So they claim one deal at a time but now there are like four sites. Are they the same company just putting up yet another site?

What a PITA.

It's not really one deal at a time. It's really three or four. Why not just admit it and put up one site with three or four deals and have one monitoring interface.

Do they expect people to run four desktop monitors?

What a PITA.

Of course I don't have to buy anything from them but it was kinda fun to just watch the deals got by. I think I bought a few small clothing items that they odd of me sending them more $ go down with how much stupider the implement their business plan.

JUST MAKE IT ONE SITE WITH FOUR DEALS!!!!

They're all run by Backcountry.com, with different focuses. SAC tends to be general outdoors with some ski/board stuff thrown in. Tramdock is ski stuff, Whiskey Militia is board stuff. I think it makes sense, some good deals for everyone.
Tabbed browsing is your friend - leave a window open with tabs for each and reload as necessary, or even better, just go to http://www.cleansnipe.com/ which does what you're looking for and aggregates them into one page (plus Chain Love, which is the same idea, but bike gear).

I have pop-ups in my Firefox that monitors the 3 that I'm interested in. Not difficult at all for me. I agree that shipping can be steep if you're buying 1 pair of socks but if I'm buying a little item I get 3 and use the cheapest shipping and still come out ahead and let's be honest, shipping is steep from any vendor for one small item.

Not directed at Trek in particular, but is it really that difficult to look and not buy?

I have had 3 alerts (SAC, Tramdock, Chainlove) on my work pc (8+ hours of continuous use daily) since June and haven't bought a single thing...

I like the fact that backcountry is expanding based upon the popularity of Steepandcheap (SAC). When SAC first started it was only one deal a day, when it was sold out, it was gone till the next day (like how woot is now). Then as it became more popular it went to the style we have now where its deal after deal after deal. However it became frustrating because as much as I enjoy most of the gear on there, there were items that were strange, or not my style. So they've made other sites for more specific interests. Currently you have
SAC - general gear, hiking, backpacking, some ski stuff
Tramdock - all ski and snowboard stuff
Chainlove - biking gear (to be eventually split again into road and mountain sites)
WhiskeyMilitia - alternative, punk, type stuff

The items come from backcountryoutlet's huge inventory. Sometimes good deals (chacos for under 10 bucks come to mind), sometimes not so good deals. Yeah the shipping can suck if you're only buying one small item but get two or just skip it. On the large items you can get some awesome deals.

There are also many different sites that track all these sites and more. Gearattack is just one but it has the advantage of following what has already been sold. Gearforsports.ca is another that follows even more sites then the backcountry sponsored ones. I find it easier to just use their taskbar programs that pop up when a new deal hits.

If you dislike it that much, then you're one less person I'll have to try to beat when that next great deal comes on. I've found it to be a great way to get some good quality gear a few pieces at a time from baselayers to jackets to shoes to socks to layering pieces. Also a good community if you hit the forum side and there are other gear forums that exist that have a great community to them as well.

Lets see, In the past couple weeks I've bought bindings, 2 pairs of goggles, 2 bike tires, 2 base layer shirts...I think thats it.

I'm tired of watching these sites. Too many impulse buys.

I've been looking for a particular item to come back up on sale. Its still in stock.

Is there any way of determining when items will come up for sale again?

I like that they focused the sites down -- better than having too much crap on just SAC like the old days. In fact, Tramdock is a godsend for skiers.

For those of you using a Mac, be sure to get my free MacSAC app -- this was developed because all the other solutions sucked:

You can configure it to track all four, or just a subset. I only pay attention to TD and SAC myself.

Go to gearattack.com/sites
Choose the site that had the item, and then go to items to it'd look like
sac.gearattack.com/items for SAC and then find the item and look to see the quantities left. If a lot, then probably at some point it'll show back up, if not many, then probably not. Also check out backcountryoutlet.com. The items that have large quantities will probably show up at some point.

Beyond that....go and beg on the forum associated with the site, doesn't always work but it did for the person who was ready to sleep with a sasquatch to get a piece of gear.

There were some smiths on tramdock today I think but I didn't pick them up. They're on fairly often, how do they compare to oakleys as far as goggles go? and on helmet compatibility?

phenmons are sweet.

great helmet fit, lens scratch less than oakley and the snesor mirror cuts though flat like like no other.

Not only is your statement incendiary, it's uninformed. If you understood marketing, you'd realize how ingenious their business plan is: 4 high volume sites that drive enormous traffic to their primary retail sites while simultaneously filtering by customer preference/demographic. Perhaps you don't realize just how expensive it is to advertise and direct, for example, a backcountry skiing enthusiast to a retail page with big mountain skis, at bindings, skins, etc.

I love SAC, and I like Tramdock even more. It has cost me some money- Westcomb shell, Cloudveil jacket, base layers, ski socks, Smith goggles, and ski boots for my wife; a couple pairs of Hestra gloves for myself... just wish they had some kid's stuff.

Well I got used to the firefox plugin which is actually nice and less obtrusive than the desktop monitor. No boing every time it changes. Also, when you click on the item, you can just scroll down and see the other sites' items. So if you just have SAC, you can check them all.

Now, I just upgrade to FF 3.5 as there's another plugin I need for work that requires FF 3.5 and the SAC monitor won't run on FF 3.5 :-(

I had been very disciplined lately, hadn't bought much at all. Then ... a pair of Salomon Z12Ti bindings, a pair of Hestra gloves, and another down jacket. (It's, uh, for my daughter. Yeah!)

And the down jacket that I bought this morning? I received the "Your order is complete" email at 8:14 am, and the "Your order has been shipped" email at 9:21 am. I'll probably get the package tomorrow, but maybe Thursday. It's just too well done.
