Helmet cams

The helmet cam footage thread got me interested in acquiring one for myself. I am not interested in a professional model, I want something cheap that will do the job (especially since these type of things have a way of wearing out their novelty in no time).

So which out of the cheapo helmet cams are worth buying?

I saw one by Oregon Scientific ATC2K that looks decent.

Thanks

not that good....I have one, that I got for nothin, not that good.

The only ways to do this is with a digi camera with high resolution and or the VIO. The professional models are the only cameras that produce watchable video IMO.

What BWPA said. I looked into getting one and the HD high dollar is the only way to go.

Buy a Go Pro Hero cam, these are available through Yamaha dealers and are used by their factory race teams. I own one and its great, price is under $200 including mounts and an underwater housing.

RR, listen to the wisdom! Cheap is cheap. Check out Vholdr out, it'snot cheap but is the way to go. Its completely self-contained, records onto a memory card, no cables or wires, rock-solid. great resolution with a nice wide angle lens that doesn't distort. they are a lot of fun. the easier to use, the more you will use it. it's a blast to film throughout the day. Even if you suck, (like me) its fun to look back and have a laugh;especially if youcatch someone yard saleing.

I want to play around with an entry level unit first. If I like it, and keep liking it then I'll step up.

I have one of these. Use it when I go dirt biking. It pretty much sucks IMHO. I was told that they will not work in cold weather.

Kid, is it the same model? I know that this one is a revamp of the original.

I'd try to look for one with some flexible mounting options:

Disappointed to hear that, I almost bought that when it came out then read some mixed reviews, and the thing was not cheap, I think $500-600. So I held off.

I have this one too. Works OK, but the mounting is too far away from helmet and creates a cantilever situation. I'm trying to figure a way to mount it better.
Doesn't have the anti bounce/shake mode though. $70

I'm telling ya' the Vholdr is a great unit! Works in all conditions, easy to use, self-contained, lots of different mounts.

A few of my ATV buddies use these when we ride. They basically have a bullet cam they attach to their goggles...it's a slick set up. You can usually pick up a bullet cam that will work with the RCA jacks on a regular old video camera. Of course, my Sony doesn't have RCA jacks and I can't find a bullet cam that will work with it. Oh well.

VIO the best on the market IMO

oregon scientific

sure the VIO is like a million dollars but you know what its the only watchable option there is.

VholdR

I'm with Finndog, I have had the best time messing around with my VholdR. I have zero experience in filming, but this cam easily hooks on to your googles and allows you to capture high quality footage. I also really like the easy editing software that they include with the camera. VholdR also has a pretty cool site where you can upload your videos...

Best independent cam site review (has side by side comparisons etc...) Conclusion: Xtreme Recall is the best. I am not affiliated with Xtreme Recall or helmetcam review but I do own an Xtreme Recall unit. Tits. http://www.helmetcamreview.com/ My review here: http://tetongravity.com/forums/showt...=xtreme+recall

buy it from backcountry (or store with comparable return policy, satisfaction guarantee): if you don't like it for any reason send it back. the only way to go with an item that involves so much speculation.

I experimented with putting a mini dv on my helmet. I did get a lot of looks and questions about it and whether or not I was making a ski movie
It was quite the conversation piece. Here's a video I shot, the camera tends to bounce around at speed and terrain because of the weight but I've seen regular helmet cam videos that do the same.
