Annual bitch about the weather thread

57* right now and going up to past 60* and sunny.....yes it feels nice here at home....but last night at Killington it was a balmy 42*.  For those of us that do not like Spring conditions the days left are few it should seem.  I thought we would be freezing cold into April.  To think, only 5 days ago we were 12" deep in snow...now I'm in a t-shirt.

Could not have said it better myself!    Just had an awesome day of skiing slush bumps at Okemo.  It must have hit 50 degrees; I was skiing in a t-shirt and my baseball hat.  I love spring conditions!

Tommorow it's gonna be -25C with windchill over here. That's approximately -13 F.

With the arrival of mashed potatoes on the mountain, can the green beer be far behind?

Glad you made some progress this year in your skiing. Sorry you  don't like spring snow yet.

I actually skied with the guy unrefined no but he genarally he skis on a edge, that alone will get you though slush.

Be able to ski the terrain is one thing thoroughly enjoying it is another.   Sure I can make it through the slush and crud, but I still prefer some nice COLD, firm, groomed, snow.

OK, so let me bitch a little. Last night we had pouring rain here in Toronto. Up north they expected 10-15 cm of snow. I was soooo excited, until I got there. There was maybe 1 cm of snow on a completely frozen hardpack. Basically the conditions I hate the most. Absolutely nothing is more frustrating then skiing on what feels like concrete. I might as well take my skis and scrape them against the sidewalk.

This has been one hell of a frustrating year. We had many warming trends followed by deep freezes that left the slopes rock hard. We lost our bumps 4 times so far (they re-groom them once they become rock hard and unskiable, unless it is spring). By the time spring arrives there will be nothing left and they will close the freakin' hill. Man would I love some spring corn and nice weather for a change!

At least I have my mountain bike race season to look forward to because the skiing sucks. Other than having 48 days on snow so far, I have nothing to cheer about this year. OK, I feel better now.

Snowing here.  At sea level.  Dumped in the mountains last weekend.  I got no complaints.

Hmm.  Spring?    0 degrees this morning at Mount rose summit on my way to the airport.  Coldest I have seen all winter.  And 4 ft + of snow last week.......

Spring skiing is the reward for toughing it out all season.

My experience in Utah in early-mid April is typically freshies in the morning, mashed potatoes in the afternoon, or corn all day with bright sun and cold beer. Is there much better? In Whistler, May can bring you fresh, corn, mashed, ice or whatever sometimes all in one run. If you want to find out how to ski (a lot) better, do the spring thing.

Another benefit is that the "I only do perfect groomer" gapers are all home thinking about their gnar golf game, or waxing their cars. What could be better - uncrowded slopes and great snow.

The only thing wrong with spring skiing is knowing that the end of the season is getting close.

 16" in the last 24 hours here, and still dumping all through next week! Heading up today.

I'm going to Hunter this week.

Anyone know what kind of wax I shoud use for grass, mud, and exposed rock (the rock is limestone slate and sandstone)?

You might be better off bolting some off-road tires to your skis.
 

i personally blame the ground hog.  he said it was gonna be a late spring.  do you think he does drugs???

Rock Ski Wax

Lots of rain over the past several days, but the little joint at the lowest elevation around is still 100% open today where the larger higher up places are flailing and melting away.  I'm planning to take my son Saturday and put him in half day Ski Wee while I play in the hero bumps.  Then, after his lesson, I will take a few runs with my son on the greens.  This will be the first time we actually ski together other than the time I toted him between my legs last season.  He had Ski Wee last month and they said he was somewhat able to link some turns with tip ties.  I'm sure this time he should do well.  He is really excited about getting to go one more time this season.   I can't think of a better way to end the season.

The bold needs to change.  Spring skiing is awesome!  You can learn a lot in spring skiing.  If you wan't to get faster in a race course also, you need to ski soft wet snow and feel how subtle weight shift makes a difference.  If it's packed soft snow - like before it gets skied up, you can feel how going hard on your edges is sloow.  On firm snow that is very hard to actually feel.

Oh, I'll gladly take those Im88's!! I was doing leg burning high speed runs today on that wimpy SS Magnum -71 underfoot and short.  Awesome time! though there are moments when you're doing it that it seems totally insane.  Really could use those 88's now...or even something fatter. I must say going switch in the stuff without a back tip is a little worrisome!

Besides, it's going to be cold Friday night and Saturday will probably be firm!!

Just because it's warm in freakin' Nyc doesn't mean the season is over.  Last year it snowed feet in April and closing day was incredible.  Oh, but it was warm and spring like.  See what you're missing by not engaging it?  Richie - see this is the time to invite the girls to go skiing!! Because they can just hang out in swimsuits if they can't handle the snow.  Really, it can be a great party.  As for Hunter - sheesh if it's crowded and sping like on the trail count me out.

Amazingly for a weekday, it is somewhat crowded here.  That's due to the Canadians coming down for spring break.  That's all relative though and the bumps are not at all crowded.  Afternoons are way less crowded as the soft snow tends to keep those "who don't like it" - Richie!!!!- away.

TomB, there are many Canadians from the Toronto area here in VT this week due to school breaks.  They drove 8-10 hours to come and they are having an incredible time so far. I must say they are determined to!  There outside in the afternoon in sun and partying.  The snow has been amazing spring conditions. 

That should last without the sun through thursday, possibly with some liquid stuff tommorrow. 

What drives me nuts is here in SW Pa. we tranistion immediately in the early spring from winter to almost summer like weather for two weeks, lose a ton of base and then the weather tranistions back to being cold after the snow is all gone! Never a gradual seasonal tranistion anymore.

Having a cold April after the hill closes is horrible. Also ruins what you would hope would be decent golf weather. I guess things could be a lot worse.
