TR: Breckenridge 2-05 thru 2-09

Breck sucks.

What more is there to say really?

From the overpriced lift tickets like all CO resorts, to the jackass snowboarders that litter the mountain.

The runs are long/flat and groomed, and it didn't snow for any of the time except the day we left.

Oh joy to Colorado...

Back to UT for now on for family trips, lower elevation, better snow and less expensive. 

Breck doesn't live up to the hype unfortunately..I guess I am the problem of course.

Bummer, you caught it on a weekend after a few days without snow (prior snow day was Feb 2)  It started snowing again on Monday, 09.  No lines.  The weekends are definately busy.  Monday -Thursday have been quiet.

 HAHA, the two times I went to Breck we had the great fortune of being guided by some bears who knew the lay of the land and we were greeted with fresh snow.  

I loved Breck!

Oh, disclaimer, I am not bashing snowboarders, I grew up skating/surfing, used to do some snowboarding, but went back to skiing.  I don't have any issue with sensible non-asswipes who ride boards.  But there was just so many with attitudes and causing issues for no reason but to be deucebags.  Must be a Breck thing.  It is really great having your kids exposed to that kind of ass-hattery.  You all should be proud.

There is just something about the mass amount of beginners and snowboarders that really make that place nothing special for me personally.

Enjoy you little town and mountain...I won't be back ever.

 You must not have skied the T-Bar, or chair 6, or the E chair, or Imperial, or even Peak 10 for that matter.  Hell, there is even terrain off the RM Superchair that doesn't fit that description.  Try skiing the whole mountain before you start bitching about it.

Breck has become so polarizing among both locals and tourists. Sure it's not all steeps and its caught between being a ski town and a resort town, but if you can't have a good time at Breck, then you're just not enjoying skiing.

You hate Breckenridge and you find it’s important to share your bad vibe with us all?  Job well done!  Your reputation is now firmly established here.  UT is looking forward to your visit and critique with great anticipation  

Thank goodness you didn’t take the opportunity to post up a ‘call out’ for Uncle Louie or the many number of local summit bears willing to give you an insider’s guide on Breckenridge.  Besides, working to share positive experiences amongst the bears on this forum is waaaay overrated

First, I didn't even waste time explaining the two incidents with the two different snowboarders myself and my buddy/son had.

But if you want to hear, here is goes.

Wives are standing on the 4 o'clock off to the side waiting for some of us to get back to the condo.  Two 4 yr olds and a 9yr old girl are sitting in the snow by them minding their own business when a snowboarder comes straight at them and does a last split second turn spraying them and scaring the shit out of the woman. 

This isn't not only stupid, but dangerous.  Unfortunately, I arrived about 1 minute later to hear this and didn't witness it. 

Next incident, buddy/son are just cruising down to the bottom of 9 about 2 feet apart from one another, when a snowboarder comes blasting right between them brushing both of their shoulders.

My buddy takes off after him and stops him/confronts him and gives an earful.  Snowboarder then starts to take off and yells "This is my hill!!"  LOL..what a stupid ass.

I've never encountered such asswipes on boards, Breck has more than their share of them.

Yes, I will enjoy Utah...never had problems out there, and all the resorts shame Breck, just a fact, you can deal with my opinion anyway you want and continue to post whore it up.

You've got a point. But, why trash the Resort as a whole because you happened to be there when the conditions were not suitable to your likings?

The flip side of that scenario is being at the worst Resort and having a bluebird day with 2 feet of fresh powder and no lift lines. Would Breck suck if this were the case?

You just hit it at thee wrong time. I've been to Summit County many times when the entire week was cloudy and cold with no fresh snow only to have the locals tell you it snowed a foot everyday for the previous week. Then, have it dump a foot of fresh the day you leave for the airport.

Rose colored glasses? No!

Reality? Well, shit happens! But Breckenridge is a fine Ski area. Maybe if you give it another chance, you'll see why.

Just to add something. I used to think the same thing years ago. And, much the same had bad experiences therre when my kids were little. But after skiing there more often and getting to know my way around the mountain, knowing what and where to avoid, it is now a favorite of mine. It's not my most favorite but even on a crowded day I know places there to ski where i'm mostly alone with few people around. There are ignorant snowboarders everywhere. That's a fact. But no more so at Breck than ail or Snowbird or Killington etc.

Everything your wrote above is true. 

The time you came was the worst conditions we've had all year.  Like I said, I didn't even bother going up.  When we have a 50 degree day, followed by a multi-day moist southerly storm which basically only gives us clouds and wind, our mountain is not going to be good.  Every mountain on the planet has a scenario where the snow gets bad.  I'd argue that because of our high altitude and because we tend to get smaller snows more often, our mountain gets bad like this far less than other mountains.

