Drinking Hale's Ales tonight (Seattle micro). It was this week's special at the Metropolitan Market. Started out with a 'Moss Bay Extra'. Now I'm sipping their 'Mongoose IPA' (not bad but could be a tad hoppier. I prefer Pyramid IPA). And I'll finish off with a 'Wee Bit Heavy Winter Ale'.

Makers and Troegg

I've just finished drinkin' my share of Maker's Mark Bourbon, and now I'm on to Troegg's Pilsner (seriously, it's a hoppy, decent pilsner brewed in the US. Didn't believe it myself 'till I tried it.

Blue high official select Oolong Ginseng tea. I purchased this in a tea shop in Beijing during January.

Does this make me a teetotaler?

Meia Encosta

I did mixed tornadoes of boeuf and porc with sauce bernaise, creamed spinach, haricots verts, and brussels sprouts last night paired with a really interesting Meia Encosta from Borges in the Dao region of Portugal for dinner.

The wine was a real bargain at under $ 10 a bottle, it reminded me of a Cotes du Rhone for a whole lot less $$$.

We had the 2001, here are some tasting notes on the 1999:

Gently herby fruit on the nose with a smoky, minerally edge. Midweight palate is clean and quite fruity with good acidity and a touch of minerality. Solid wine reflecting its origins. very good/excellent

....and on the tail end of the day...

Coffee!..;-),
After a couple Shipyard Winter Ales...following an enjoyable afternoon spent at a small local mountain(Hermon). Today was a tossup between a truely brisk;-) two hours at Sugarloaf or four...granted, on significantly lesser pitch...but equally good snow, spent on my Fischer RX6s....and watching 4-7yo gate bashers;-) from the chairlift. Have to tell ya', the Loaf took 2nd place today.

Speaking of things we should be drinking right now, I'm sure it's nothing a few caipirinhas wouldn't cure...

Michelob Bavarian Style Wheat. Surprisingly tasty. Very similar taste to the Weizens I loved when living in Bayern but not nearly as carbonated. You cannot drink a German Weizen out of the bottle.

It's nice to live within a mile of a Budweiser brewery...we get a lot of test market stuff and there's lots of friends of friends that work there and have some really wild stuff to try. It's amazing that the best stuff that A-B makes never gets distributed or marketed. They have the ability to make really good beer but can't seem to make it sell to the GAP (Great American Public).

Hussong's Reposado

After reading the Tequila thread I just had to go pour myself a shot of Hussong's reposdado:

I am enjoying this with sea salt and wedges of blood orange, since I unfortunately found myself limeless this evening.

If you like Tequila you must try.

Kitchen being renovated, all cupboards emptied out, taken down. Wall nearby at mercy of the sledgehammer. All is dry and dusty. Found...a bottle of rum with a few swallows left. Havana Club aged Rum bought in Cuba, 3 years ago. Having a little right now. Don't usually like the hard stuff, but yuummm.

El Coto Rioja Crianza 2003

Last night for dinner we had a green salad with sherry vinagrette, loin lamb chops, a gratin of potatoes, and haricot verts with a very nice little El Coto, one of my favorite Riojas:

Tasting notes:

El Coto Rioja is a more traditional, elegant red wine. Because of its high altitude, Rioja is one of Spain’s coolest wine regions. Tempranillo, a varietal that has had little success in other countries, shines here with its interplay between delicate berry fruit and spicier, more leathery flavor components. When made traditionally with extensive oak aging, it is rounded in texture with soft tannins, versatility, and appealingly ripe but not heavily extracted fruit. Many Rioja producers blend other grapes with Tempranillo, but El Coto Rioja Crianza is 100% Tempranillo.

The Wine Enthusiast rated the 2001 El Coto Crianza a “Best Buy - An easy and simple display of Rioja in fresh form,” it won the 2004 Critic’s Challenge International Wine Challenge “Critic’s Award,” and the Wine Spectator called it “a silky red, light but graceful, with focused flavors of cherry, spice, and vanilla flavors. In the traditional style, but fresh and clean.”

Sipping an Oban, finsihed a bottle of David Bruce pinot Noir at dinner. Delicious.

I've always liked the Tempranillo grape, so will try to find the above bottle.
