I was at Boy Scout camp last week with my older son at Crescent Lake, Oregon in the Cascades.

Crescent lake looking across to Diamond Peak.

Since it is pretty boring for the dads two of us brought our MTBs and went for a ride. The original destination was Oldenberg Lake; about 1300' over 4 miles on a soft trail that had been pulverized by horses.
This is Oldenberg lake at around 6200'.

This is Dave and me (with the bike).

We then basically traversed another 4 miles to one of the clearest lakes you have seen, Darlene lake. By then we were so hot and dusty we had to go for a swim...how refreshing before the bumpy 4 mile downhill.

I was hot, tired, and dirty after the ride, but it felt good. I know this is not much "stoke" but the scenery is pretty. I just wish I could get out and ride more often.

Interstingly enough, no. While Mt. Bailey Snowcat is based out of Diamond Lake resort the lake is not next to Diamond peak...which is apparently named after the man who made the first ascent and not because of any geological features.

Are you still in Tahoe? I haven't seen any of your great bike trip reports lately. I love your pictures.

I am still in Tahoe. I broke my toe chasing a bear that broke into the house. I can still ride but nothing worth posting. I'm in the midst of house painting project & a guide friend is visiting from Val Disere, France. But here's a picture of the bike I may be getting if everything works out.

TC: The boy scouts own some amazing properties here in the northwest, including one with about two miles of oceanfront property. They also have three mountain lodges on Mt. Hood as well as a horse ranch.

JF: Did you catch him when you chased him? Maybe you should put some of those inner city safety bars on your windows to keep the riffraff/bears out. My brother that skied with us owns a steel shop and could probably build some for you. Nice bike. Hope your toe gets better soon.

I had a bear on my front porch a couple years ago. It was tearing at my screen when I turned the light on and saw him
I went for the camera but he was long gone by the time I got back.
I think I scared the crap out of him, meanwhile he tore up my bird feeders and l created a mess on my porch.

I wish he'd come back, I want a picture.

When you picking up the bike?

We had a 400lb ish male in the back yard early last Saturday morning. It tore open a cage full of peanut butter suet and knocked over a fence pole that I had driven into the ground for a bird feeder pole.

I was very happy to see him go back over the fence. 6 dogs barking and me yelling at him with my mag light, in my schivies, thats enough to scare anyone: ). That bear was fearless!

I had one in my garage a few weeks ago. I'm buck naked and he bangs on teh door to the house. I went down to the gun safe and did a quick scan. Started to reach for a shotgun. Nope. Reached past the 7mm Rem Mag and al of the smaller caliber rifles and pulled out the .375 H&H. I felt a little silly standing in the kitchen with a big rifle. Luckily bike parts saved the day. The bear got himself tangled up in a stack of DH tires and then ran off.

^^ LOL, Maybe we should start a bear thread. If George (the bear that broke into my house, & then tried to get through my bedroom window the next morning) comes back & I get a picture I'll start one. I only have a pellet gun that I borrowed from my brother. It won't do much damage, but maybe it'll scare him enough to stay away. I have soda cans full of pebbles strung outside my window as a 1st alert system, & hopefully to scare him off. Apparently, the pebbles sound like a rattlesnake & bears don't like rattlers. The front page of the local paper today has a great picture, & an article about the "Bear problem" around here lately.

Here is a picture from a recent race (8 hour solo, on my rigid singlespeed). That nice weather went ugly with about 2.5 hour to go. We finished in torential rains with mud up to our eye balls. Not pretty.

JOSH - I've been waiting for the results of the Big Bear Ultra. You did it go? <need more Java : )

Did you see that 6 foot rounded off triangular rock? That ones fun to fly off of. It feels like you are 6ft in the air but really only about 2ft up.

I did go, I sucked really bad. Alot of people did not finish. At least I finished and enjoyed the singletrack. It took me nearly 7 hours. A century ride on a road bike is alot easier than 50 miles at Big Bear. Heck my 50 mile rides in Park City were much easier than 50 miles at Big Bear. Big Bear does indeed rock I am going back there to ride for a weekend before winter.

I dont remember that rock but there were lots of fun rocks and bridges and such there. the course was the second most technical trail I have ridden after only the Davis race loop. I had fun here though despite being totally out of energy then I did at Davis. Its funny at Davis I did much better but I hated the trail. he I sucked but thought the trail was awesome.

No racing for me except crits till the 24 hours of springs. I will be down for the rattlesnake though hopefully better prepared. If I finished in 5:30 at the revenge I would be happy.

I rode about 10-12 miles off road last eve. I am having trouble with what I call neuro-muscular re-education. I tried to hop a mud puddle and it was delayed. I hit it with the front wheel and then cleared the rest of the puddle. I wheelied overa 8 inch log sitting about another 6 inches off the ground. I pulled up so hard I almost flipped over backward. My brain and biceps aren't quite in sync yet.

I had to promise Ms. Zoo, no racing this year. I was holding out for a possible 24 hours of 7 Springs. It would be hard to get a decent team together at this point, and well the thought of simultaneous spasms, in both hams and quads doesn't sound appealing. I'm not in '24 hours shape' due to my left arm being immobilzed for 6 weeks. I would still try it. Weber keeps giving me funny looks every time I suggest it. Maybe I'm just dense?

The Rattlesnake is pretty rough. I love the Plantation run. Very rough and rocky, hard to keep a consistent pace. The winner last year was on a 29er HiFi Pro.: )
Hard to say what the course will be? Last year they got special permission to run it through Dolly Sods. I don't think they can do it this year due to the Wilderness designation.

Laurel Mountian State Park

Laurel Mountain is 20-25 miles of flattish but very technical singletrack on top of a mountain. some loamy, ferny rocky singletrack goodness. Ill get back here for more pics but some good ones today. If you like technical singletrack riding this is a great place to ride.

^ I am dealing with that now. Lifetime warranty on Trek, so it should be replaced. I am just afraid it will take awhile. In the meantime I am relegated to the road bike. The problem is the MTB trails start getting good again this time of year!
