Not just another Mounting a Goat thread

Where shall I begin?

When I arrived at BZN airport, my skis did not arrive with me, so Rio generously offered me an opportunity to ski his daughters Gotamas. What a riot!! 

So......I checked around to see if I could get the ski closest to that Goat, which is the 08-09 Women's version Kiku.

With the Kiku in hand, I notice some subtle differences like the slightly different tail, and the feminine, yet not too girly, graphix.

Since its the womens version, I have other things to consider:

Will the Kiku mounting be similar to the Goat?  My gut says that she may need to be mounted slightly different due to the difference in the tail.  Which brings up another question, will the Kiku need fondling before being drilled?

We can chat about waxing preferences later.

TC, I've had good experience emailing Volkl through their US web site. They get back to you in a day, and with actual stuff like mm from tail to mounting point. This is good to know since the past few iterations of the Goat, at least, there's been discrepancies between marks on skis and factory recs. 

That said, two other things: 1) I've heard that the Kiku is simply a lighter cored Goat, no other real differences. Cannot speak to the tail. But if true, then the rear mark should be pretty close (within a cm) to a good compromise mount. If you go long, you might think about 1 cm forward. I doubt you'd want them behind the rear line unless they are just for deep powder.

But 2) If the Goats were a riot, why not get them in a 168 instead of the Kiku's? Easier to find around at a good price, and this season's may end up the last in a great sequence of traditional shapes. Vertical sidewalls and all. Of course, the graphics are an acquired taste. 

Mount them 1.125mm in front of the Goat. You've seen the 'Goat'... right?

Beyond, you are right on many accounts, but what fun would it be to actually go to the source, when I can get pleasant chatter among friends on where to mount a Goat, errrrrr, Kiku?

I thought about getting a used Goat in that year/build, but Ptex offered me a price I could not refuse on the Kiku, and it is supposed to be the closest to the goat I skied at BigSky.  Rio can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe its the 05-06 Goat.

So, ........... since Graphix are not as important to me as performance, price and availability was more of an incentive than anything else.

Hmmm... not shocked by the 'Goat'... I'm impressed. Well played indeed.

Trekchick used the 05-06 Gotamas which are a softer flex than the current Gotamas and a tad narrower in the tip and tail.  The Kiku has a softer flex than the current Gotamas and are suppose to be closer to the original Gotamas in flex. 

I bought my girlfriend a pair of 168 Kikus, also.  I've been measuring the 168cm Kikus verses the original 168cm Gotamas and found the mid-sole make on the Kiku is close to Gotamas if you line them up against each other.  On the other hand, if you measure where the running surface starts the mid-sole is about 2cm back.  I'll probably measure them again just to make sure this is correct.  As of now, my inclination is to mount the Kikus 1 cm forward which still puts them significantly behind where I normally have my girlfriend's skis mounted but these are going to be her deep powder skis so moving the mount backwards makes sense to me.

Most guys would recommend going with the strange tail. Eventually, the novelty wears off after a while; remount in a different position to spice things up.

Thank you Rio for the first hand knowledge from someone who has had both the goat and kiku in hand.

I ran this theory by MrTC who says he will not admit nor deny the validity of this statement on the grounds that TC may not be amused.

So........

What position did you finally decide on for the mounting and drilling?  And what about the strange tail? Did foreplay (fondling and caressing) occur prior to the mounting and drilling???

No, really, that was a real question since mine will be on the way on Friday

I think I'll be taking Rio's actual advice since he's extremely knowledgeable about the strange tail and mounting. He's an exceptional chef, too!!

For the record, I rode the goat in Montana.  I'll be mounting the one with the strange tail in Michigan.

I've been asking some of the locals about mountaining goats and the concensus seems to be you should bob their tails so they don't get in the way of mounting.

Well, Rio, I would guess that your locals would be knowledgeable about such things

I am not sure why I'm such a pussy about it...
