The tequila thread got me salivating. So, what are your favorite Margarita recipes? Here's my favorite "summer" margarita recipe. I go more traditional in the other seasons. It's hard to beat this on a hot day/night.

1. Fill blender almost to top with ice.
2. Add 3/4 cup tequila (Sauza Hornitos is my preference).
3. Add 1/4 cup Grand Marnier. (May be able to substitute triple sec/cointreau, etc. Personally, I think its better with GM, but you could probably use orange juice and it would still be good)
4. Add 3/4 cup sprite (must be sprite, no 7-up, fresca, etc.)
5. Add 6 oz. of frozen limeade.
6. Blend.
7. Drink. (I think the salted rim helps a lot).
8. Repeat steps 1-7.

The sprite actually does not make it sweeter. Instead, it gives the drink a kind of frothy consistency somewhere between a margarita on the rocks and a typical frozen margarita.

I’m not much of a "measurer", but I do manage to enjoy my adult beverages nevertheless. So forgive me if the ratios are a little vague; I usually end up departing from this recipe in some way or another:

1/2 C. Tequila
1/8 c. Grand Marnier
1/4 c. Triple Sec
1 C. Water
3 Tbs Sugar, more or less.
1/8 – 1/4 C. key lime juice
Grated zest of one key lime (ok, a regular lime works too, but the key lime is best)

The beauty of this is the key lime juice and the zest. Mix all the ingredients together in a pitcher, throw in the zest too, and let it sit overnight in the fridge. This recipe makes a couple drinks. Or one. Depending.
Delish.

Shouldn't step 8 be 'Repeat steps 1-7 until you can no longer repeat steps 1-7.'?

My stopping point is usually when I cut my tongue on the blender blades.

Here's one that's very dangerous. It has, on many occasions, resulted in the very sneaky inebriation of people who normally never drink too much. It's so smooth and yummy that it's very easy to drink too many.

The recipe was given to us by a group of Minnesota nurses who used to come stay and ski with us for a week every winter. They claimed the recipe was a group effort that had taken years of trial and error (the errant typically ended up under the table). It's also very easy to make:

1 6oz. can of frozen lemonade
1 6oz. can of frozen limeade
Use the empty lemon or limeade can to measure:
6oz. of tequila
3oz. of triple sec
1 egg WHITE (and it's absolutely critical you add this ingredient)

Dump it all in the blender, fill with ice, and pulverize.

We also learned through desperation late one night that you can substitute vodka for the tequila and end up with a very smooth, very drinkable alternative. :

Here's a quickie/short Margarita from a buddy in Delray Beach:

pour one shot of high quality tequila over rocks,
add half a shot of Grand Marnier,
add a good splash of Rosie's Lime Juice.

...this drink does the trick!

1 part tequila (preferably 100% agave)
1 part Cointreu (or triple sec or grand gala in a pinch)
1 part fresh squeezed lime juice

Shake with ice, pour, drink.

Easy to remember, easy to mix, easy to drink.

bbinder is on the right track. I'm a marg snob. The best margaritas ( in my opinion ) are made with high quality silver tequila. Heradura Silver is fine and won't break the bank. Fresh lime juice is key. Grand Marnier is not good for margaritas-it's like drinking congac and coke. Classless! The brandy-like flavors of Grand Marnier do not complement the bright flavor you should be looking for in a good margarita. Cointreau is great but triple sec is just fine so long as you get GOOD triple sec. Marie Brizzard is my choice.

The sugar or sweetness in the beverage is important. Shoot for balance between sweet and the tartness of the lime. The sweetness comes from the triple sec, but sometimes the orange is too overpowering so use a little less triple sec and scosh of simple syrup.

2 oz Silver Tequila
1 oz Good Quality Triple Sec
1 oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
1/2 oz Simple Syrup

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a salted cocktail glass.

Sip and enjoy with some chile roasted peanuts and gaucamole with chips.

The Royal Rita

Interesting twist to a margarita: Substitute Canadian Whiskey for the Tequila... Aka The Royal Rita (Crown Royal inspired).

