intermediate ski for big guy

I am debating what ski to buy here is my info, any help is apreciated.

6'2" 285lbs
mainly ski blues but will get in to blacks next week! i hope
looking for all mountain skis groom/but also will not hold me back off piste

I ski in colorado mainly, this will be my first pair of skis as i always rent and found out it is more expensive in the long run.

Any advise will be appreciated

at 285 you could ski just about anything

hot rod top fuel, ss magnum, tigershark 12'

maybe nomad crimson, although it wouldnt be my first choice...

none are designed as "intermediate" skis per se, but with your body mass youll have no problem flexing them. all are wide enough underfoot to give you confidence but shaped enough to make turning easier for you without going 8787 miles an hour

I have a friend who just got back into skiing this year after being away from the sport for a decade+. He went with the Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous in a 186 (based on a rec on this board) and loves them. Same ski construction but a bit wider is the Afterburner.

thanks for the info all! i am doing some shopping around and will dem a couple of them since vail will get dumped on this weekend. I went to a small shop and they said I should also look at the M88. We will see

tried the m88's , they felt great all around but were a little hard to turn in the bumps up in vail. Maybe they are too much ski for me. I saw some of the recomendations above , which one of those are easier to turn but at the same time provide me with enough stability at faster speeds and on light powder for a guy my size. Would ac30's or legend 8000 be out of range for me?

Those are both good choices. I would not go wider than 80mm at the waist. This thread might help: http://forums.epicski.com/showthread...548#post879548

If you liked the iM88s but want something more agile, you could try the iM83 or iM78. The 78 has gotten very high marks all around -- I'm an equally big guy (6'6", 280) and if I didn't have to deal with Eastern ice all the time I might have gone for the iM78. I just found it too skittish on hardpack, but YMMV.

I ended up with a Dynastar Contact Limited (72mm underfoot). But I wanted a ski primarily for crappy Eastern conditions ("frozen granular", AKA ice), and I don't go off-piste too much.

Heard good things about the Legends, but didn't demo them. Couldn't find demos locally of the Nordicas. AC30s are definitely a possibility, but I didn't really like the feel. Sluggish.

ok im getting in to blacks now, i must say i like all types of terrain but i know i will ski almost 100% of the time in colorado. I went to a couple of shops including boulder ski deals and was recomended atomic blackeyes. Someone else recomended me the mojo 90, another the im82. Diferent skis I know and thats what confusing me . I wonder if it even matters since like its been said before i can flex everything! Im only getting one ski.

One ski you might want to look at is the 2008 Elan Magfire 12. Had a chance to demo them two weeks ago, and came away very impressed. Quite a beefy ski, wood core with one sheet of metal, fairly stiff but not overpowering in any way. Very smooth, very easy to ski, but still very stable. 82mm waist. Great for groomers, okay in bumps, and a bulldozer in crud. And it doesn't hurt that Dawg has them in the 176/184 sizes at a great price.

I am a big fat guy as well, 6' 2 @ 300lb. I am "advanced intermideate", I can see pretty much anything, but prefer blues. This year I got myself 177 Nordica HotRod HellCat and absolutely love them. Never experienced so much confidece on any ski! I chose this ski over extensive demo of varios skis like
- Watea 84,94
- Atomic Nomad Crimson
- Atom Snoop
- Volkl Matra
- Rossignol B94
- Nordica Enforser (I loved this one too!)
- Volkl Tigershark
- Head iM88,78
It seems like Nordica makes the right skis for the fat guys

thanks for the info! i might give the nordica line a try. do you know if anyone in vail has nordicas for demo? i will be there from friday morning to sunday for the closing weekend
