New Blown Edge Thread

I have a blown edge that seems to be more of an issue with the edge being seperated rather than blown out. The edge still has the base material attached. The seperation is the width of the edge(plus the part the is inside the ski) and between the edge and core. Check out the picture and let me know.

Ouch!

past argument aside...that looks nasty. It's a little hard to tell from the picture just how much damage there is to the the rest of the ski but I think that should be repairable (though it will be a big job). To do so, the base will have to be trimmed away from the edge, a new piece of edge material placed, screwed, and epoxied. Then, of course, the base will have to be patched so if you are doing the repair yourself cut the base in such a way that you can easily patch

I had great success with my first edge repair last season following the advice posted here: http://www.telemarktips.com/BaseRepair.html

Luckily, I had all the right tools and materials, an extra ski to harvest base material from, and (most importantly) other skis to ride on. It was quite a job, but in the end, it was very satisfying (looking at the base, you can hardly tell major surgery had been done).

Ouch...those skis, judging by the base, look pretty new, maybe contact the manufacturer.

Contact the manufacturer? That didn't just happen by itself! The edge didn't just fall out!!

If you turned right into the path of an oncoming car at a stoplight in a brand new Denali and it hit you, would you call GMC to see if they will replace your ride?

Beleive it or not, the edge is actually in great shape. It is just bent I think that I will try to heat it up bend it back down. I will get a more detailed picture so you can see what the damage is.

If the edge isn't damaged your plan may work pretty well, just make sure you don't heat any base area that you're going to keep on the ski

Actually, it kinda did happen by itself. Turns out that the edge was not secured to the ski in that area. It seperated from the ski and caused a fall on an icy run. It was literally the only run that they were used.

They were sent back to Volkl by the shop.

Oh, cool. I'm sure they'll replace it. They are pretty good about that.

I just wanted to use the opportunity to needle Rich about pulling out in front of a lady at a stoplight....

That does very much look like a defect. Normally you hit things hard enough to substantially deform or even break the edge before it pulls out of the ski, usually with a bunch of evidence of cracked/dented core and sidewall. That isn't a blown edge so much as a big delam.

Not that there is anything wrong with giving Richie a hard time.

From the photo, that looked like a de-lam issue with the edge. I don't think anyone could do anything to have the edge separate that cleanly. I'm glad volkl hooked you up, it was definitely a manufacturing issue and not your fault at all.
