Help me choose GS ski

Asking what is the best GS ski is like asking what is the best beer... you will get a slew of opinions. My opinion... if you are not going to be in any GS courses, and all of the skis are the same price point, close your eyes and throw a dart. Worst case scenerio, you ski them for a year, and add them to your quiver. At less than $300, you can add or upgrade every other year and all you have to do is play 2 fewer rounds of golf...

... I live and die by Atomic skis... there th ebest. But if I had to chose, I would probably go with the Fischers.

Fischer may have had that tip shape in in 2002 also.

Nord, I don't pretend to have studied the shape in much depth like you and DC so will not comment on when it came in. However as DC indicates, in my simple experoience from skiing the Fischers from 04 thru 07 (the 06 and 07 are virtually the same ski) in the >21m version as opposed to the >27m version introduced for 08, DCs observations are spot on. the 05 onwards hook up and turn in much better and are much easier to make line adjustments. I am happy to ski on the 06 or 07 version all day as well as race on it. I could never get that level of comfort on the 04 or earlier versions. I persuaded one of the guys i train with to move from the 03 to the 07 version and he was blown away with the difference and you could visibly see the improvement in the course. i have also noticed similar changes between the 04 and 06 Elan GSX. I can't comment on the Atomics as i have only skied on the 06 womens race stock referred to by A-man. Also a great ski but a different feel from the Fischer

(confession - I have a GS ski habit with 6 different pairs in the quiver wtf!!!)

Wow, Woman's race stocks that stiff. What racer had them before you? Where they too stiff for her?

Flex pattern.

I have GS skis that are very similar in shape but ski very different due to the softer tips in the more recent GS skis. I can ski more in the middle of the new GS skis and still get the outside skis tip to hook up. I think the softer tips let the skis intiate turns faster despite the wider waists.

Also I thought the original poster just wanted a go fast ski, not a phat arc ski. That's why I suggested the big old skis.

New direct from Atomic!

Real women's FIS legal skis are not for the ligh hearted. have you ever skied with any of the gals who have been on the on the US team? I have, and do on a regular basis.

These women are in some kind of incredible shape! Stronger then hell and ski at speeds you & I can only dream about. They have thiss way of accelerating out of each turn. (Lotsa training & miles I guess)

If you think you are a good skier and ski fast try to follow on of them down a mountain sometime.

Hello everyone.  This thread provided me TONS of insight and good info, so instead of starting a new thread I thought I would bump this and see where it went.

I never ended up buying GS skis last season.  I went with some iM 78's in 177.  I bought these with the assumption I would add to my quiver.

There is a lot of opinions on length in this thread.  Obviously weight has a lot to do with this.  I have added on ~13 lbs since last season (I am in the low 180's right now), and by the time 2010 hits I will most likely be around 195.  I skied the im78's last year, and they are nice.  Once you get them on edge they are pretty stable, but once they started seeing higher speeds and wider turns they would lose stability.  Point being, there was some conjecture regarding what to recommend for me, as I hadn't been on skis very much in a few years, and hopefully this helps.  I like the iM78's a lot, but on days I wanted to bomb around, I think I pushed the limits of the ski.

I am looking at FIS 21mm skis.  Womens models and the pre-07 (I think, i cant remember if its 06 or 07) Mens GS skis.  I am wondering if most still think a 188 is too much ski, how womens FIS race skis will treat me, and if mens race stock will be too stiff for me.

Thanks again.

i love volkls, and those are what work for me. the only other skis ive skied on are fischer and atomic and i would chose volkl. fischer "hole in the top" is also very nice, but very exspensive since they just came out last season.

Thanks, but I ended up buying some older Fischer GS skis from a fellow member.  They are pre FIS 27mm radius.  I think they will be perfect for me.  Just for the record I went with a 188, in mens race stock.
