core shot repair with strips of salvaged base material

I have used ths method to repair core shots where flaming p-tex candles will not stick. I get an old pair of skis and using knife and chizel, strip some base material off the ski. I cut a rectangular hole in the damaged base, a rectangle to match from the base material strips I have, and epoxy the material into the core shot. It has held for a season now and Ihave no reason to believe that it leaks water or that it will soon fail. Is there any error in my thinking or is this a sound practice? and a good use of landfill destined planks at that. thanks for you advice.

That's the way to go when you've really gouged your ski.

I have one suggestion, though - put down the napalm candle and let all the third-degree burns on your hands heal... Then, go for ribbon or string and apply with a soldering iron with a flat tip. (You can get all this at Slidewright.com). Since I made the switch a few years ago, I haven't had a single repair fall out or even crack.

Good luck avoiding those rocks!

In fact, they sell a whole kit dedicated to that exact repair. The kit comes with a series of different "stamps". You use the stamp to cut out a half circle, rectangle or whatever, and then use the same stamp to punch out a piece of poly-whatever (base material). Mix epoxy, clamp and smile.

Here's the kit (use Hysol general purpose clear epoxy or equivalent):

or you can get it sheets (or cannibalize old skis):

Depending on the size, using some metal grip, followed by welding rod or even ptex candles and a soldering iron may be easier. Here's our blog article on some Base Repair Options.
