Which mountains should be in the best shape in terms of snow and trails open this Spring? Also, for this weekends which mountains do you all think will be good?

I don't know what will be best but I do know that Stowe has plenty of snow.

Sugarloaf or Wildcat, both should be good and generally have the longest spring seasons in the east.

Lots of trails and snow still at Killington, I was there this Tues and Wed and even natural snow trails had great coverage.

Planning a trip to Okemo next weekend - anyone have an update on conditions there?  Based on Snowbowler, I may spend a day at Killington instead....

I'll probably be at Killington at least 1 day this week (Tues), I'll post a report here about what is still open and how it is skiing. Hopefully  we don't get too much rain Sunday, early part of next week looks pretty good for spring skiing.

I was at Okemo today.  I wouldn't say they have trees-to-trees coverage any more.  There are definitely some rocks poking up through the snow, and the groomers are definitely mixing some dirt into the snow in places, but for the most part, I didn't worry too much about hitting stuff.  I wouldn't be taking skis with pristine bases though.

Kevin I'll have you know your favorite bump runs were in great shape yesterday. Starr headwall was good all the way across. National is deep. Upper Goat is toast but you can still ski it to the bottom. Didn't try Lookout but I suspect dirt hopping is required.

Thanks for the update.  I was at Mt. Snow on Friday and skied bumps there all day.  The bumps are thin in a few spots, but mostly you could just ski 'em without worry.  I'll have to make a return trip to Stowe shortly...  I haven't been there in a while now.  Good to hear the coverage is still deep.

This whole next week looks like a large does of rain passing through the Northeast.  It is possible that some of this could be snow in the mountain areas.

Looks like Stowe and Sugarloaf areas could get some snow...but will it be enough?  I am looking to get at least onemore weekend in, not sure how far north I will have to go.  Right now candidates are Stowe, Sugarloaf, Wildcat, and Sunday River.

At least in the case of Sugarbush, it will be primarily rain.  Any snow will be marginal and/or mixed with rain.

Sugarloaf, as of last Wednesday when I was there, looked like mid-winter. Probably a 3' to 4' snow pack. And HARD. We should be able to ski into it for weeks depending on the rain situation. Even skied the back snowfields. The top was soft with big bumps, but as you traversed around the cone, it was more stumps and crust than snow. I figure it was a $40 run (cost of tune). Crazy good deals at the Loaf as well and mgmt is not afraid to stay open - probably for bragging rights. I skied the last weekend last year - like May 3-4. Was 70 degrees and some fine pond skimmin'.

Skied Sugarbush Friday and yesterday and there was some great bump skiing. Ripcord and Paradise were in great condition BUT it was raining this morning so we came home. It was very (too) warm the last few days. A lot of snow loss even though we still had some good tree skiing. It's going to be an early season...........It feels more like the end of April rather than the end of march

Oh man..... I'm committed to going to Stowe skiing Monday and Tuesday (week of Apr-06th). Never been but figured since the mountain is pretty high it will fair better then others....maybe not. Keeping my fingers crossed.....

I'm hoping at least upper nosedive will be open as I'm not a bump skiier (yet)

We'll probably lose some terrain, but the snowmaking trails are deeeeep. The snowmaking hydrants are about 6' tall and they are still completely buried.

As promised here is a report of the conditions at Killington, I skied there today, was very surprised as I was heading up access road and saw the trails 1st thing in the morning and they where all white. I expected after rain on Sunday and Monday that there would be lots of brown spots but there wasn't.They got 3-5" on Monday when in the valley  we got rain.

All the trails in the canyon area had excellent coverage, couldn't find many spots with rock or grass at all. Skye peak also same, over on Bear I only skied Outer Limits and very good coverage, 50/50 groomed  /bumped, as got closer to the side of trail rocks were showing, but lots of good bump lines to be had. Best trails for today for me where Escapade and Downdraft, Double dipper was great. No woods were technically open  but coverage is decent, be prepared to get around things though. They are grooming cruiser runs every night from what I have seen last week and today, although with temps staying warm for this week I'm not sure how mauch they can do every night. Seems like forcast is for some rain come Friday and maybe Sat.

I skied yesterday at Attitash in a last-ditch effort to get to 30 days on the year.

I skied from around 10-2, due to a late start in the morning as I was day-tripping it.  They still have a pretty decent base, although if it rains one or two more times I would start to be concerned.  It was firm in the morning, but softened up a bit and was best from around 10:30-12:00.  Once the sun broke for good and it warmed up, it turned into a slush fest.  I didn't see much grass or rocks, except on the mogul runs, but it definitely got nice and slow.  Their last day is Sunday, but likely as a cost measure more than just lack of ski-able terrain.

I'm excited with the base depth they still have, as it makes the prospects for my trip further north to Jay this weekend much more promising :)  Cross your fingers for a 5-10 degree temp drop so we can get the good kind of precip!

I wonder why no one has recommended Mont Ste Anne.  It's usually the best late season choice.

I just checked it and today it was running 66/66 trails. Is there anywhere else at 100%?

suggestions? quit being such a block head and go skiing.

Rain PFT!!! who the hell cares? makes the snow soft and fast, bump skiing in the rain is really fun.

Goretex shell(with a hood to cover your helmet), goretex pants and some extra gloves/ sock and you should be good to go.

I cant believe people are complaining about skiing in the rain. I can think of so many numerous things that are way worse than that and at least you have a chance to have fun sking in the rain. in fact this just popped in my mind.

whether you think your going to have fun, or you think you wont, whatever you think is true.

"its not that you cant ski the bumps, its that you cant ski and the bumps prove it"

pbfootnit.blogspot.com/ <<< the start of something good!

ok well, appreciate any of these posts with conditions in the East.

I am looking to get a few more days in, especially at Loon or Sunday River as I have passes left.

I am hearing there is a great base at many of the mountains, question is whether the coming weekend rain might eat into some of that more than is usual for this time of year.

Thanks all for sharing info.

Hey Bushwack,

Good point - I have skied more times than not in the rain.  I am more concerned with the trail coverage and whether I need my "rock" skis.

You don't need rock skis yet. Not even close.

Update on Killington,

I was at Killington today and had a great day.  We were expecting rain showers, but it ended up snowing the entire day.  The bad part was that it was very windy (30 - 50 mph gust) and blustery.  However the trails were in reasonably good shape - they needed some of the new snow today.  The mogul fields were soft and alot of fun (although they kicked my butt on a couple of runs).

I am heading over to Okemo tomorrow to meet freinds - heard that the conditions were not so great there (rain).  But I am enjoying my last ski trip of the season...

It'll still be better than not skiing.

Had a pretty sweet day at Jay today.  They got 6-8" up top, which is weird since it was sunny and bare grass 15 minutes away.  Turned to mist as the day went on, but still just what the Dr. ordered for this time of year.

Same thing here. Shin deep snow at the top of the mountain nothing in town.