I have found the less expensive Canadian brands are just as good when mixing and use either CC or the R & R brand, splash of Grand Marinier/Cointreu, your favorite recipe Margarita mix and a splash of OJ. Pour in ice filled and salt rimmed glass, garnish with small orange slice. Enjoy in moderation

Hey I tried the Triple Sec recipe/lime and puked. The acidity killed me!

Bump up the amounts of triple sec and simple syrup a little to sweeten it up! I honestly don't measure - just have an inate sense of how much of each. Mess around with it until you find the balance of sweet and tart. Also, the salt on the rim of the glass is important. If you skip the salted rim then you'll need to make the beverage a bit sweeter.

I hate salted marg glasses! I had a decent marg Sat night at a new (small chain) high-end burger restaraunt Saturday night. They salted the glass pretty heavily (my fault, I forgot to ask for no salt), then filled it to the rim. So all the salt on the inside of the glass sank to the bottom, and by the time I got 3/4 of the way through the drink, I felt like I was drinking sea water! Yuk! but the top half was tasty. And should have been for $8!: . This one was made with 1800, triple sec & cointreu (I think they used a mix of the two?), and fresh lime.

1 jigger good vodka
1 jigger orange liquor
1 or 2 teaspoons super fine bakers sugar

If you EVER get a marg salted on the inside of the glass SEND IT BACK!! The proper way to salt the glass is to wipe the outside of the glass with cut citrus (lime generally) then salt. No salt will stick to the dry inside of the glass. If they can't figure that out offer to show them how it's done but never accept the drink.

When I was a poor grad student, to make a little money on the side, we'd sell "Upsidedown" margaritas. 1 buck a shot. Our best night we made around $100 or so....

To do this correctly, you need a reclining type lawn chair, but a couch or chair with a low back will work. You also need at least two helpers. The "victim" lies back with the head tilted back with their mouth open. The helper(s) pours in the (chilled) margarita mixer, then a shot of triple sec, then the tequila. The victim then stands up quickly and shakes (their head) vigorously.

I THINK I did about 17 of these one night at a halloween party. Apparently, there a pictures of me (semi) naked and inverted just before I splashed down in the hot tub (which was apparently quite full of people at the time....) Hummm, maybe that's how they got their name...

Away back in my college days there was a bar we's hit now and then which had a barber chair for doing upside down margaritas. They'd recline you way back and two large breasted bar maids would pour the booze into your mouth. Then, they'd hit the lever on the chair and send you bolt upright. Glorp!

Ahh, those were the days....

Had we been big breasted women, we might have made more money...

Too much waisted time.

Keep your tequila in the freezer.

1. Fill a heavy shot glass 3/4 full of tequila
2. Top with Squirt
3. Place your hand over the top, slam the glass on a solid wood board, & Bottoms up!

Here is the one I make for my gf - I hate tequila, but apparently it is really good... (single drink)

1 1/2 Cup of crushed/shaved ice (vary depending on how big you want the thing)
2oz of Tequila (not specific on kind but the silver stuff seems to do a good job)
1 oz Triple Sec
.5 oz Grand Marnier (Cointreau or Grand Gala can substitute)
1.5 oz lemonade (use lemon juice if you like them TART/VERY SOUR)
1 oz lime juice

Rim the glass with sugar/salt mix...
I Ski.

1 snifter with 2 shots of Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia. ($120.00 a bottle) Lime on the side

Swirl before sipping and sniff the aroma, savor a sip at a time, suck on the lime, leave out the mixer!

Delicious!

Cassadores is good, but my everyday choice is Sauza Hornitos!

I have to agree completely with the simplicity advocates

In a highball glass muddle a quartered lime in half a tablespoon raw sugar

Fill glass with ice cubes

Fill remainder with 3 parts tequila and 1 part orange liquier

Shake

Obviously, the better the booze, the better the drink. Patron and Grand Marnier is excellent. Pepe and Triple Sec is still surprisingly drinkable.
