Of the places I have skied Mt. Rose and Sierra-at-Tahoe are probably the ones with the least attitude.

Lack of "tude" at Stowe? Really? I think Stowe is a great mountian and I love skiing there when I can.

BUT there is a HIGH level of atitude there. JMO.

Heard good things about Killington, Stratton, PCMR...

But I seriously have heard good things about MRG, but never been.

Great post. Obnoxious attitude while skiing/riding really pisses me off. If you can't have a good time out on the mountain without cutting someone else down because they fell or without being a complete dick for no reason then you should probably find a new hobby that's more entertaining on its own. Period. Don't dick up the mountain for those of us that just want to chill and have a good time.

That being said, I think I've had the best luck at smaller, more serious resorts. Places like Jay Peak, Snowbasin and Powder Mountain have all been good to me. I think if you get less of an influx of drunken tourists and teenagers with something to prove, you're bound to get less tude.

Agreed, though there's also local 'tude to be considered. For example, as much as I loved Jackson Hole, the Bro 'tude is considerable there. There's a bit of a More Core Than Thou 'tude at Alta, another place I nonetheless love.

On the other hand, a mountain that doesn't have at least a little 'tude lacks flavor, as if locals don't ski there and it's just for tourists.

I'd second Kirkwood and Mt. Rose, Whistler is surprisingly mellow despite the huge numbers of people.

I don't really dig the "so core" or the "I'm too cool to speak with you" kind of vibe, and some places feel like that.

The best vibe has to be some of the out-of-the-way places (think on the other side of the world from California) where the equipment is basic and secondhand, the people only able to afford a few days a year on the slopes, and the atmosphere is pure fun.

Once you get pass the very few people who still think that snowboarders ruin the mountain, Taos is a really cool place to ski. Most of the locals are really nice, and the vibe at the mountain is pretty relaxed.

I'd have to say - Utah: Powmow by far

Vermont: Magic or Bolton Valley

NH: Ragged

Tahoe: Alpine Meadows

Meh - the whole snowboard debate and nasty tone last year made Taos a candidate for the "tude" king IMO. Likewise Alta and anyplace else banning boards. I've enjoyed skiing at Alta. And I'd go back in a heartbeat. But it is hard to argue no "'tude" when not  ten minutes after watching a bunch of aggro locals literally elbow several people off the traverse (two traverses actually) I rode a lift with an old Alta vet who spent the entire ride lauding the place for keeping the "obnoxious" snowboarders out and having such a great "skiers'" vibe. Talk about a synthetic and marketing dept created "vibe"...

Anyplace still banning snowboards has plenty of 'tude. Not saying the skiing is bad or that there's no fun to be had. Just that in any rational scheme of things, any of the "no boarders" places should be automatically disqualified from this thread. And Taos too since they only grudgingly folded on the issue because they were gonna go bust otherwise - and the comments emanating from the place were obnoxious as hell during the process.

I remember the debate here and how it got pretty nasty. I also talked with quite a lot of people on the mountain last year before they lifted the ban and there were still quite a few who were pissed and who said the mountain was going to change for the worse.

But this season I really can count with one hand how many people have said something negative about the snowboarders presence on the mountain. Maybe all those pissed-off guys go to Alta now instead.

And the mountain hasn't changed a bit IMO. It's still steep, there are still big bumps, and you don't find many snowboarders "ruining the snow" as many of those detractors said they would. Heck, we have no snow now so there's nothing to be ruined!

Killington, Stratton, PCMR...

Probably about the worst 'tude on the Least Coast. Stratton in particular, has got to be about the worst anywhere. Cheesy flat hill littered with "double blacks" that the kids and I have skied switch (on NON twin tips), gapers everywhere with Bogner, Spyder etc, posing at the top of the gondola entrance with OF COURSE, the obligatory Volkls ("everyone KNOWS they're the best").

JAPs parading everywhere in the ultra-cheesy "village" in their new furs, looking like refugees from reality or (at least) good taste..

Stratton is the epitome of 'tude, with the REALLY sad part being that it has absolutely no reason to cop one. It's probably the NY/NJ crowd that they've pursued with the real estate being so obnoxious (how are you guys doing now ), but it has to be the place I avoid most within driving distance.

Some years ago when my kids would agree to go there when I got free tickets, some Mountain Ambassador yahoo was psyhing the gondola with chants about the best area in south VT - my 9 year-old at the time screamed MAGIC - I was one proud Dad.

K-Mart, well, the number of pimply faced retards has thankfully diminished somewhat in the last couple of years, but still - calling itself the Beast of the East just shows how out of whack it is with reality. There's someone who'll no doubt challenge you to a ski-off that visits here on occasion if you say anything derogatory about K-Mart

PMCR - Deer Valley is Stratton West (no compliment intended) and yes, I know all about Empire Canyon etc.

Lack of 'tude -

Least Coast - Magic (don't go there, it sucks ) SB, MRG (I don't go beyond that, as it takes less time to go west)

CO - A-Basin

UT - Solitude, Snowbasin, PowMow

S/N - Squaw

Agree, Taos is a very mellow place for an expert oriented resort.

Most are over the snowboard thing. And while I agree that boarders should be allowed anywhere, the bumps at Taos sure were nice before they got there.

I either missed an earlier response (which is possible), or I'm the only person who believes it all depends on what the OP means by "annoying 'tude."

I can think of a numerous 'tudes, many not only different but flat-out inconsistent with one another, that are annoying to different people (including, for some people, the one associated with the use of the word "'tude").

Or does everyone else simply believe, "That which is annoying to me is, by definition, 'annoying,' while that which is annoying to other people is simply evidence of those other people's hypersensitivity and overall un-coolness"?

I've backed off from bashing the snowboarders since it has been a lost cause.  I am just curious as to why they insist on lying on the hill next to each other with sometimes a half dozen boarders.  I can't count how many times I have sped down a narrow trail only to come around a bend and find them blocking 2/3 of the trail.  Did they not ever learn the etiquete that suggests moving to the edge while taking a break??

But back to the topic, on the east coast, Wildcat seems to attract the least amount of jerks.

I remember in Colorado, since the responsibility code was state law, it was featured prominently on leaflets and signs, is it similar to the FIS code?

I do see the same kind of thing on the West Coast but more of an afterthought.  It would be in everyones best interest for boarders and skiers to avoid creating pile-ups in the middle of trails

'Tude?

I'm not sure if I've ever really encountered this while actually on the mountain, other than one or two incidents which I'm sure happen everywhere.

The worst thing I've found is mountain locals not wanting to socialize with out-of-towners.  Has anyone else noticed this?  I find fellow visitors to be friendly, but at some mountains there seems to be a code among locals not to mix with the "tourists".  Maybe it's just my experience.  (of course this doesn't apply to "local" Bears ;) )  Also, I find it much worse in the West where you have more of a ski bum culture.

Talking from a lack of 'tude perspective, Lake Placid stands out in my mind as a visitor friendly place.

Yup, SB = Sugarbush

K2? No, the proleteriat can get discounts on those - they're so Mt Snow common. Volkl's are the only ski to pose with (OK, Stockli's too), because they're expensive and only the BEST is allowed on Flatton's uber-gnar "terrain".
