Man without a mountain

Outrageous. Sacked for being too good and paid "too much"?!
The US ski industry is a good example of the free market.... for people who don't believe it works and need an example!

The US, IMO, has some of the best ski instructors in the world. But most of them aren't teaching, as they can't afford to. They're out being paid huge salaries in non-ski-related jobs. The free market. Quality is just a word.

I hope you take up one of the offers here to go to another hill... I guess your clientele would be happy if you went to one close by!

Stache,

Sorry to see you go. The new owners are flexing their muscles I guess. Hope you can get hooked up with a different mountain for this season. Hunter is not a bad place to teach during the week and only 8 more miles for you to drive. I ski there some during the week, so let me know how you make out. Charlie K. is the SSD there.

Good luck!

There's quite an awesome community up at Hunter among the hard core despite it's rep, and during the week, Hunter is a different mountain. If you come to Hunter, maybe you can teach me to ski, some of the best have tried....

Ron White,
The decision was strictly FK's it did NOTcome down from the thrid deck.
Thank you for your mentoring and excellent example of what a great all around ski instructor, and father of a ski instructor, should be. I'll see you on snow at the next region 6 tech day, as long as they don't hold it at Windham. I will never ski there again as long as FK is in any management or supervisory position.

I know Charlie pretty well. He's a good guy, you just don't wanna piss him off, else he'll just make you feel real stupid somehow (he always manages to with me).

The paperwork is in, the locker assigned, and the deal is done ('cept I still need to put down a $100 deposit to get my jacket).

I almost went the weekend warrior route with a "second room" at Killington or some other major mountain, but my daughter's age and the logistics are still too much of a challenge. Maybe in three or four more years.

Sooo, amongst the areas within an hour or less each way commute the winner is....

Jiminy Peak, MA

(yes skiprob I listed you as referrer on my application).

Amazingly on the car's odometer it was 39.5 miles to Windham and it is 39.7 miles to Jiminy.

mods/admin you may list me accordingly and link to www.JiminyPeak.com

Every area has it's own pluses and minuses.
I already miss some things the Windham Snowsports school did that Jiminy doesn't. But, I am also very excited about a more sincere effort to get instructors certified and "pinned" by PSIA rather than developing their own in house pin system.

I guess. But one of the pluses at JP is I just purchased a "value card" there! So I'll have a chance to look you up and say hello one day this winter.

Stache I have no clue what your are going through. I can see where ski area management or any business would have a problem with employees giving their own product reviews on their own web site. I am no lawyer but this is could be considered a conflict of interest. Now if you are a ski instructor at another mountain and publish a Thursday Night Snow Condition Report or Windham, there should be no problem. I am sure your heart was in the right place when you started this. May be a good time to sit back, reflect, and figure out what you value most in life.

Not Stein. Remember, Stein was not Mobius. That was, I think Tom LeRoy or one of those guys.

Thanks nyskier,
The coup is also for Jiminy hiring a man with a following.
At least one for sure, and probably two families have already changed their vacation plans from Windham to Jiminy Peak.
I still haven't broadcast my change of mountains yet. Those two families initiated the contact with me to make sure I was going to be there before they booked. I will probably disappoint some others who were making the same assumtion that I was making in September before I got "that email".

One thing I have noticed is that Jiminy Peak really seems to be giving much more than lip service to customer satisfaction and to mountain safety. Two areas where Windham talked the talk but did not walk the walk.
Jiminy was recently rated #8 in the nation for families.
They sadly lost (fatality) one of their best snowboarders between a competition and the podium ceremony last season. : So they are really doing some proactive things to keep reckless sliding to a minimum.

My Mom always preached that God works in mysterious ways and we never know at the time why some "bad" things happen to us, but in the end his plans are for our own good. I think this change will definitely be for the good.

Glad you hooked up, Stache. I was on pins and needles in a similar situation this season when my supervisor was informed by his bosses that my whiskers had to go. I'd told them if my whiskers went, I went with them. They decided just today that my medical justification for whiskers was adequate reason not to force me out.
