I see the fourth pair from the left were mismounted with the toe mount being mistaken for the midsole. If I had to guess it was a Salomon binding (probably a 444 or 555 series). I can dredge up a picture, but I do think you bought the blueish purple one from me. If you scour back in this thread, there is a picture of a green pair of The Ski, first I ever saw that color too. Not too may pictures of TRS's or Puppets showing up though.

Phil,   I went back and looked at my log of purchases and the far right on was from you. The forth pair (The Grays) were mismounted by some one in a shop. Still I had not see to many of the grays around so I picked them up long ago.  I continue to look for other skis. TRS's and Puppets.                                                                                                 I have never seen a green Theski.                                                                                                                               Thanks

Thanks for posting the Iselin book scans.

I had the fortunate opportunity as a teenager back in the early 1970s to ski for a day with Clif Taylor back in Wisc. at my home ski area.  Our ski school had the GLM Elan skis and Clif came for a day to promote their use.  He was one of my "ski gods" at the time and skied and looked the part and very gracious and professional.  Along the way I purchased a couple of his books as well as a pair of his skis that were presented to Lowell Thomas.  I have, somewhere, one of the Elan GLM brochures from back in the 1970s but can't seem to find it right now.  When I locate it I will scan it and post it.

I ended up skiing on a pair of Elan 03s back around 1980 and really liked them  Eventually got the original MBXs with the "Made in Yugoslavia" imprint.  As I am a West Point grad and former Army intel officer, I especially like the irony of enjoying skiing on "Commie skis," which I always called them.

Cold Warrior - Great collection!

The Skier's Bible (1972) has a chapter on Clif Taylor. I have 2 copies -- must have been that great price that inspired me to buy 2 copies back in middle school.

Master Racer -

Are you any relation to Bill Briggs (instructor/Teton skier) or the Briggs that was (maybe still is) at the Steadman Hawkins knee clinic in Vail?

Mackware,

My goal is to find a pair of Raichle Fiber Jet Speed Freaks and ski in them.  Always wanted a pair.  Of course you notice that the pair on the left on the photo you posted has three pieces of leather in the strap ankle strap and two pieces on the blue pair on the right.  Any info as to why the difference?  My observations tell me the earlier Fiber Jets had two pieces and the later two.

Thanks,

Dan

No relation to either, however, I met Steady while on the team and later in life when he rebuilt an ACL for me. The first of two reconstructions, one on each knee. The other was done by Randy Viola of the SH Clinic.

I know this isn't the boot you are looking for, but do you have a year and model on this pair?

I purchased them on ebay and they predate any periodicals I have.

Pete,

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but my guess would be this particular "plastic-coated leather" Raichle boot, based on the sticker on the side, the plastic coating and the buckles, was sold as late as 1971 or 1972.  If I come across any additional info in the magazines I have (I have almost a complete set of SKI and SKIING from around 1964 through 1975) I will let you know.

Thanks,

CW

Thanks for the boot info!

Your magazines end about when mine start. Between us we have from 1964 to the present covered -- good to know! I need to get on ebay and buy some older issues. What I have now is just from subscriptions and what I bought on newstands over the years. I never was planning on having a big collection -- it just ended up being that way.

Some of the ski museums around the U.S. have libraries -- I would like to get in those and see what they have. I was in the Sun Valley museum about 10 years ago during the summer, and they had the door propped open with a stack of vintage SKI magazines!

Interesting how our interests vary.  I suspect you "came of age" in skiing slightly later than.  I started skiing around 1968 and was really intrigued by how ski technology was starting to change from leather lace-ups to leather buckle boots to plastics and metal and all the various combinations of the materials.  For example, Koflach had a plastic, metal, leather boot.  Then there was the Dyna-Quick.  The incredibly complex Rosemounts.  The foam injection systems.  The Scotts.  Daleboot.  And the various methods for adjusting forward flex and canting.  Eventually, along came the Hansons, which eventually came up with minimalist designs that I suspect were very inexpensive to mass produce.  An injection molding system for the shell, one for the liner, and a couple of buckles.  Here's a few photos:

See the little air inflation nozzle above the rear laces?  This is a Henke leather boot with a plastic air bladder.  I guess you'd drive up to the gas station nearest the slopes, inflate the boots, and then head to the ski area parking lot.

And if the manufacturers didn't come up with a high-enough back, you could always just get an add-on like the Jet Stix.

Hope you liked the photos.

Thanks.

Okay historians, a couple of questions about Henke after seeing Coldwarriors post.

Were they the 1st to do a commercial buckle boot?  Sure hope so there is a bet riding on this one.

Anybody have a pic of the Henke Rebel?  It was about 1970 or so, red white and blue plasticized leather, 3 buckle boot.  Was actually a fairly high end.  I skied it part of 1 winter (a lot 1 winter like 4 pairs; leather kept going soft and loosing support).  Been trying to explain it to the kids, they think it is just another rant by the old man.

Help! and Thanks.

I sprained my left knee when I was seven.  No Surgery, but I had a cast for two months - that was my last season in bear trap bindings.  I've never been hurt racing.  I took plenty of spills over the years, but never windmilled.  Outside of getting the wind knocked out of me from crashing an arial or two in the bumps, I've never been injured since (40 years on skies).   I think that sense of invulnerability is one of the reasons I still don't wear a helmet when I'm free skiing.

I'm glad that you have had such a safe skiing career.

My first skiing injury was a broken back in 1977, then around 1985 I tore an ACL free skiing. It was a weird injury because I didn't fall and get hurt, I simply looked up hill when I was merging, unweighted the downhill ski and it twisted left and right. My leg was essentially straight. The doc cleaned up the cartilidge, removed the residue of the ACL and I used a DonJoy brace until I began having chronic pain, even just walking. Steady did my ACL reconstruction with my patella tendon in 2001, then in 2002 I tore the other ACL race training. Similar situation as before; I wasn't going to make it so I stood up and the downhill ski twisted left and right. Another patella tendon repair. Both ACL tears were complete. Since the original surgery in 1985 I've had subsequent clean ups of meniscus in addition to the two ACL reconstructions.

I have stopped competitive racing because I can't afford the hospital bills or down time from work. There are a few exceptions: I race an 'easy' DH at Ski Cooper and fore run some other speed events. I hope to return to a business league racing on tele gear if I can recover from a neuroma in my foot (right where the ball of the foot bends in a tele boot).

Fore running lets me run the course at my own comfort level as well as I have a pristine course. Both course conditions and the competitive drive seem to be the biggest contributors to injury following, of course, poor technique. Racing exposes you to excessive stresses as well as greater speed than most skiing so it is more dangerous. That risk is countered by the fact that you are always in a closed arena; no public to avoid.

I rarely ski without a helmet as I've seen how it can save your life. I also like steep terrain and trees where there are numerous objective hazards. In the spring I sometimes use a bicycle helmet for comfort.

Ironically the worst injury, a broken back, has had no detremental affect on my present day skiing, while the knee injuries sometimes act up or at least give me pause.

Great stuff!! That Dyna-Quick is one wild looking boot -- I have never seen that before. Like we were talking about earlier I became interested in skiing in the mid 70s around the Hanson era. I bought my first SKI magazine  a year before I ever went skiing for the first time at age 16.

ABC's WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS and the OLYMPICS are what initially grabbed my interest (plus I have always loved winter).

Are your black Hansons above Magnums? And on another note, I wasn't aware Daleboot was associated with Reiker.

I only have one pair of Reikers (far left) -

I have 2 pair of Henkes -- the one above in great shape, and the one below which is mint but the plasticized leather is self-destructing.
