Alps Spring Skiing - Where to Go?

I will be in the Alp in mid-Apr. We will be able to ski for 2 or 3 days. Where should we head - Zermatt? I assume you can demo skis and I can just pack my boots and gear?

Late season is best to go for the higher altitudes obviously so Zermatt is a safe albeit very expensive option. It's hard to do Zermatt on the cheap and quite pointless as well. A place like Val Thorens in the 3 Vallées would also be a safe and less costly bet.
