Wachusett Conditions and get togethers

Skied the 'Beast Saturday 12/9. Only one trail open, not too bad conditions, a bit crunchy. Great to be back on snow!

Wachusett 12/10 with hrstrat57, Ice Queen, RISkier and a couple of unnamed and affiliation undisclosed Offspring.

It may be small and not steep, but they are snow making and grooming magicians! A few trails open, we skied Challenger (moderate blue) and Connifer (steeper blue) over and over again.

Very good conditions, not soft, but very skiable, beautifully groomed trails. I think it was 3, maybe 4 days ago the whole mountain was completely bare - it's really amazing what can be done with the money for enough guns - in 3 days.

Not crowded, great weather in the 20's.

First off Challenger, a long, easy cruiser with a few places you can get going fast on, but mostly just "wheee!" skiing. Youngest Un/Non Offspring was on new skis - that was the excuse to ski over there, but honestly we all love/loved it.

Ice Queen on her Burnin Luvs right off impressed me, skiing only about 4 years but her turns were smooth and rhythmic with not even an echo of a wedge. Significant Other RISkier is also a 4 year skier, both started as adults (as did I.) He also skied really well. These folks as it turned out were at the ETU's and have taken a lot of lessons, it works folks! When I had been skiing only 4 years I was far below their levels. They were a blast to ski with, really nice, warm people!

hrstrat of course was way off ahead often as he just likes to skis fast (must be the extra 5cm on his RX-8's over me - and the flouro.)

Older Un/Non O. clearly an accomplished skier just out of college - ah to be young again! Younger adjusting to new skis more and more as the day went on and looking really good!

Then over to Connifer from the summit. Trail was in great condition and except for the "Go Fast, Lose Pass" signs you can really fly on it. Nice wide at times curving trail with a couple of drops steep enough that you can do sharp short turns, or fly down (under control and not TOO Fast of course )

By 11 the snow was a little softer too. A couple of pitches exposed some ice with time.

Back to Challenger (for a cool down?) for a few runs, snow was holding up better there.

SMJ was very relieved that his knee wasn't bothering him. For the last few months have had on and off knee pain on stairs only. Skiing didn't tweak it, although side stepping up to the lift hurt a LOT, not going to be doing much of that. Felt good about my skiing, most of what I've learned is becoming 1.85nd nature. Still think about things from time to time, ankle flex, extension/flexion - but also many times that it is 2nd nature.

Great start to the season in the East. My trick of the last 2 or 3 years is to ski small hills - they can cover and groom much better. A big mountain has TOO much terrain to take care of us when the natural snow is lacking.

Nothing can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

yep another "epic" day

Well, first day a long time coming but it finally did and a great day it was.

SMJ, I have said it before epicski is great, tips and discussion on gear, technique and resorts, arguing over baseball, talking about golf:.....finding the best free ski instruction in the world(see my signature) but the best part is hooking up with epicski bears for skiing and sharing the passion of this magical thing we love.....

Ice queen and RIskier huge fun to hang with and everything SMJ says is true - very smooth skiers. Crazy thing is we met on the internet and they live literally 5 minutes from me. Unbelievable that our paths didn't cross until now, despite the mutual friends we know.

The pups, yep they're mine and a proud daddy I am. I like to think my true ability to teach skiing is reflected in my kids, not only by the way they ski, but by the way they love being on the mountain, treasuring every minute and respecting the rules of the road....not to mention how much they love being together. I think they know how precious time together on the hill is. How lucky I am to have them. They enjoyed the quality hang with epicski buds too.

Wa was fast today, some scratch, some cookies, some crunchies and a lot of styrofoam just starting to soften up but considering how little time the Crowleys had to cover the hill there wasn't much to complain about. I was real pleased personally with my first day.....all the tennis I played, a few weights I lifted and the studying of the videos below I did last week to refresh my mind with the timing of modern ski turn led me to what I felt was my personal best first day ever from a technique perspective. Not perfect, but solid....the timing was there and I only focused on engaging LTE....in other words....just ski'd. Of course the well prepared, razor sharp 170 Fischer RX 8 's didn't hurt either...the new high end gear is truly amazing. As SMJ said I was able to ski real fast, getting good angles at times and often really railing the edges at gs speeds and higher...gosh what a blast the new skis are....if you haven't joined the revolution yet, well ya'll are missing out.

