This past week I was excepted into the recruit class for the Cayuga Heights Fire Department. I would like to eventually Patrol as well as Instruct.

Is anyone here a volunteer firefighter? What words of wisdom, helpful hints or thing to watch out for can you give this rookie?

Thanks
John

Yea definitely. I'm a volie in NJ. The best advice is to lay low, don't step on anyone's toes, don't be too eager to please everyone and absorb as much training as you can early. Once you become a "veteran" old timer you lose your flexibilty, both mentally and physically .

Most old timer's I know are stuck in their ways and don't want to change. And they especially don't want a new probie showing them up or going against the grain as they say.

The most popular and best ff's I know started by following the older generation and learning from them, as well as absorbing the new ideas and training based on the most current models. Then once they get put into a position of authority, i.e. line officer, they start implementing those changes that they have learned. By that time that person is one of the "old timer's" and they get the respect from the younger guys.

hope this helps a little,
matt

Tief - FWIW the overwhelming majority of our patrollers are firefighters (pros, in our case). It seems to be a synergy that works extremely well.

I'm a career FF'er here in Utah and I patrol on my days off.

The big thing is to just be a new guy. I'm not sure how things work in volunteer depts., but here are a few things for our probies:

-don't watch tv with the crew, you've got better things to do like, study the first in area, polish chrome on the engine, clean the station, etc.

-Be the last one to eat and the first one up to do dishes.

-When the phone rings, run, it better not ring more than twice before you answer it. Yes, even if you are in the shower.

-Don't ever bitch about a call interrupting something you were doing, these guys have been waking up in the night for years.

-Don't ever tell one of the firefighters that you know how to do something when they are showing you. You don't know anything rookie.

The guys will let you know when your time doing these things are up, it happens when you've earned their respect. Do it right, these are your brothers and your life depends on them and vice versa. Have fun being a rookie, everything is exciting right now!

I thought exactly that as I was writing it. It's surprising how alike the two groups are.

Cayuga Heights? As in Cayuga Heights, NY???? I grew up at 301 Highgate Rd., went to Cayuga Heights Elementary School from 1959 to 1966. I was a member/captain of McLean Fire-Rescue from 1981 to '88, then we moved to MN. I'm a state park ranger out here, wildfire qualified, Wilderness EMT. But I grew up in Cayuga Heights!

That would be the one.

I had my son on the playground of the elementary school just today. Small world.

Almost the entire paid ranks at our hill are pro FF's/EMT's. Plus, a good portion of the volunteers are EMT's/Medico's.

Why?

Because they dig "being there first and making a difference"...goes true in patrol as it does in FF/1st Responders.

Top flight and classy group from top-to-bottom. Who else would be willing to spend 4 hours every Wednesday night, plus gobs more time trying to get a goofy company owner to understand DCAP-BTLS?

As for the "newbie" tag...correct again. Show respect, seek first to understand and then be understood and everything will work out ok.
