Looks like they found the perfect combination of boat trim setting, board size, and rider size. I'm guessing they used a rope to get started. Very cool indeed.
I'd rather be skiing

If it's so cool why should God damn it ? I'm very confused.

Large displacement ships have huge bow wakes that I have seen people surf. Hey it's surfing . That makes it cool in my book .

I've done a little of that (well not without the rope yet) It's a hoot! Great alternative when there's no glass to slalom - and an awesome balance trainer. Its really odd being right at the back of the boat carrying on a conversation - theoretically a person could have a cold beverage handed back to enjoy!

Seen them doing that from time to time in the Delta. Only thing I've wondered is any issues with fumes from the boat engine?

I've wakesurfed before too, and it is pretty fun. I only do it when there is bad water like 4cznskier but it is pretty fun.

This is just what all us sailors and fishermen dread. Yet another mechanized sport to make noise and waves in the small lakes around the nation.

Can't see the vid. at work but I think I know what it is of.
Its way fun. I spend part of my summers doing it every year. You'd be suprised how small of a wake you can do it on if you are correctly balanced on the right surfboard. We just start towing on your stomach then pull yourself up so you're standing like a wakeboard then slowly pull more rope in as you approach the larger part of the wake then when you feel the water start to move you, you can just let go and surf as long as you feel like.
People in the gulf of Mexico do it on the waves of oil tankers which is slightly different and way cooler than being right behind a boat.

Did a little surfin' yesterday - as usual my local lake is too busy/rough this time of year to ski.
It's actually not that difficult, especially if you have ever wakeboarded. The start is pretty much the same. No bindings but when the boat is put in gear the forward momentum presses the board against your feet.

When you get good (like I'm not), you toss the rope into the boat and just ride the wave like Ryan here...




As said before, lottso' fun and a great balance trainer, but you need a fat wakemakin' inboard boat with the prop UNDERNEATH because you're just a few feet back!

Biggest wake I've ever seen was from a nuclear sub running on the surface out of Groton. It turned our 38' sailboat into a submarine.

There was an article in the Pinedale (Wyoming) paper last week I think about two kids who were doing this (lying down on their boards maybe) who were overcome by carbon monoxide fumes and hospitalized. I think they were actually hanging onto the swim platform. Being on a board just behind the prop doesn't strike me as the brightest thing to be doing. I imagine if you have your wits about you, which surprisingly few seem to, you'll be OK but its just a matter of time before we start hearing about chopped-up touristas. I wouldn't let my child do it.
