These SCX's  (Side Cut eXtreme) are from around 1998...which begs the question, when is gear "RETRO"

Ten years out? or when it has been displaced by newer technology?

Nice!  I need to display some of my odd bindings that way.

That little gray toy dog is a nice addition to your ski collection.

Good find! I remember switching to the "new" skis. I was on 205cm. and went all the way down to 178 cm. That was an odd feeling because I was of the mind set of "LONG SKIS GOOD -- SHORT SKIS BAD"

Now there are so many unique shapes and lengths out there anymore like "Icelantic" or the big "K2 Pontoons"  I don't even pay any attention to the length of skis people are on.

10 years old sounds fair enough to be "retro".  More than 40 years old or pre 1970 is "Vintage"

I vote:

Vintage>40 years old>Retro>10 years old>Current

Smell that?  Winter's coming!

I'd agree with the relative time frames but say Vintage, Classic, Current. To me, retro is when you have something new that looks old. Like a new lava lamp or the re-issued Hart Javelin; both are cool to have, but retro, not classic.

Speaking of the 'cat, this is a ticket from the last day of rides on the old gondola before they decommissioned it. A sad day. Lots of little 'eggs' are 'hanging' around the Valley now.

MR-

Below is a photo I took of the skimobile  from your hometown (probably late 80s). It does look like there would be quite a bit of maintenance with it. Still a shame they took it out since it was really unique.

The good folks at WOMANTOURS sent me some info on the ski shrine.

"Hi -
My name is Sid and I was your MIL's bicycle guide last week.  The ski wall is on the North Douglas Rd. in Juneau - on the way to Eagle Crest ski area - every year it grows - I think they're getting more contributions each year.  I live in Haines - so I don't know who the wall belongs to.  We have some of the greatest skiing on the planet - hope to see you up here some spring.
I'll ask around and if I get any juicy info on "the wall" I'll forward it on.
Your Mother-in-Law rocks!
thanks
sid"

You should get some of the new ones made to original factory specs. Both Phil. P and I know Bill Holmberg of Hart. Bill's grandfather is Hartving Holmberg. Let me know if you want me to put you in contact with him - he is a pretty friendly guy.

As far as the skiers on the cover, my magazines only go back to about 77/78. Cold Warrior has magazines older than mine, but I think he said they were SKI.

How's the weather out there in Breck? -- It is about 95 degrees with high humidity today in Omaha - just lovely.  I guess it's good for ... well, I don't think it's good for anything except growing corn.

I'd love to get his contact info. Didn't know where Hart got its name, now I do.

If they don't have the Javelins, maybe they have Hornets! ;o)

Weather is great, today. Maybe tomorrow, too. Highs in the 70's. Lows in the 30's. Karen and I sailed for a couple of hours in Frisco Bay this morning. Hopefully the cycle of rain every day we have had will change to the usual few T-storms in the afternoon.

Just to clarify what I know about these. They are NOT made to the original specs. They were made by

Atomic in 1998 with original GRAPHICS. They have late 90's specs, 201cm, 90-63-79.

Rossi -- Weren't they promoting original specs at the time? Anyway, Rossi should know since he has some. I will send you Bill's info later this evening. Just came in from mowing the yard in this heat and humidity -- I need to be hosed down!

There was a shot in one of the magazines from the 80's. It was from Telluride. It was a picture of a skier from behind on The Plunge, he was wearing a denim jacket and had on the black & gold Atomic ARC's, he was airborne and looked like he was suspended over the town of Telluride.

Does that mean they also don't ski exactly like the original?

PeterSobran nabbed a pair of Javelins from me back in this thread. He's in CT, too, maybe he'll let you ride them one day if you ask nicely!

I guessed and I was right.  Here's what the table of contents page says about the cover photo:  "Incredible what they do on skis these days.  Our two performers--Herman Goellner and Tom Leroy--were frozen in place by famed ski photographer Shorty Wilcox as the performed for the new film 'Moebius Flip.'"

Jean-Claude Killy is listed as the "Racing Director" of the magazine.

That particular issue is filled with interesting information.  Killy appears in ads for Look/Nevada bindings, a line of ski hats with a K logo, Wolverine sports wear and something else.  An Austrian ski called the Rebel has a fold-out ad.  There's a small ad for a San Marco boot called the Gemini, which was plastic molded with two buckles.  Spalding was distributing the Dyna-Quick boot and had a full-page ad.  Raichle advertised its Fiber Jet along with traditional leather five buckle boots.  Sears was selling skis.  Kastinger had two full pages to introduce "the new breed of ski boot", its hinged plastic five-buckle Futurua Plastic boot.  la Dolomite had what looked to be a plasticized leather, rather tall six buckle by Gartner which the referred to as an "all plastic boot."  Hard to tell.  Humanic was selling boots made out of a synthetic Coverite material.

I loved that time in my life.

Thanks,

Cold Warrior

I have that same pair -- I found mine at a GOODWILL store for $10.

So are you a skier/rock star?  Looks like you have your skis in a recording studio.

 Hi reducedfatoreo,

Those skis are on their way to MastersRacer, so Rossi will have to ask him nicely!

My wife has the redos, I have never skied on them. Here they are w/early Javelins. I got these out of St. Paul. Please note the style/font of the owner's name. It is an exact match of the Hart graphics. I wonder if this was something special for Hart employees (these never left the St. Paul area).

Cool shot SRD! There are so many great skiers on this site!

I will be in Vail next week to visit the ski museum once again, so I might have to swing by your shop.

I am staying in Breck so MastersRacer and I are planning to meet up.

Not with those toe peices

And besides that, only Javelin SL's will work for me. I passed on some 210cm GS's a while back.

There was a version of "The Boss" that was supposed to be a homage to these graphic skis but it never made it to production.