Great day, great fun and looking forward to some quality slope time with my growing group of barking bear buds!

SMJ, Ice queen and RIskier.....my whole crew thanks you!

BTW SMJ......I am getting 175 RX 8's also - soon.....I expect you will have even more trouble catching me

Wish I was there ...

Great write-up (as usual) guys!!

Wish I could have made it out to join you. I've been psyched to get back on skis again after a fabulous (in-spite-of-the-weather) year last year ... but it'll be a couple of days yet for me

Look forward to skiing with you on the next set though!

Keep thinking thoughts of cold & snow!

Ice Queen and I had a fantastic day skiing with SMJ, hrstrat57, and the young uns. SMJ and hrstrat57 did a great job with trip reports so I'll be brief. Conditions were much better than I though possible given the dearth of natural snow and lack of extended periods of good snowmaking weather. Challenger was a bit crunch and a little chunky early on, but definately edgeable and fun. A nice first run to determine if you can still make a turn. Connifer was softer and had good cover. Challenger was still holding up well when we left just before noon. Wachusett really does a great job with snowmaking and grooming. SMJ, hrstrat, and the children ski beautifully. Ice Queen and I really couldn't keep up, but the rest of the gang was very patient. While I'm not a strong skier, the lessons have been greatly improved my technique. I'm a believer in lessons. As an aside, after the rest of the crew left, we rode up with a young couple who were pretty chatty. The young lady had just started skiing last year and was really into it. It was fun to run into a new skier with so much enthusiasm. Just really fun to hook up with some Bears. A really great day!

You guys are way too picky about conditions. I had been DYING to go skiing and TOTALLY BUMMED about the lack of snow (I had roses blooming at the beginning of December in Rhode Island for god's sake can't someone do something about this please???) and we got to WaWa and there were actually three runs open (you guys didn't mention Look Mom) and the snow covered the entire trails (no white ribbon of death) and it wasn't solid ice like just about everything was last year, what an AMAZINGLY FUN DAY.

Then, not only were we skiing, we were skiing with four awesome skiers who were great fun, two of whom were really great kids, does it get any better than that?????? Wow.

Thanks for the kind words about my skiing. Got a couple of good tips from hrstrat too. Let's definitely do it again!

Just an accurate description of the conditions Ice Queen. Trust me I loved it as much as you did. Could it be back on the golf course or tennis courts this sunday? Gosh I hope not....and I got MWV booked at the end of the month.....even Bretton Woods only has 15 trails, Cranmore, Wildcat 2 trails....yikes. King Pine not even open yet.....might have to drive an hour to Sunday River

we shall do it again!

I am hoping to ski wa Friday.....but the incoming ugly weather looks not so good: day off, could be golf instead.....

I worked a training clinic Sat. On Sunday my wife and I brought our 5yo son 5yo niece up.

My niece wasn't quite skiing greens without help last year. My 5yo son was ski was skiing Ralph's (easy blue) and Hitch (avg blue) last year. He gets to the top of Ollies (magic carpet learning area) and freaks. He's screaming and won't ski. He sits in my wife's lap sobbing "I want to go home". My wife says "tough, your sittin' here while your cousin skis". I give me niece a impromptu lesson for a couple of runs and finally, my kid decide he'll ski. So all of a sudden he gets his act together. We do a couple magic carpet runs then head over and do a couple runs on the novice chair lift. He's doing great. My niece is doing okay. She skiing mostly on her own on the green. We take a break for hot cocoa. Then my wife take my niece back to the carpet area while I take my son up the intermediate lift. Me and my son bang a quick one on Ralph's (easy blue). My kids grinning ear-to-ear and whooping tarzan yells as he heads down the trai.

lSo, what started out like it was going to be a disaster day turned into a very successful outing. My kids back up to blues and my niece is up to greens.

back to wa friday 12/15

well my wife said don't go, won't be any good, most ski areas in the east have shut down again....the temps had been +45 deg for a few days......but no 2 son wanted to get a few turns in b4 the family trek north after the holidays so off we went to wachusett mountain this am rolling out of the drive about 630 am.....

