Ha ha that has to be the first time I've heard a squirrel described as exotic.

They certainly are fun to watch, especially when they are trying to outsmart bird feeders that are designed to keep them out, the squirrel almost always win. they really are pretty smart or at least resourceful critters.

Bears, Elks and the Mighty Moose

So I was skiing down the Bear in Fernie, and see a commotion ahead. I get onto ski-out/beginner run under the Elk chair and what do I see running down the mountain but a moose. No kidding, Bullwinkle was parting the red sea of snow sliders. There was quite a bit of screaming but no-one was hurt before he ran into the woods beside, wait for it... the Mighty Moose chairlift.

I'm not quite sure if img works here, but I'll give it a go. Here is the Vole (an American said it was a Vole), shaking at lineup at PCMR. He'd just sit there and shake.

There are all kinds of these things around. Need to increase the predators like hawks, owls, coyotes and wolves to keep em in check!

Or at least cats ....

At JH I,ve seen Moose, Elk, Coyotes, Ermine, Squirrels, Ravens, Bald Eagles, Pikas, and Marmots.

I came across a pair of squirrels when skiing an access cat track in Fernie a few years ago. In Val d'Isere back in 1985 I saw a chamois on the next slope to where I was skiing. The same year I managed to end up on a walking trail in Zermatt (got myself a bit lost when I was knocked off a T-bar by a way-ward skier

) and came across three deer.

Back in Australia, not too much... a fox, eagles, wombats and kangaroos.

And here I thought that "bad rat" had been sighted...
Nice pictures.
Usually runs here are much lower than where the animals like chamois, ibexes, roe deers stay. And rodents stay well hidden away from humans, there's too many of us around.
Only when gets really cold those animals come "down" and we're able to see them. Unless you take randonnee or snowshoeing...
But, one saturday morning, early enough, I think it was 2000 or 1999, a littel roe deer got stuck on a road between two cars (coming from different directions) and kept running scared from one to the other, probaly couldn't decided how to behave in front of those smelly metallic monsters...
Soon a queue formed, no one was taking any inintiative...so I had to resolve and climb out of my car, walk to the fella and shoo (delicately, roe deers, esp young ones are shy animals and I feared it would have a stroke) him toward the woods and safety...
Who remembers the roe deer which ended up onm the final schuss in Val Gardena during Ghedinas' run?

Only time that I've ever seen a Lynx was at Whistler a few seasons back. Saw it while taking a breather in the trees off of the Dave Murray Downhill. Surprising and way cool.

Theres a mountain lion living on or around Snow King mountain. I've never seen it, but we find its tracks. A few times on night patrol I've seen groups of deer bust out of the woods like they were running from something that scared them more than the lights and the skiers.

I had heard on NPR that there was a really small acorn production this year and there was a dissusion of the implications for the squirrels later in the winter. When I lived in the east there where lots of oak trees and acorns. Has anyone noticed this lack in your area?

Also saw a fox at Snowbird, it ran right across the slope we were skiing on. Reddish fur.

Out here in the Rockies...

...we get squirrels all the time. The little so and sos love to run across the course when we're training GS...just like the little so and sos like to play chicken with us when we're out road biking. Recently, I think it was at Vail, an elk ran out on a GS course...

I was at Breck last week and a weasel ran right across the trail in front of my buddy and me. It was cool to see one in its winter colors. It was all white with black on the tip of its tail. The weasel had some kind of small rodent in its mouth.

I had a red fox run out on the trail in front of me at Jiminy Peak last night.

I have also seen rats on the trails at Jiminy.

Coincidence? I think not.

I saw a cute one of these guys in the back bowls at Vail a few years ago. I stopped to wait for my boarder boyfriend and he popped out in front of me, sat up on his haunches and commenced to checking me out. He darted in and out from a pine tree for a bit before he went in for good.

Spring skiing at Squaw 2001 saw a 'small' black bear on KT. He was about 25 yards uphill from where you could enter, so nobody could ski past him, but there was about 10-15 of us stopped and watching. He was just minding his own business digging near the base of a tree. There was nobody there that day, but somebody threatened the group to NOT tell ski patrol b/c they didn't want them to shut down the lift. it was afternoon and KT was softening up and just perfect...next time we came though he was gone. That was truly an unforgettable experience.

I was thinking of maybe starting with a roux, some onions, bell peppers, celery, smoke sausage, broth, a little wine. Throw a dozen of the little guys in, simmer for a few hours. mmmmmm
