (sooner I hope) I'm going to get Prickly to show me around Made...

I will be in bend visiting my sister over christmas, so I guess that means Bachelor. If i drive, I might hit up red/whitewater along the way. I am hoping to ski Jackson this Feb. Was planning on making a trip to Bozeman this winter, but I ran out of ski money. Bozeman and Revy are two places I would like to hit this year. Other than that, I will be at Castle.

Well, I live in Whitefish, so I'll step in and give a BIASED view of things.

Our snow is not always the light fluffy blow away stuff you can see in Utah.  Sometimes it is, but mostly it has a somewhat heavier, stay put, consistency.  On the other hand, it's not "Sierra cement".  It's dry most of the time, but not so dry that it blows away before you can get to ski it.

Crowds, aside from Christmas, are negligible.  We bitch if we have to wait for a chair AT ALL midweek.  Saturdays are busy, schedule your arrival and departure for Saturdays.  Sundays are not that bad at all, most folks locally are in church until noon or so.

EXCELLENT place for intermediates (big category, however, you need to tie down your "level" (1-9) a bit).  There are long cruising runs 360 degrees off the summit.  The north side (back) always has outstanding snow conditions due to its exposure.  The main slope to get to that part of the mountain can be busy ("Fill Slope" or "Ant Hill").

EXCELLENT place to learn to ski in trees.  There are the little trees in the "tree farm" on the back -- gentle slope, widely spaced by January (the smaller trees are completely buried by then).  There are widely spaced trees with a bit of incline on Good Medicine, widely spaced trees with more incline on Elephant's Graveyard.  Much tighter trees in Windowpane, but islands of openness so that you can test them out.  Very tight trees in Connie's Coulee, Back Nine, Teepee Town, et al.

FOR THE THRILL SEEKERS, there is the East Rim area, east side of it has North Bowl Chute and some cliffs.  Then there is Picture Chutes over in Hellroaring Basin.  You can escape those cliffs by a detour over to Gray's Golf Course where there is steepness without the stone cliffs of PC.  Big Horn is for those who want the short thrill of the drop in, following by (I understand) tamer stuff.

BUMPS are on Black Bear and Marmot.  Gentler bumps are on Middle Mully's.  Occasional bumps are on No Name and Heap Steep, depending on conditions.

"Expert" terrain for intermediates is Moose, Heaven, Big Face.

There is a whole separate "terrain park" area, off its own chair, for those who like that.  However, there is no more superpipe.

There are also separate beginner areas.

I don't really know too much about slopeside accommodations, other than that they exist. Hibernation House is more of a hostel, then there are the private condos and Morning Eagle facility that are high end.  Most of the night action is in town, so you need to make a choice about staying slopeside or in town.  There is a Snow Bus if you would like to avoid a rental car, but it runs only every 1/2 to 1 hour.

Transport to the area is flying into Glacier Park International airport (FCA) or by train.  The distance from Glacier in minutes to the ski area is 20-25 depending on road conditions, only about 15 minutes to the town of Whitefish.  The train stops right in Whitefish.  Some of the hotels have shuttle arrangements possible, as do some of the B&B's.  Two central booking efforts would be the mountain (which only books to its own facilities) or Flathead Travel (best to talk to them in person -- they have bulk airfares available as well).

I don't know anything about the kids training, having a grown kid who came here as a racer.  They've got a Magic Carpet area for them, that's all I know.

The "tone" of the place is NOT "Vail" or "Deer Valley".  It's NOT GLITZ.  Leave the fur and Bogner at home.  It's also not "cowboy" (we're logging history and trains, not cows).  We're more of the "functional" crowd.

Telemark skiing and backcountry skiing is big here, as is facial hair.

Oh yeah, and we have FOG.  That can be a big issue for some, but it keeps the snow from being baked by sun, so the snow quality lasts longer.  When we don't have fog, we have spectacular scenery, with 360 degree views (see some of my pictures in the reviews section).  We also have these neat things called snowghosts, a product of the moisture in cold air freezing to anything in its vicinity.  The kids always enjoy that.