As soon as the weather changes and it snows 6" or so, conditions are perfect again.  Like I said dude, sorry about your luck.
 

"truth hurts" has nothing to do with it.  You hit breck in a bad weather stretch and promoted to the world our mountain "sucks" because of it.  I've been to Silverton and skied the exact same conditions when back home at Breck a northerly storm dropped a foot on Breck both days while we skied wind-blown hard pack at SM.  Does that mean Silverton sucks?  Not remotely.  We still had a great time.  Other times, I've been to SM we skied 18" of untracked on every line.

Yes, both of those incidents suck.  4 O'Clock at the end of the day is dangerous because the entire mountain is emptying to town on what is basically an access road. (Notice the name of the run?)  Considering the conditions, it was probably a frustating day for everyone and that moved an abnormally high number of people to the groomers, which weren't hardpack thanks to the grooming you complained about earlier. 

I can't relate.  I don't ski groomers.  If the good stuff isn't worth skiing, I ski nordic or backcountry.  Or, those days sound perfect for hiking laps on Lake Chutes.  They're so high and east facing that they don't melt/harden.  The wind creates a firm windpack underneath and also blows in some fresh on top.  Perfect as long as you can see.

Enjoy Utah!  I go there too. Whether "all the resorts shame Breck" is debatable but as long as it works for you that's all that matters.  We're going to be OK here without you.

One more thing...

You asked if all TRs have to be positive? 

These guys were skiing the same time you were.  They were probably just as disappointed with the conditions as you (Devil's Crotch looks terrible).  But they managed to have fun and post an interesting TR as well.  I din't think comparing Breck's conditions to Vermont is all that complimentary but I like it because I had no idea what skiing in Vermont was generally like.  Now I sorta know.

I was teaching Level 8 & 9 that Fri-Sun.

your post is interesting to me for these reasons:

Wind blowing - We used the conditions to explore Breck. Specifically, the wind must have blown the snow somewhere.  We found some pretty good snow in the north facing concave features on the mountain.  Everyone was quite amused to have me lead them to the good snow.

Peak 10 - Crystal and Centennial (known as Zamboni Ridge by the locals).  We used that to develop technique with how to ski hard snow.  The hard snow on the rollovers would reward solid technique and punish poor technique.  My group handled it well, as keeping our feet underneath our body and creating edge without much displacement was the focus of lesson.  Then we entered the upper Burn to find some very good NORTH FACING, WIND PROTECTED snow. 

I say that to say, I am sorry to you didn't find the mountain to your liking.  Breck had snow on Jan 28th, and the next snow fall on the day you left Feb 9.  Part of the deal.  You and your family were skiing on 4 O'clock.  That is another mistake.  Other common ones are skiing any runs which run underneath a lift.  That goes for pretty much ANY area.

Runs which remainded good during your stay were plentiful, albeit not where everyone else was skiing.  I don't want to make it a local vs tourist thing, but developing a more "local" feel for the place would have served you well.

Here was the skiing just prior to your arrival.  Breck did not suck, nor was it flat nor icy.

I will agree with you. That weekend was very busy. 4 o'clock run with riders going the terrain park merging with slow zone skiers is zoo.  And lift ticket prices are ridiculous, but your "Breck sucks" comment is pretty much a joke too.

I was skiing with Jonathan on Saturday.  Yes it was firm.  But we found plenty of firm winter snow, and I thought it was quite grippy.  I wouldn't even call it hardpack.  It certainly wasn't icy.  I had great fun skiing high on the mountain with my cheater GS skis, and the groomers were great fun as well.

Sorry the conditions weren't what you expected.  But that's skiing.  I don't say Alta sucks because I skied it last year with frozen ice cookies -- you've got to take the conditions you're dealt and deal with them.

I agree with two points of your original post.  CO has some overpriced lift tickets and Utah has lower elevation.  Visited Summit County with my son for a week last winter, skied 5 days at Breck, A Basin, Keystone, Vail & Loveland.  While there, we got approx 3-6 inches of fresh snow just about everyday.  We love CO and that was the best ski trip we can recall.  Yes, fresh snow can really help to make a trip special.

I was just in Park City, UT skiing the day after Superbowl and there was no new snow before or while we were there (4 days of skiing) and the conditions were almost spring like.  Plus, while skiing for a day at Deer Valley (yes, skiers only), I was waiting on the side of a blue run for a buddy, approx 25 yards wide.  A speeding skier makes a close turn just to the outside of me and hits my uphill ski pole with his inside ski pole.  Then his buddy comes racing down and turns just on the inside of me, spraying me and actually hits the tails of my skis!  Believe me, jackasses come in all shapes and sizes, not just in the form of snowboarders.  Despite all of this my buddies and I still had a great time.  Hopefully, you will have a better ski season ahead.
