No! Unfortunately no!
I live in Rio de Janeiro, the low temps, in the midle of Winter, here are around 12Cº.

But I think Chile and Argentina already have snow.

Valle Nevado, Portillo and Las Lenas generally get similar weather patterns.

I've been checking their websites and snow-forecast.com, and I think they got at least 2 good storms in the last 2 weeks...

I think some good terrain is already open, and more snow is coming this week.

In the south (Bariloche/Chapelco) I'm sure they got some snow but not sure how much and how low the freezing level is...

Thiago,

Looks like Catedral are experiencing warmth  temps from now. Yesterday, they have got 20cm  at the summit "Punta Nevada". Please find below!

My thought is: the season will develop slowly, with best condition's time in late Aug or early Sept.

keep snow dancing!!!

Raining at lake level today around Bariloche. Forecast looks promising for snow over the next few days. Areas further north (Las Leñas, around Santiago, etc) are in better shape as of 4thof July. Vamos a ver!

Thanks edlam!

By the way, aren't you guys worried about the influenza A(H1N1) in Chile and Argentina?

Last week, government of Brazil alerted Brazilians to avoid traveling to Chile and Argentina this winter, unless its really necessary.

I know ski is "really necessary", but I certainly don't want to get this flu...

Yes, Chile is ranking 4th on the H1N1 country list. However, USA is ranking #1 on the list with over 12,000 cases. However, I cannot feel the danger on the open slope to attract that desease.

shoudl be pretty burned through by end of August. Wash hands regularly, eat properly and avoid sitting near little kids sneezing and coughing without covering mouth! Little germ factories...

That is good news!

But I think Alta Patagonia still needs a big dump.

Right now I'm really worried about the Influenza H1N1, I heard from some argentinians locals that the number of people infected is much higher than they are reporting...

Has anyone already been there this season?

I live in Bariloche year round and do not have the Swine Flu. Don't fall for the hype!

If you are that worried about the flu, read up on the vitamin D studies, or sell me your tickets real cheap.

Growing old is mandatory.  Growing up is optional.

Let's talk frankly!

That dsease is far from any hard concerned one. It's proved that it is equal or, perhaps, less danger than the normal flu.

BTW, as SoulSkier, a friend of mine form Bariloche told me about how normal the situations is from there and I really hope it not harmful the season and the business. Bariloche and the other SA ski places don't deserve it.

And, yes, he told me that the snow starts to fall hard!!!!!

Of course the number of cases is higher than reported.  It's that way everywhere.
Suppose I caught swine flue.  Unless I happen to drop dead from it, how the heck is anyone going to know?  I'm certainly not going to do a test for it on myself and report the results.  I'll just ignore it and get over it like most everybody else, or I suppose it's possible though highly unlikely that I would take a sick day (that has NEVER  happened) and get over it.

I'm heading off to Bariloche in two weeks and was wondering if those who have been there can help me plan. We're not planning to go backcountry, but wondered is there any "sidecountry" there where we might want to take off our skis and hike up?

Thanks.

Good question!

Unfortunately I'll can't help you in that matter.

SoulSkier may answer you.

But I think you'll probably find some terrain in Cerro Catedral to hike up.

If I can help you in other matters, feel free to ask!!!

I'm heading to Alta Patagonia (August 17) and I am getting worried about snow conditions.

Some good terrain is still closed in Catedral and Chapelco, and the snow cover on open slopes seems very thin...
No storms in the forecast...

But i'll keep my snow dance.

Yes, the conditions are not looking good, for sure...

I use this link to check the conditions up there:  http://www.bariloche.org/paginas/2007/03/50/camaras_en_vivo/

But I'm optmistic for the next month! The forecast will change soon!!!

Let's snow dance gang!!!!

Cheers~

Here in the states, they actually don't track and report on specific H1N1 cases, it's simply classified as "Flu A" infections, so the actual numbers like here in New Jersey were hugely undereported. For instance, the state report showed only a few confirmed cases meanwhile at one point there were over 100 students out of school sick in June  (not exaclty the tim eof year for flus, colds, etc)........ Now, do you think that was a coincidence?

We went to Valle Nevado today. There has not been snow within 3 days, most of the powder was skied off. In the morning, there was sunshine and the skiing is good but in the afternoon, it was cloudy and the light is flat and the wind start blowing.. cannot see any thing. we came back to the bus early.

for those who wish to sample ski chile here is a choice to go to different areas each day
