Correct Length Volkl AC50's

Hi everyone,

I'm an expert level skier 26 yo 6'1" 195 lbs and I recently bought some Volkl AC50's.  I went to the shop with the intent of getting some 184 cm skis but the sales-people talked me down to 177's.  I'm used to skiing 184's but they are nearly 10 yrs old (1st gen shaped) ~72 mm waist.  Did I make the right call or should I have gone longer?  I usually ski about 60% off-piste 40% on.

IMO you could have gone for either but except for deep stuff (which the AC50 isn't to good for anyway) you should be fine with the 177.

You got the right size in my opinion. Thats alot of ski.

Sounds good to me, but I ski NC, so what would I know about deep.  Does deep refer to how thick the ice is?

For your skill level you should be ok. I have been on a 170cm ski for about 6 years. I'm 190lbs 5'11"

 

Where do you ski ?

Just got back from trying out the skis at Whistler.  I though I might overpower them but that wasn't the case at all.  Hardpack conditions with no new snow for over a week.  The 177's handled me no problem but I think I would have been able to control a 184 also.  The 177's did really help in the hard bumps.  Can't wait to see what they can do in soft snow.

I saw that you used your Volkl AC50's at Whistler last season.  Your review only talked about hardpack conditions.  How did you like the ski the rest of the season?  Where else did you ski?  I'm in the Vancouver area and like to ski Blackcomb / Cypress / Baker and also Sun Peaks.  I'm close to your size at 6'0" and 220lbs.  I'm looking for new skis this year!!!  My OLD K2 Gyrators (184) are done.  Good ski for many years, but time to upgrade.  I would call myself an advanced skier and like to ski the black and blue runs.  I enjoy moderately sized bumps, skiing through some trees and crud.  The snow is usually pretty decent, but can be somewhat heavy at the local mountains.  I'm researching skis and I'm leaning to the AC30 or AC50.  I'd love to hear what you thought of the AC50 in other conditions at Whistler.

Any other suggestions???

Sounds like we are of similar ability. I use to ski Volkl equipment and really liked my AC40's. If I was looking at that brand, the AC50 would be a good call I am sure, but they are expensive. For the price, I like Dynastar better. I have Mythic Riders that are a great ski in that AC50 mold for a lot less. If you ski Whistler, I would get the Legend Pro, as I am thinking Whistler has unlimited off piste potential and for that I want a wider waisted ski that can still rail a groomer back to the lifts.