Well wa wasn't good today.....it was great !!!! First chair up about 8:45(not that it mattered, nobody and I mean nobody there) Much better than Sunday about 38 deg at the top, nice buttery spring like groomed to perfection conditions.....and another glorious, epic day on the worlds most famous Volkl Allstars(well at least on the internet) Most runs down Conifer we were the only customers on the trail so I often was able to really open those puppies up. My turns are all dialed in for that trek north, only hoping weather turns cold so some nice steep stuff is avail end of the month! All my kids have a day on the hill....and I gots 2!!!! If it doesn't get cold for snowmaking, I think they are done tho....there is a limit to even the crowley ability to perform miracles.....

Yet another epic day for the memory banks, pllus I got some quality hang time with #2 son.....

which is really what it is all about......

Sunday morning 12/17

I am planning on going to the wa tomorrow morning, Sunday.

I'd be on the lift by 8 and out of there by 10:30-11:00.

Anyone want to join me?

SMJ,

Ice Queen and I had tenatively been planning to go up Sunday but the weather the last few days doesn't make us to eager to make the drive. We both also have quite a few errands, Christmas shopping, etc. So I think we'll take a flyer this week. Hopefully things will look more promising by next weekend.

Skied at Berkshire East today, thin cover, lost a lot of snow - but still a lot of fun. Spring skiing, got kind of bumped up. Challenging, but I handled it well which was a confidence booster. Definitely worth skiing at the wa tomorrow if it's at least as good (and of course most likely better) then the Beast was.

Wachusett Conditions and get togethers 2007

Skied the wa this morning from 8-10am. Tons of fun. Conifer over and over, good coverage edge to edge of trail, great grooming for the first hour, then it got soft slowly and a little clumped up, but not too bad. Race teams also clinicing on the trail, but it was ok. I love that style of skiing.

Facing the mountain the leftmost trail is an incredible beginner slope. Long, wide, consistent pitch (and very little of it.)

I might be there Christmas day in the morning, but not the night before.

Trying to get there this Friday the 22nd in the morning. Ice Queen can you join me? (I know your hubby has to work. )

A little night skiiing?

Hey fellow Wa-Wa Bears!

I'm *finally* going to get my season underway starting this Tuesday night (yeah, days are better ... but there's only so many sick days I can take )

I've been doing a regular night gig for the past few years with some work friends and it makes for some regular skiing (and maybe a beer or 2 at the end of the night). This year Wed and Thurs are going to be tough (family stuff), so Tuesday it is!

I'm still up for some days on the hill, but it can be fun under the lights as well.

PM me if you would like to come out and play some night ...

SMJ, I might be able to go Friday morning. Thing is, if I wake RISkier up at 5:00 because I'm going skiing and he's going to work, there will be hell to pay. Sooo, I might wait til 6:00 to get up and be there around 9:00. But all of that depends on how much Xmas stuff I still haven't done....I'll pm you.

Old Eastern, Tuesday night is my family stuff night. Maybe RISkier and I can join you for a night or two under the lights anyway.

Tuesday Night Update

Good news, bad news at Wachusett tonight ...

1st the good news: I f-i-n-a-l-l-y got out and went skiing

The guns have been running since last night and they re-opened Challenger off the mid-mountain lift. Conditions were a bit chunky, but tolerable. Guns are going full blast on Look Mom, Challenger and Ralph's Run so look to see more terrain opening soon.

I ran a few laps on Challenger trying to dial in my new boots (more good news: my new new boots are working a LOT better than my old new boots). After the legs warmed up went off the top to run a few on Conifer.

Conditions on Conifer were surprisingly good . Guns were on at the top, off on the lower section but I was finding amazing stashes of manmade on the right side of the trail on the way down. A little scratchy and a little thin in spots, but no crowds, plenty of room ... what's not to like .

Decided to pack it in around 9:00 and that's when I got the bad news ...

Someone ripped off my boot bag!!:

As I've been doing for the past 3 years, I pop my boot bag on top of the lockers. I don't keep anything of value in the bag, so I'm not too fussy about locking it up. Came back to dump my boots and ... no bag!!

