Alpine Meadows reported sold

Andy Wertheim sends out a daily email about conditions at Alpine Meadows (CA.) This came through in his post today:

"Alpine Meadows has been SOLD! or at least a sale is in escrow to close in June. Hopefully, this will be exciting to many of you who have been wishing for new owners the past few years. The buyers are rumored to be the same people that recently purchased Homewood Ski Area. The first words being shuffled around are that they plan to upgrade Alpine in the future and try to bring it back to the great, friendly ski area it was in the past."

If only they'd buy Squaw next ....

i thought the folks who bought Homewood were money grubbing capitalists only interested in building a strip mall where the old Homewood Lodge is currently located.

Or did I read the last snippet about Homewood being up for sale incorrectly?

i personally dig the low-key vibe at Alpine. With Sugarbowl putting in ski in/ski out condos, Alpine and Homewood are really the last of the "Old School" resorts still in Tahoe. Oh, and Kirkwood and Rose, too.

Sugar Bowl is doing somewhat limited development to fund on-mountain improvements just like in the old days. Have you been to Kirkwood recently ? Homewood is extremely limited in its development potential given its location in the Tahoe Basin. Does anyone 'ski Squaw' anymore ? Difficult to see where future development will intrude on the skiing at Alpine. Then again look what they did at N* where the day skiers are no longer welcome : Ahh, Mount Rose :

I dearly love Alpine Meadows as-is. I don't want to see any more high-speed lifts, condo developments, etc. Leave it alone.

Of course, my model for what a ski area should be is A Basin, so there ya go. Small, funky and steep.

I sincerely hope the new owners don't try and turn it into Squaw II.
