Last Minute Vacation Rentals Deals-Are They Out There?

Do places on VRBO.com and the like offer last minute deals to avoid empty rentals? If so, would this plan work???

Book a hotel in Reno/Tahoe or SLC ahead of time (or anywhere else near a ski area where there are hotels you could cancel on 24-48hr notice). Maybe 2 or 3 days before leaving for vacay, look around for a last minute vacation property vacancy going cheap. If you find one, cancel the hotel and go there... if not stay at the hotel.

If last minute deals are out there, what are they usually like?

When I've rented through VRBO, it's a direct negotiation with the owner. So At least on that site the answer is simply "it depends." If you find a vacant property close to the time you travel and can cut a deal with the owner soon enough to cancel your hotel ... you win. If not, don't cancel. But sometimes the owners take awhile to get back to you, so I'd start looking more than 2 or 3 days in advance.

Another resource for last minute deals is Craigslist. I had a good experience with last minute rental found on Craigslist and did get a price break but it's a real buyer beware situation.

Yes. As previous poster said, it depends. But a few years ago, we found a gigantic house in Breck (slept 20, almost new, gorgeous place) for $400/night at Thanksgiving. We had a bunch of family in town, so it ended up being $80/night/family. Nice. I think that place usually starts at $800/night. Good luck

yes I have seen owners post on the VRBO website that they have had cancellations and offer deals. You can usually tell if they have a calendar on their page whether or not the property is rented but usually getting the exact amount of days might be tough.

As someone else stated, response time back might be slow via email so always call the phone numbers on the websites.

Excuse the spamminess, but you can check out TahoeLastMinute.com if you're looking for vacation homes, hotels, or other lodging in Tahoe.