Filed a report with customer service. They were really great about it ... even found the security camera shot of the scumbag walking off with the bag. So I'm out 1 bag, 1 mask, 1 hat and my favorite pair of Merrell trail shoes.

Apparently I'm not the first this season ... this has been going on for a couple of weeks. I'm going to strongly recommend bringing a few quarters and locking your stuff up ... even if you don't have anything of value in the bag.

Although I was pissed about the bag, I didn't let it dampen the feeling of being back on skis again! Lookin' forward to more skiing (and hopefully some snow one of these days : )

OldEasternSkier,

Good to hear they've got the guns going again. Sucks about your boot bag. As a bit of a PSA, the one day we were up we noticed they have implemented supervised ski storage (not sure what the correct term would be). It's on the left side of the lodge (skiers left looking from the mountain toward the parking lot).

12/22 Friday.

Incredible conditions. Perfect groomed snow becoming small piles of soft man made. Left at 11am. Not crowded, but plenty of us old timers on the hill. (Most of them uphill of me though.)

Carving really round turns on Coniffer for 2 hours is as much fun to me as anything else in the world!

Rain tomorrow. Carpe Diem - that's what old SMJ did this morning! Seized the Day!

Wachusett TUesday 2 Jan

Sorry for the late posting. Just joined at the recommendation of hrstrat57.

So, this report is 2 days old and with this weather, and Wa's start of the school programs this week, all info could be moot.

Regardless...I went Tuesday AM to meet up with a pal I had promised to ski with. I almost called to pull the plug figuring the previous day's rain would have turned it all to corn or blue ice.

I could not have been more wrong!

Apparenttly Wa had groomed the previous evening while the snow was still wet. It froze overnight and that corduroy was fabulous! Even after the corduroy got scraped off, the surface remained totally edgeable.

We made 15 to 20 runs, mostly on Conifer (the only trail open off the summit). No speed limit, no crowd (not even the older folks who usually ski there every morning). There was a sign at the top about thin cover and narrow trails...but I saw no evidence of either. Edge to edge hard-carveable. No sand-on-plywood!

Additionally...I expected to find gray or blue ice after all that rain...NONE! SO the first runs were cautious as we hunted for lousy / dangerous conditions. The rest were mach schnel. I guess there was one spot that was thin and narrow come to think...just as the trail dumps you out on the merge with Smith at the very bottom. *big deal*

We checked Ralph's Run in case we opted to bring family members up later in the week. Not quite edge to edge, but surface conditions were the same as Conifer...or better, especially where it starts the final descent to the lift (where most learners need the better conditions to maintain confidence).

Wa was grooming Challenger, so we never gave it a ride.

Look Mom was also open...and NOT dedicated to the park yet. Again, same surface conditions as Conifer and not edge to edge. I'ts been ages since I've been on that trail. I forgot how much variability (fun) there is on that trail...and I can see why Wa puts the park there...drops and plateaus the entire length.

Anyway...that's what I saw and skied for about 4 hours. Race League tonight. Only one lane due to the lack of edge to edge....and only one run per racer. :< I'm leaving the Supersports in their sheath and sticking with the Dynastar Contact 11's.

Lastly...hrstrat57 says there's an event on 12 Jan (next Friday). I anticipate being there to meet a few new ski pals.

Nice to see so many Wachusett skiers. I am working my first season as a Ranger there, so if you are skiing on Tuesday or Thursday nights after 7PM, say hello. I am the not-so-tall Ranger on tele skis.

Aren't you a little young to build a time machine?

Why yes, yes we are.

I had a really good time Christmas Eve. You have a really nice ski hill there. Very scenic. I ran into a telemark instructor that I had skied with before. His name is Massimo and he is a really good skier and a fun character. You should try to ski with him, you will have a lot of fun and probably learn a lot, too!

Anyone who wants to learn telemark, this guy is a strong level III. Most ski areas don't have a telemark instructor with his skills. A great resource if you should care to take advantage of his presence there.

I spent most of the day on the beginner chair. My niece and I had a blast. She took a lesson, she's turning both ways, still falling a lot, but she doesn't care. She just laughs, gets up and tries again.