I have no concrete plans, but with the months of January and February and most of March completely free, I'm considering a road trip through interior BC, Northern Idaho, and/or Montana.  All I would like is company, which I don't have yet.

I slide.

If PeteNoIdaho doesn't see this, PM him, he's in Idaho and would be company while you're there.  I am around for Big Mtn, I assume the infamous VA is available for tours of Snowbowl and possibly others.

December, maybe Stowe ESA-East

Dec 25 - Jan 4 Big Sky

February somewhere - sometime

March 4 - March 14 Big Sky

April, maybe ESA Big Sky

Haven't skied the east since I discovered the west30 years ago so I'm about ready to try it again. December and March are set. February will be planned after the Christmas trip based on time available. April may be tough this year with family obligations revolving around graduations.

No problem, If I can't get out to ski I'll just play more golf.

Dustyfog, Sibby has the more comprehensive response here as she is local to Big Mtn. I can share my perspective on the lodging, travel in, snow, places to eat and overall feel for the area.

On lodging, we own a timeshare and stay at Meadowlake Resort in Columbia Falls ... about 15 miles from the mountain.  If you're a timeshare owner you can't beat the price or quality of the resort.  There are slopeside places and the resort web page has the details on these.

Usually I travel in to Spokane and drive over as the cost was about 40% less than flying directly into Kalispell airport. The Kalispell airport is the more direct, closest route and only about 15 miles from the mountain.  I tried the train ride in January, but found this to be very unreliable.  While in route to Chicago the morning I was to catch the train, Amtrak mgmt canceled the trip.  Imagine my reaction at leaving Raleigh early in the morning, flying to Chicago. lugging my gear from O'Hare to Union Station, only to be told the trip was canceled.  We did go as far as Minneapolis but that was it.  My opinion with the train once you get on the train it's fine.  Seating is like first class airline seating, only bigger - plenty or room to store your gear - dining cars are nice.  In the train stations, it was at best chaotic.  Amtrak personnel were a cross between postal - DMV workers ... don't care, take it or leave style service.

Snow ... the snow is in between Utah-Colorado powder and East Cost snow ... even fresh East Coast snow.  It's a bit wetter than the pure Utah powder, but close.  When there about 3 years ago it snowed ~4 inches each night 2 or 3 times and skiing was simply fabulous.  As to the slopes ... Sibby has the best response.  For beginners, there are 2 lifts at the main lodge when the beginner skiing slopes are great.  Chair 2 takes you up to some shorter slopes and chair 1 to the summit with great cruisers ... Big Ravine, Toni Matt, etc.  North slopes are fun too - Chair 7.

Places to eat are plentiful in Whitefish and surrounding areas.  In Whitefish you'll find sushi, pub-grub, a coffee house, family style and the Buffalo Cafe', with absolutely the best breakfast in the west!  Too, you have to check out the Hell Roarin Saloon slopeside - it has my vote for best slopeside restaurant anywhere!

Overall feel for the resort and area is welcoming, respectful and exudes class.  Whitefish is not a party town ... it's not pretentious, uppity or glittery.  The people there look you in the eye, treat you with respect, are warm and welcoming.  While there in January for 2-weeks I can't begin to tell you about riding the lift with people who moved from the East cost there, and who said "NO" before I could finish asking if these would ever consider moving back East.

For us ... can't hardly wait until January

My son and I will be skiing somewhere western for his February school vacation.  We may go back to Kirkwood (we were only there 2 days) but it may depend on airfare and other deals I can find.

I hope to get another "just me" trip next year (my last year before college tuition, yikes).  I'm hoping to do ESA Big Sky, especially since my boss asked me not to take 2 weeks off in February next year.  (I saw Nolo's comment that ESA may skip Big Sky in another thread.  Maybe that will change,)  A different option would be to do the gathering again, since if I recalll correctly people were talking about January in Utah.

I also hope to do a few spur-of-the-moment big storm trips back here in New England.  It's been several years since I've managed to do storm chasing.
