Features I Miss

Rating: 1

*Signature/tagline.   My little skiing guy is gone after 5 years of skiing next to my name.  It's been so long I don't remember where he was 'housed' so I can't get him back.   Sniff, sniff.

Avatars are nice, but they're too small to actually see unless you get into the profile.

* I can't put anyone on 'ignore' anymore.   That was a really handy feature.

* I didn't see a place to find out who is online, or if we are on or offline while we are here.   It used to be you could be invisible, or not, while you were cruising Epic.

Find all threads started by....

I'd like to add to a thread I started a year ago.  How do I find it?  I tried searching the name of the thread but I get one thousand responses, ten to a page.  It's not in the top one hundred and perusing further pages (ten to a page?!) is taking a lot of time as I'm not on a very fast connection at the moment.

I miss a New Posts button which can be seen from my profile

I miss the blue background more and more the longer I am here

Or not even being tagged as "edited".  We are going way back now to the way it was long ago where any change at all got the post tagged as edited.  This along with no preview is bad.  There's no reason to have "edit" slapped on for correcting things quickly.

I miss quoting people and not having to think about or deal with the [quote whatshisname... nonsense that now shows up in my reply box

Not sure what this means yet...

In general, the thing I miss most is the text density and font size of the previous site.  It was clear, readable and friendly.  The current isn't " bad" but there's waaay too much white space.  It feels like people's words are no longer as important. Oh right, we've got wiki's...  Why not both? Right, I forget...they're wiki's, who needs words?...

Another note - it's exceptionally annoying in the editor to have to click on the smiley then have the smiley choice page load before you can even pick one.  To make it even worse, you only get one smiley choice then the window goes away and you have to start the whole process again! - see that took forever just to put in those four.

Expression is being stifled here!!

changed one letter....got tagged

Most of the things mentioned so far, are things I also miss, and have been in the request (how do you spell Q without a spell checker), lineup for a few days.  I know they are coming, and share your frustration.  Imagine the tools I have lost as an admin/moderator.  I can't merge or move posts, but can move threads.  I can't retitle wikis.  I can 't see who's online or what the are doing.  I don't know who the most recent person to register is. I don't know when anyone has a birthday.

Being invisible is only useful when someone can see you're online.  I used to see you invisible or not, but I see no one anymore.  Lots of stuff doesn't work like it did before, but the people who programmed this are comitted to getting it right (even if I can 't spell it anymore).  They are going to stay on the job until it sings, and then when its finally right, they get their payoff....a viable alternative to V-Bulletin that has more functionality.  Its tough to be the first.  It really is. If we stick together through this, it will be a better place on the whole, but the growing pains will hurt a bit, at least for a few days.  I spent the day away from the forums at Kirkwood, and that worked pretty good for me.

That's how we got here. We couldn't do that without changing platforms. Please believe me on this... I spent untold hours trying to find an add-on to vBulletin that would actually work to do that without us having to hire a real programmer for thousands to get it done. I never could.

And, just so you know, I do technology for a living, so I actually have the chops to do this with open source, closed source, or custom... Just couldn't make it work.

And wiki wasn't the only thing that people wanted.

Given all that is on this platform that we have yet to even begin to explore, I think that the missing functions on the forums will be a relatively small part of what the site can become.

...And I suspect most will be added/changed relatively soon.

I concur with all these sentiments.  I do see how Huddler is a much stronger platform in the long run, but in the short run it's an incredibly weak forum system.  I'd love to hear that the Huddler team is listening and making it job #1 to get the forum features up to par as quickly as possible.

Right now I just feel lost without a lot of those vBulletin features.  I can't do forum "things" nearly as efficiently and some things are now altogether impossible.  Bummer.

I know their is a laundry list being made up & to be worked on quickly.  Thank you for that.  Like others I miss -

Seeing who's online.  And the little green online dot next to their name in all their posts when I'm reading a thread.  Without some type of indication of who's around online, it feels a bit lonely and impersonal.  Just a lot of threads.  Which seem a bit empty with out the friendly green dot next to a name.

I just don't understand why this was rolled out to replace an operational and functional system.  Even if the old setup had limitations going forward, it was operational and people were using it in the present.  From what I have seen, we have taken a major step backward in usability and admin on the forums in order to accomodate some new and forthcoming features.  It doesn't make sense to me at all.  I would not have rolled this out until the new forum software was on par or better than vB.

I agree.   There are clearly a LOT of problems here!  Can we PLEASE have the old site back until they're all fixed?  Who was responsible for testing this?  I find it REALLY HARD TO BELIEVE that all of these issues were not noticed before the launch...?

Two more things...

I miss being able to insert multiple smilies without having to open a new window to do it.

I miss multi-quoting.  Kyle had the same response to this post as I did, but I could not include it in my reply.

Where's the "my subscribed threads" link?

It seems to me that this "improvement" is a giant step backwards - many many features of the old forum are just gone.  Too bad.  Add another vote to the huge of "put it back to what it was" pile.

When you go to your Home page after the initial sign in, there should be a "Stuff You're Interested In", which shows your first five (not nearly enough) subscriptions.  To see more of them, click on the More below it.  Unfortunately you have to do this each time.  I'd like the ability to define how many subscriptions I want there (at least 10 and ONLY if there are new posts since my last visit, not all the stuff I already looked at).

Also, a bit over to the right of that there is an Edit Subscriptions thing which will bring you to ALL of your subscriptions, unfortunately no longer sorted into folders.

There is also a place (My Profile??) which allows you to DEFAULT to a check mark in the box next to Subscribe when you are posting.  That makes things a ton easier.

If you are sick to death of a topic, you can go into the Edit Subscriptions and start clicking the X's next to each topic.

I completely agree with you.  We started working with the member advisory planning group just 3-weeks ago de-bugging a development beta forum.  Most of the issues members are complaining about were put on a list of things to do.  A number of things did get done before the launch, and in particular the New Posts button.   Not taking the company line here, the move was rushed, and I don't know the reasons behind that.  I would speculate that the last server move from dchan's to a commercial server failed to deliver any real improvements and resulted in a lot of costs.

Huddler is something of an "angel", pouring hundreds (if not more) of man-hours developing this platform for EpicSki, hosting the content and continuing to work to satisfy the requests.  What they get in return is a well established forum community that they need to get right, for their survival as well as our own.  I am confident that willl happen. There is a lot at stake for the EpicSki owners and partners.  FWIW, if the luxury of time existed, I'm sure it woujld have been taken.  I perceived a definite sense of urgency about the move.  Even though I  seriously miss the features we are talking about, they will be implemented and the site as it exists today is not so bad, and some parts are brilliant.  I see where this is going, and its definitely worth being a part of it.

I don't get the "sense of urgency" on EpicSki's part. I certainly do get it as to why it's urgent for Huddler to get a big-name (ok, semi-big) site instead of the couple of homegrown things they have now.

Bagging EpicSki gives them cred as to being a viable platform for major existing internet communities. Which might get the a shot at an additional round of funding. If there was any funding for startups in this economy.

But what's in it for EpicSki? Why so urgent? Unless this is part of a plan to monetize EpicSki.

Again, I wish both firms well, but I just don't see why EpicSki had to jump on this "product review" platform (Huddler's own primary definition of their platform) with inadequate forum software. If we needed a Wiki, why not just set up a separate MediaWiki system that's linked from the old EpicSki.com home page and from the VBB forum pages. Didn't need to be in VBB itself. Internet Brands (now the owner of VBB and several VBB-based sites) has beefed up VBB beyond the version Epic was running.

For the record, I miss every single one of the features listed by posters upthread.
